## Nanstallon Pre-School Chairperson’s Report September 2019 - August 2020

Nanstallon Pre-School is situated at the heart of the community, we work in partnership with parents and community groups to provide high quality care in the very best facilities, in a small village setting.

We are fortunate to have a purpose built, eco-building offering a bright and spacious area in which we aim to give each child the best start in life by laying solid foundations for future learning, where children can explore the world around them, establish friendships, develop imagination, share, co-operate with others, gain confidence to initiate and try out new ideas, seek new challenges, make new discoveries; and most of all have great fun and develop a love of learning.

We are registered with OFSTED and were thrilled to receive a ‘Good’ outcome at our inspection in June 2017. We provide sessional day care, welcoming children the intake after they are two years and three months to five years. We have qualified, experienced, friendly staff who provide a fun, caring environment for the children to learn through play and adult led activities. Our Pre-School Manager, Vicky Lafford, has Early Years Teacher Status.

This has been an exceptionally difficult and challenging year.

It started out so well, we were as busy as usual with the children, whilst working hard updating and growing the business, then, the week after we had celebrated our 10year anniversary, everything in our lovely building stopped.

However, although we weren’t in Pre-School during April and May, the staff continued to work hard, supporting families both online and with gifts through the post. The staff kept in contact via Zoom, bouncing ideas about how to support the families and supporting each other.

We were also supported by the Cornwall Council Early Years team, who hosted Zoom meetings for Cornish settings, giving advice, answering funding questions and passing on the Government guidance.

They have been a great support to the Cornish Early Years sector, both in their advice but also with passing on as much of their emergency funds as possible.

Ordinarily, we fundraise throughout the year, however, due to the pandemic, we have had less opportunities to stage larger events.

Fortunately, in February 2020 we enjoyed a joint ‘English Spirit talk and taste’ fundraising evening with the proceeds being divided between Pre-School and Nanstallon School.

Also, we are extremely fortunate for the donations we receive from parents, these funds continue to allow us to maintain our lovely building, purchase new play equipment and to continue improving our garden area.

Despite the challenges facing us during these unprecedented times, Nanstallon PreSchool continues to be a thriving charity, which is supported by the local community and many local families, both from the village and surrounding areas. The majority of our children feed into Nanstallon Primary School, in whose grounds the Pre-School sits, thus allowing the transition from Pre-School to Primary to be as smooth as possible.

We pride ourselves on our small village feel and, despite the current challenges, on

## **2. Depreciation**

Please note that no charge for depreciation of equipment has been included this year. It is not an actual expense of the pre-school and was a provision to reflect the effective reduction in the value of equipment. As all new equipment is written off in the Income and Expenditure Account when it is incurred, the written down value of the equipment detailed on the Balance Sheet of £4,023 is carried forward to represent the value of all equipment held by the pre-school at 31 August 2020.
