Governance

All decisions that are either material to the group or relate to any form of financial approval are approved via the Trustee Board that is formed by the above Trustees.

The Trustee Board meets every two months (or more regularly as required for key decisions) and has a standing agenda that includes Financial Statement from the Treasurer, and update on group sections from the Group Scout Leader / Lead Volunteer.

(Aligned with the Trustee Board is the Operations Board which meets before the Trustee Board, with any actions or requests flowing to the Trustee Board for consideration. Members of the Operations Board include all uniformed leaders who are no longer members of the Trustee Board)

All meetings have a formal agenda with Actions and Decisions, along with key discussion points documented. This includes all voting decisions.

The Group executes activities as defined in the Scout Association Policy Organisation and Rules (POR) as available on the Scout Association website and updated as required.

Trustee training is available from the Scout Association.

Chair’s Update

Another great year with well over 110 young people across ages 4 to 18 involved with the Group, along with our adult volunteers that do such an amazing job of making the activities and camps happen.

It’s also seen some fantastic camps that our leaders give up their weekends to run – having attended two, I can see how much effort is put in.

In terms of site maintenance, we have improved the building with new corridor protection, and are planning to grade and remove the old playground area this summer,

We continue to need volunteers who can help keep the group going. We are looking for everything from helping with cutting the grass once a month, to members of our Trustee Board. If you can help, then please let me know.

Andrew Prescott, Chair

Group Scout Leader’s Update

We’ve had a busy year with all five sections providing a brilliant variety of activities - All sections are well subscribed which is a good indicator of the group’s success.

In the summer we celebrated the group’s 80[th] Birthday!!

We had a big party in the grounds with about 100 people attending. We had the district scout band attend and play for us which was great and quite moving too.

Our Squirrels leader Sarah Brown and her mum made an amazing cake with marzipan figures representing all the scout sections on it sat around a camp fire – it was really impressive. The cake was all eaten up in no time but I’ve kept the figures safe & sound.

We had people attending from our past & present and it was a really lovely afternoon with a barbeque to keep us all fed.

The Squirrels section is thriving and I’m always amazed at the different activities the leaders arrange for them.

The beavers had a joint Beavers and Cub camp a few weeks ago at Lyons Copse and have just attended a fun district beaver day at Lyons Copse.

The cubs are doing well, winning the district football competition last summer and then the camping competition in September too!

The scouts have been on a joint cub & scout camp at Denmead and are off to Lyons Copse in a couple of weeks then to Brownsea Island in September.

The Explorers have been busy too with ever new activities arranged for them. This week the explorers ran an incident hike for the scouts and it was a major success! This week they were learning all about car maintenance, a valuable life skill for sure.

I’d like to finish this report by thanking the Young People for their enthusiasm, it makes it all worthwhile.

Thank you to all the Parents / Guardians for your support and a massive thank you to the leadership team as without you all there would be no 1[st] Catisfield Scout Group.

Lesley Bruton, Group Scout Leader
