Governance
All decisions that are either material to the group or relate to any form of financial approval are approved via the Trustee Board that is formed by the above Trustees.
The Trustee Board meets every two months (or more regularly as required for key decisions) and has a standing agenda that includes Financial Statement from the Treasurer, and update on group sections from the Group Scout Leader.
All meetings have a formal agenda with Actions and Decisions, along with key discussion points documented. This includes all voting decisions.
The Group executes activities as defined in the Scout Association Policy Organisation and Rules (POR) as available on the Scout Association website and updated as required.

Chair’s Update
This year has thankfully seen a return to a more normal scouting activities after a number of yours of covid disruption. It’s great to see the group continue to be successful, with over 100 young people in our sections from Blackbrook Squirrels, right through to Merlin Explorers. This year has also
seen a number of new adult helpers and leaders join us, which is so vital if we want to continue to offer an exciting programme of activities.
This year sees a change in name for the Executive Committee, with it now being referred to as Trustee Board. This is really more representative of what this group does, and directly refers to the role the Board has as Charity Trustees for the group. We have a couple of vacancies for parent representatives, so if you can give an hour every couple of months to support us then please let me know.
The group has also continue to be successful in other income sources – particularly with the rental of the HQ which is now well used throughout the week by various other groups. This really helps financially as we look to continue to develop the programme and facilities.
Finally, I would like to offer my thanks to Lesley, the section leaders, and all of our leaders and helpers that make the group the success it has been over the last 12 months.
Andrew Prescott, Chair
Group Scout Leader’s Update
We’ve had a busy busy time with all five sections providing a brilliant variety of activities over the past year. All sections are well subscribed which is a good indicator of the group’s success.
Hopefully most of you will have seen our splendid new fire-circle which was completed over the summer holidays. It will be great to have a purpose built area where we can have camp-fires and practice fire-lighting and backwoods cooking. The Scouts christened it this Wednesday night with a fire and the obligatory marshmallows and toasted bread.
After a few years break we all went off to Braggers Wood camp-site in the New Forest in May for our 1[st] Catisfield Group Camp.
The Squirrels had a day visit, the Beavers stayed for a night and the Cubs, Scouts & Explorers all stayed two nights. It’s a beautiful site right in the forest and we did a lovely hike plus archery, axe throwing, rifle shooting, cook-out on open fire, pizza making plus a big group camp-fire.
Our Squirrels Drey is doing really well and had their 1[st] Birthday earlier in the year. They attended a Squirrels Fun day at Fernycrofts activity centre in the New Forest last September. The number of activities laid on was very impressive, like archery, climbing, bouncy castles, crafts and backwoods cooking. Lots of our Squirrels are booked on to go again this autumn.
There has been a change of leadership with Jess Sansom stepping down and Danielle Wheatley & Sarah Brown taking on the leadership between them. They need another couple of leaders to join them on Monday evenings from 5-6pm so if anyone fancied helping out even on an occasional basis please let us know.
The Beavers have been busy too. They had an easter sleepover at the scout hut earlier this year and had an egg hunt, easter craft activities, a camp-fire and fish & chips for dinner. There’s another one arranged for Halloween this winter and our leader ‘River’ will be gaining her Night Away permit. They have also been out and about doing climbing and archery at Lyons Copse.
The Beavers are off on a District Fun Day at Lyons Copse in a couple of weeks with lots of them signed up for the day’s activities.
The Cubs have been very busy with lots of camps and competitions. They competed in the District Camping competition in September and took first and second place! Good luck to them in this year’s competition in a couple of weeks. They also took part in the District Football competition in June and won, both our teams did really well.
In April we took them to London to stay aboard the HMS Belfast and see the sights, it was a weekend to remember.
The District Cub camp was held at Lyons Copse in July and we welcomed about 170 Cubs from all our neighbouring groups. We have 9 Cubs in the process of moving up to Scouts and wish them well.
The Scouts have had a great year and are thriving under the leadership team with lots of activities arranged. They are off to Fernycrofts in October on a ‘Fright Night’ last time they went the Scouts loved it. They have been climbing, done archery, lots of hikes, backwoods cooking and hikes.
In June some of the Scouts had the opportunity to go to Wales. They camped at a Scout ground in the Brecon Beacons and did lots of walking and exploring.
Sabine gained her Nights Away permit on the Wales trip – congratulations.
They are arranging another camp for later this year.
The Explorers have been away camping lots, a firm favourite and are off again in a couple of weeks – sleeping in hammocks at Everetts Copse. They took part in the County Kudo night hike earlier this year and their team took first place in their category – excellent.
We also had a team of Explorers take part in their DofE expedition in the New Forest and they did a great job showing very impressive map reading skills and teamwork.
I’d like to finish this report by thanking the Young People for their enthusiasm, it makes it all worthwhile. Thank you to all the Parents / Guardians for your support and a massive thank you to the leadership team as without you all there would be no 1[st] Cat Scout Group.
Lesley Bruton, Group Scout Leader
