Bantham Surf Life Saving Club

Trustees Annual Report for the period From 1/10/2023 to 30/9/2024

Charity Name: Bantham Surf Life Saving Club

Charity Registration Number: 1036210

Objects and Activities:

Summary of main activities:

Education/training

The advancement of Health or Saving Lives

Amateur Sport

The trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

We aim our direct training at Children, Young People and Adults who are registered as members, we provide premises for social members to congregate, usually the parents and siblings of our younger members.

We provide information to parents of our younger members and encourage them to join us as members, we provide information and support to general public on the safe use of the

beaches, we support the cleaning of the beach environment and water quality.

Structure, governance and management

Our charity is governed by our constitution last amended on the 8[th] December 2000.

All Trustees (committee members) are elected at the Annual General Meeting by members of Bantham Surf Life Saving Club.

Achievements and performance

We successfully operated a Surf Life Saving Club made up of Senior, Youth and Nipper memberships. Our youngest members are 7 years old and our Youth section continues until the age of 18 as at the 1[st] January of the membership year. Social Membership provided for parents and siblings who wished to be connected with us but not directly involved in the training was introduced this year and has been well received. This year our membership grew to 305 members up from 245 last year.

We created and delivered training sessions for Nippers, Youth and young lifeguard trainee crew from May until December on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. This year we have introduced adhoc sessions which have been running either on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening for adult members wishing to upskill either in the water or on land. This is planned to be built on next year when we aim to offer more of these sessions.

We also provided pool sessions January to April. We added an extra two sessions this year to cater specifically for our Adult members. These sessions were held at the Quayside Leisure Centre in Kingsbridge and were attended by over 80 Youth and Nippers and over 30 Seniors.

Over the year we have trained members for the following awards; Surf Lifeguard, Surf Lifesaver, Rescue Board and Rescue Tube awards.

Our coaches are trained to Coach Level 1 and Coach Level 2 as well as Safeguarding training. Our club safeguarding officers have been busy ensuring all those working alongside our Youth and Nipper members have been DBS checked and safeguarding trained.

We opened our training room doors to a local congregation in order they can deliver their Sea Service once a year and have a safe warm space to return to and enjoy a cup of tea.

Our members took part in the local Swimarathon organised by the Rotary Club, helping to raise monies for both our club and other good causes the Rotary Club support. Members raised £840, resulting in the club receiving £340.

We ran a very successful Open Day; show casing our Youth and Nippers in their Club Championships, Seniors provided Lifesaving Rescue Demonstrations, we held a BBQ and cake sale, Grand Raffle.

We provide free water safety cover provided by our qualified members for the famous Pub to Pub annual race which is open to the general public and as a thank you we receive a generous donation from the organiser.

Financial Review

The club is in a healthy position with a balance at the banks standing at £81,500.13

This is split between two accounts;

NatWest for our general day to day running costs at £33,896.36 and

Barclays for our reserves and building maintenance fund at £47,603.77

‘qw

We keep on top of our everyday maintenance repairing and renewing as required. The building maintenance fund is built up to cover repairs and renewals that come with age but are expensive to afford generally ie the roof, the sea defence gabions in front of the clubhouse keeping storms at bay.

We replaced our front elevation balcony and Observation Tower windows last financial year but received the invoice in this financial year. We have had a few minor repairs this year to our Solar system and plumbing. We have also reorganised our storage with new racking to accommodate the new boards we have purchased.

Our reserves are built up to cover both the running costs of the club and to increase our resources as we expand our membership and activities.

We have introduced a rolling system of repairing and replacing our training equipment. This year after the rearrangement of our storage capacity we have purchased additional new boards. We have applied for a grant to increase our board stock further for the 2025 season with the aim of allowing more members to join and train with us.

We plan on keeping at least six months running costs as this just about covers readiness our busy beach season before all memberships are paid.
