Beaver Report

Well what a strange year it has been and not quite the one I had envisaged as my last as a Beaver leader. I have thoroughly enjoyed nearly 12 years of being involved with the Beaver Scouts and stepping down has been a difficult decision. So here goes for my last AGM report for Beavers.

It all started as a normal year with plenty of activities planned, starting with safety and emergency services. Identifying dangers around the home and garden, how to cross a road safely, what our emergency service do, how to call them and which one is best for different situations. The Beavers worked together to decide on how they would evacuate a building in the case of fire by placing pictures in the right order. They also put together a basic first aid kit of pictures deciding what each item would be used for before deciding if it was included.

There was a lot of running around games and quizzes about the scouting family and whether phases fitted beaver scouts, the beaver animal or were completely false.

We junk modelled our own imagined vehicles that had amazing features including some that would work on both land and water, we made boats from scouring sponges and raced them until they soaked up too much water and sunk!

Our last meeting before lockdown we managed to have a trip on the train from Hungerford to Kintbury watching out for other forms of transport along the way. Our first lockdown activity was to make easter egg holders.

During the first lockdown several beavers managed to complete digital awareness and communicator badges, some took part in other activity badges and sent pictures to the leaders as evidence. There was lots done towards the ‘Great indoors’ and Berkshire activity badges too. Some beavers took part in a ‘sleepover’.

When we returned to seeing our beavers it was very strange having two small groups on all but the first meeting where we all met outside to do some games. It was lovely working with our two smaller groups, we seemed to have one group who chatted and interacted and one group who were noisier but still seemed to enjoy the activities.

We made hedgehogs with fuzzy foam leaves, Halloween bats, pinned the spider on the web, made Catrina masks and found out about Day of the Dead Celebrations, we even tried guava juice, displayed Poppy’s in our windows for Remembrance Day, made pomanders and reindeer faces.

We helped our community by collecting food for the foodbank and managed to collect 118.7kg of food which equates to 249 meals. This means we helped 12 people have three meals each day for 7 days. A fabulous achievement by our beavers who had to deliver their donations to leaders homes during lockdown

number two.

Hopefully going forward there will be plenty of fresh ideas and new exciting activities as Kite takes on the role of leader. I would like to thank Kite for the support she has provided me in running beavers and wish her every success going forward, with the help of the parents who as always have provided their help on a rota basis and without whom we would not have been able to run during the past year.

1[st] INKPEN and KINTBURY CUB SCOUT REPORT 2020

A very unusual year, , but here are some of the things which did happen.

We have quite a full Pack with 24 Cub Scouts . Most of the older have moved up to Scouts, and to replace them we have welcomed several new Cubs who swam up from Beavers.

Baloo continues to jointly run the Pack and we couldn’t do without her.

We were also please to see Bagheera back with us for a short while and look forward to him being back with us again.

We also have Chil , our Young Leader who helps each week.

We started off in January with a Jungle Book theme and then moved on to the Home Help Badge which saw us cleaning, ironing, cooking, tidying. sewing on buttons and a rather fun evening with Cubs trying to put duvets into their covers. Not surprisingly, their Parents were keen for them to complete this Badge.

Then we went into crafty mood , making an international themed Totem Pole with each Six choosing a country. This was to be part of our entry at the District Handicraft Competition and most Cubs made some super individual crafty items. As a Pack we did really well and came

second overall. On the day, there was a Craft workshop , and along with other

Cubs in the District, they spent an afternoon having a go at a variety of things – woodwork, macrame, clay modelling, ropemaking, pyrography to name a few.

The very next day, we came to a standstill as the COVID restrictions caught up with us and we could no longer hold our usual meetings.

During the summer term, Cubs were issued with weekly tasks to do at home, if they wished to. For the Teamwork and Team Leader Challenge , Cubs were asked to be part of a Family Team and take on responsibility for a Task at home. Many of the Cubs put their Home Help skills into practice.

Some also took part in the At Home Sleepover and slept somewhere different at home, making indoor dens or in a tent in their garden.

Page 4

In September, we could meet outdoors and we decided to try for the Athlete Badge. This was a fun Activity Badge, not too serious, which all Cubs could do while distancing.

We were then given the go ahead to meet indoors in smaller groups. So at the Coronation Hall, we painted plant pots and then planted crocus Bulbs.

In the November Lockdown we decided to hold a couple of Zoom meetings and these have been well attended. It has been quite a

challenge for the Leaders too as we tried to find some fun interactive things to do. We thought this would be an appropriate way to tick off parts of the Communicator Badge.

We were then able to hold a couple of face-to-face meetings. We tackled some logic games and made Christmas Crackers . The things we’ve learnt to do at 2 metres distance !

Several people have helped us throughout the year. Several parents came and helped with the Home Help Badge, and other parents came along when we need extra help. Also, Ian gets roped in from time to

time when we are short-handed.

As always our Group Executive Committee members have been supportive throughout the year,

Thank you to everyone.

Now we look forward to carrying out the activities we have planned for this year.

SCOUT TROOP REPORT TO THE 2021 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

I write my report for 20202 sat in my “office”,. This have been a very different times with us having to cope with Lockdown, Zoom meetings and not being able to meet face to face for most of the year.

The first three months ….

We had a Wide Game on Hungerford Common, cooked stir fry chicken in the Scout Hut for Chinese New Year, practiced fire lighting without matches and made popcorn.

We also had Pancake Races round the Car Park (using rubber disks and not real pancakes !) and made pancakes to eat.

We made brilliant posters for out April Jumble Sale ( which had to be cancelled so they were not used) and had a Karaoke session.

Then the Pandemic struck ….

We were unable to meet at all until we set up a couple of ZOOM meetings just before we broke up for Christmas. We were unable to have any camps or activities, the Crafty Craft race was cancelled and the brilliant International WINGS Camp we had signed up for did not take place.

----- Start of picture text -----
Setting up A working sundial Brownies made
Camp at Home made at “Camp” at “Camp”
----- End of picture text -----

We held an “At Home” camp where Scouts set up camp in their gardens or even in makeshift dens indoors. We had a meu and a programme of activities so that everyone was doing the same thing at about the same time.

We were able to resume Face

to Face meetings for a while but had to maintain social distancing which meant our Hut was too small and we had to move to the Coronation Hall and meet in two separate Groups.

The Leaders put their thinking caps on to find things we could do and we managed to play Bingo using map signs instead of numbers, had an Indoor “Hike”, played skittles and Pelmanism, carved pumpkins, made fires and lit sparklers for bonfire night, sent semaphore messages, made balloon powered cars and had an endurance race and played a Kim’s Game which is a test of memory.

Remembrance Day

We were not able to make our poppies and wreath this year and the usual Parade and Service were not able to take place. There was a simple Act of Remembrance on the 11[th] November which 2 Leaders attended and laid a wreath on behalf of the Group.

Thank You

We owe many thanks to our Assistants, Paul (Assistant Leader) and Martin. It would not have been possible to provide so much activity in this very difficult year without their help and support.

Looking forward, there appears to be signs of light at the end of the tunnel and we are all looking forward to getting back to normal as soon as we can.

Ivan Osborne (Scout Leader)

Treasurers Report for year ended 31[st] December 2020

2020 was a very different year. A year in which we did not do any of our usual traditional fundraising, but nevertheless had a record £33,000 income for the year.

We extended our fundraising campaign for the hut to the Good Exchange. This is an organization which matches charitable projects with charitable donors. It has been phenomenally successful so far receiving four large grants and many donations totally over £15,000.

We opened an account with Amazon Smile and West Berks lottery and started to receive our first donations. The generous Covid grants from West Berkshire Council added to the total income.

The good income was matched with similar level of expenditure as we started the hut extension project in earnest, laying the foundations and groundwork. We hope to complete the project in 2021 within our target budget of £50,000.

The main points to come from the year’s Group Executive accounts[(1)] are:

Young people’s subscriptions £ 4,312 Fundraising Good Exchange £ 15,281 Covid Grants £ 11,334 Donations £ 391 Gift Aid £ 0 Misc (WINGS repayment) £ 2,000 Total £ 33,318

Section expenses[(1)] £ 609 Capitation fees[(2)] £ 2,684 Building maintenance £ 3,075 Fund raising costs £ 726 Hut Extension Project £ 25,877 Total £ 32,971

Notes

Finally, I would like to thank the members of the Committee and the leaders for their continued stewardship of the Scout Group through these challenging times. We look forward to a return of normal activities and using the new hut extension in the near future!

GROUP SCOUT LEADER’S REPORT FOR YEAR ENDED 31[st] DECEMBER 2020

How do we report the past year ?

The Beaver Report describes it as “strange”, the Cub Report as “unusual” and the Scout and Treasurer’s Reports as “different”. Nobody described it as “difficult”.

The first couple of months passed as normal, with plenty of activity and plans for the coming year. Then lockdown hit in March and everything came to a sudden stop.

Despite these setbacks we have managed to complete a fairly successful year ;

Looking forward we hope we can see some signs of light at the end of the tunnel and hope to be able to return to a more normal existence before the end of the year. We look forward to being able to :

Leadership

Leadership still presents the biggest challenge the Group has at the present time :

While we get plenty of offers of assistance, we desperately need people who are able to give a long term commitment to take on responsibility for running the Sections.

And Finally

On behalf the whole Group I to thank everyone who has helped us over the very difficult past year in any capacity, particularly :

Ivan Osborne

Chairman’s Report 2020 -2021

Hello, hope you are all keeping well.

What a strange and challenging time it’s been over the last year!

Well!

We managed to get a lot done on our new Storage Project over the last year, the old storage cabin was relocated over next to the Boys Club, ground was cleared, the new deep piled foundation slab was laid and left to cure.

In the meantime, we were very lucky and received some very nice donations, on review of our finances this meant we had just enough money to cover our next year’s Scouting / building expenses. So the new building was ordered, which is due to be erected by mid-April 2021 and the internal fit out by late summer (2021), which has been an amazing achievement considering what we all gone through over the past year, we still have the link corridor to complete and the solar panel to be installed.

Covid, has unfortunately put everything on hold, so many Scouting events have been cancelled / postponed over the last year, but we are getting through it slowly and will be ready to get going again as soon as we are allowed to.

Remember if you can provide Match Funding through your Employer or Business or gift aid, please could you make us aware, as this helps us significantly, it can really boost our funds which have been affected.

Thanks !

I can’t end without mentioning Vikki Wimbridge (Kingfisher) who has run our Beavers for over 12 years and will be leaving us it Easter 2021. Vikki has seen lots of young people start their Scouting Journey and we all thank her for all the work she has put in over the years and wish her well in her next project. We also thank Kit Gomez for taking over the Colony and wish her all the best.

I would also like to thank Sean Ogilvy who has being working very hard and silently in the background dealing with all of our financial needs though out this time, we still have all of bills to pay! And Ivan GSL with all he does in keeping things on track.

I would like to finish off by thanking the current committee members and leaders for all their help and support over the last changeling period.

If you are interested in helping with Scouting, please come and join us and have ago, when things get back to normal!

Stay Safe.

Kind regards

Mark Hunt
