Who can attend the setting?
Our trustees recognise the importance of equality of access and of opportunity. Children aged from 2 to 11 years from across Telford are welcome to attend the setting. The Pre-School offers funded sessions for 2,3&4-year-olds.
The Out of School club offers before and after school childcare (primarily for children attending Dothill Primary School) and a holiday club (open to a wider catchment) during all school holidays.
The setting works in partnership with parents’ and supports their requirements for their children, and has contact with parents, carers, other relatives, and childminders, as far as any legal constraints allow. We monitor the gender and ethnicity of children joining our setting to ensure that there is no unfair discrimination.
What activities does the setting offer?
The ethos within the setting is learning through play.
Learning is encouraged through exploring first-hand fun with age-appropriate activities, challenges and experiences. A wide range of activities provides experiences across the whole of the Early Years curriculum with a broad and balanced curriculum offered to all children attending the setting. Every child matters, and staff are expected to ensure activities and opportunities planned cater for every child’s individual needs and abilities.
Children are encouraged to be independent, and staff take the lead from the children, taking into account their current interests and needs when planning or scaffolding learning. The setting has senior members of staff with responsibility for special educational needs, behaviour and health and safety. There is a clear emphasis on children sharing, taking turns, building good relationships, and enjoying their learning. The executive director takes an active hands-on approach to monitoring the provision and resources so that the children have good quality learning experiences.
- What has happened throughout this year at Dothill Pre school and Childcare?
Dothill Pre-School and Childcare is a busy setting. Our manager continues to be committed to seeing the setting develop, ensuring the best possible outcomes for the children that attend. The children are eager to attend and often request to attend even when childcare for parents isn’t necessary. Feedback received from visitors and parents is very positive, mentioning the friendly atmosphere and warm, friendly staff.
As a setting we continue to be supported by our loyal and dedicated staff team. This year we had minimum staff changes with only one of our out of school club team leaving to pursue a career out of childcare and no other staff changes have occurred throughout the year.
Ofsted carried out our routine inspection at the end of January, the experience was very positive and we maintained our ‘good’ rating.
Early in the year we were approached by Telford & Wrekin to take part in the national ‘Covid Recovery Program’ this program enabled us to form strong links with another EY setting within Telford & Wrekin and we were able to share good practise with another EY setting out of area.
Throughout the year we have purchased staff training through a variety of providers, including Telford & Wrekin, Talking Childcare, Early Years Fundamentals and Early Years Foundation. We have also purchased support and training from Deborah Udakis, an independent Early Years consultant. As a setting we continue to buy into Telford & Wrekin ‘core package’ and welcome any support from our appointed Early Years Consultant. Our Section 11 audit was completed in November with no follow up actions necessary. Staff continue to attend all training when required and designated staff attend termly network meeting for safeguarding, SEND and Out of School clubs.
This year we have enhanced our EYFS curriculum by purchasing the ‘Spread the Happiness – Squiggle whilst your wiggle’ program, and offering weekly music sessions through an external provider, ‘Music Minors’, these enhancements have been funded through pupil premium funding. The staff have commented on the positive impact these enhancements are having on the children and the children are thoroughly enjoying the sessions, eagerly joining in each week.
We held our annual ‘Graduation’ ceremony for the children leaving pre-school transitioning to school, this was a social event and was well attended by parents and grandparents, a professional photographer took graduation photos of the children. The ‘animal man’ visited as an end of year treat for all the children attending pre-school.
The setting is continuing to develop links with Dothill Primary School and are actively working with the EYFS co-ordinator to ensure smooth transitions for all the children who will progress onto Dothill school.
The executive director and setting manager hold annual appraisal meetings and termly support and supervision meetings for all staff, these scheduled meetings have a health and wellbeing element embedded within them as well as areas for professional development. The setting manager also receives an annual appraisal and termly support and supervision meetings, these meetings are carried out by the executive director.
Annual DBS update service checks were carried out on all staff and trustees registered with the service. All staff and trustees continue to have up-to-date enhanced DBS checks in place.
The setting continues to support local secondary schools by offering placements to students in Year 10 carrying out their ‘works experience’ weeks.
The manager meets with the executive director on a weekly basis to share any safeguarding concerns and other relevant information.
The manager attends all trustee meetings and provides the trustees with a written report.
Child Protection/Safeguarding and Health and Safety remain a priority and underpins everything that takes place within the setting.
All staff attend monthly staff meetings, these meetings have an agenda and always include a child protection/safeguarding and health and safety element. Staff within the pre-school also attend a monthly EYFS meeting. Minutes of these meetings are kept on file and staff receive a copy for their own records.
Our Statutory Duty as a charity
As Trustees, we are confident that we have compiled with the duty in Section 4 of the Charities Act 2006 to have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Commission.
The Trustees would like to thank the staff of Dothill Pre-School and Childcare for all their hard work, support and enthusiasm and the parents who put their trust in the setting and bring their children here.
