CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT 2020

I have now completed 2 years as your Chairman and would like to thank the Committee who have been very supportive and although I really enjoy it there seems to be a crisis every year. Last year it was the move to Stoke Mandeville this year its Covid 19!! However, we will overcome it.

I would point out that this report covers until the end of 2020 as we have been unable to hold an Annual General Meeting.

The end of last year we had outings to Snowshill Manor, Rainham Hall and Eastbury Manor House, Warwick and Hanbury Hall all arranged by Dan McGregor.

The Autumn Quiz and Fish & Chips Supper also the Christmas Lunch was organised by Mary Singleton who arranges the excellent Coffee Mornings. Mary is one of the editors for the Magazine which is going from strength to strength. Well done to all the Editors.

We have had a variety of interesting Speakers for which we thank Sheila Page.

All the groups are thriving under the leadership of Jane Trow although some are not able to meet at this moment in time.

Ken Roberson is doing an excellent job of looking after the membership.

Our new Secretary Maureen Clarke is very thorough, how she does the minutes with us all talking at once I do not know but she is much appreciated.

Chris Lowe our Vice Chairman is still following up on other venues although that is stalemate at present.

Mike Park our Treasurer we cannot fail to admire how he produces such amazing spreadsheets. Thank you Mike for looking after our finances.

Greig and Andy organised a Ukulele Study Group at Benson in October where 100 players attended. It was a resounding success.

At the December meeting we had the Christmas Hat competition, it was good to see that some men entered into the spirit. This was followed by an

excellent musical presentation by our Sound Man, John Wilford. It brought back a lot of memories for all of us.

The New Year started well with trips arranged by Dan McGregor, also a Chinese Lunch etc but it did not last because the curtain came down on our meetings Covid 19 had arrived!

On 16[th] March an official Government statement was made and we had to suspend all U3A meetings and so it goes on. We were all hoping that it would end quite soon but of course it has not, so from April there have been no monthly meetings and it is still going on.

All events had to be cancelled, all speakers were cancelled. The committee have kept in touch via Zoom and we have been looking at ways in which we could meet. Some groups have been meeting on Zoom and of course there is the Website.

Obviously Zoom is the answer but because of the large number we had to apply and pay for a special licence, which we arranged. Some Committee members together with Derek Ayshford have watched courses about Zoom on line, I have done this also. So that is the way forward until such time as the virus is contained although at this present time is on the rise again.

We have therefore postponed the AGM until January 2021.

Sadly during this time three of our prominent members Tom Day, Alan Robinson and Roland Scroggs passed away.

In October we had our first Zoom meeting and approximately 80 + members joined us. We had a few hiccups but it was lovely to see members again.

Our speaker was one of our members, Stephen Logsdale, who gave us a talk about uses of Cannabis, which proved to be very interesting.

November meeting on Zoom was better and we were told that 20 groups were now using Zoom although other groups like the walkers are outside and therefore stick to the rules.

The meeting in December, we hope was a happy and entertaining one, this was largely due to Derek Ayshford who put together various entertaining acts

supplied by members on a video to show everyone. Members were asked to wear their Christmas hats and jumpers which they did. It appears everyone enjoyed the meeting.
