Registered charity no.1035144 Ofsted no.127613

Introduction

This report details the work carried out by St Michael’s Pre-school during the year starting 1 April 2020 and ending 31 March 2021.

St Michael’s is a committee- run pre-school, which has adopted and is working to the Pre-school Learning Alliance constitution. The setting is Ofsted registered (reference 127613). The pre-school operates from rented premises, at St Michael’s and All Angels Church Hall, 2 High Road, Wilmington, Kent, DA2 7EG.

It currently offers sessional childcare places for children aged between two and five years, Monday to Friday, from 9.15am to 12.15pm, during school term times. As of Jan 2020, it now offers two extended sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon whereby children stay for lunch (provided by the parents). This is not included in the 15 hours free funding and is chargeable to parents.

The pre-school employs nine members of staff on a part-time basis (one of who is a volunteer) and is licensed to have a maximum of 30 children per session.

Committee members

For the period up to 31 March 2021, St Michael’s Pre-school committee members were:

Fund raising and grants

A variety of fundraising events were held throughout the year, involving the children and families who attend the pre-school (Covid restrictions permitting). These included a Christmas raffle, online easter egg hunt, Happy school bag clothes collection and dress up days.

The Preschool received a Covid grant from the local authority of £4,200. The setting also received £4,441.78 from the government furlough scheme to pay towards staff wages during the lockdown period.

The total income from fundraising and grants this year was £9,632.49.

Events and parent partnership

Unfortunately, due to Lockdown and covid restrictions parents were unable to come into the setting. Celebrations were still held within the preschool with the children and staff. Regular updates were given to parents through email, The settings Facebook page, Newsletters and socially distance meetings, wearing face coverings when deemed necessary for a child’s wellbeing and development.

This year, the pre-school hopes to continue its family open mornings, at least once a term. These provide an opportunity for parents and carers to be involved in their children’s learning and strengthen their relationship with staff.

Finances

A copy of the audited financial accounts is attached. A meeting of the committee was held on 22nd October 2021, to approve them.

Conclusion

2020/21 was an extremely difficult year for St Michael’s Pre-school, with ongoing COVID restrictions and a second Lockdown between January 2021 and March 2021, during which the setting remained open. The setting continues to work through the pandemic helping its children and families as much as possible.

Staff and committee members continued to work to improve the facilities and experience offered to the children. Funds raised during the year, were put towards equipment and resources. Staff also undertook mandatory training, including safeguarding and child protection, food hygiene, first aid, and had free access a suite of continued professional development courses through Educare (portal provided by the early years alliance).

The pre-school continued to use its termly newsletter and Facebook page to keep connected with parents and give them an insight into, day to day activities. Unfortunately, Parent review meetings were not able to go ahead, due to COVID restrictions and government guidelines, however, a termly review was sent home to parents to update them on children’s individual progress, next steps and transitions. Going into the following year, the setting will need to follow government guidelines with regards to visitors into the setting due to the COVID pandemic.

St Michael’s continues to support the needs of the local community by providing safe, stimulating and affordable pre-school education, with the help of a dedicated and professional staff and committee. It is hoped this will continue to be the case for the forthcoming year – although, due to rising business costs and capped funding rates, the committee will need to give specific focus to future sustainability.
