Summary of our main achievements this year .We welcomed 26 brand new starters in September this year **SETTLING IN AND INITIAL OBSERVATIONS AND ASSESSMENTS.** 

- Our aim is to ensure that all staff promote a positive settling in process for all children attending, new starters AND those returning to Pre-School after the summer holidays. 

- We made initial observations and assessments of the children according to 

- certain areas. These observations involved parental input and observing children in each of the EYFS learning areas according to their particular age range. 

- We decided to take on areas of learning rather than groups of key children, we have divided key children among staff for their pastoral care, which helps parents to have a link to their childs’ development. With staff concentrating on certain areas gives us knowledge of ALL children rather than a small group. We observed, and made records of the Early Learning Goals that each child is already able to achieve, as an initial baseline assessment.

## **Friends. September 2020** 

LIT READING AND WRITING. 

EAD MATHS KUW People & Exploring & Numbers, communities, using media & shape space & the world, materials, being measure technology imaginative. 

This term has been very unusual due to the COVID -19 restrictions and guidelines. We have worked very hard to make sure that the building is as safe as it can possibly be. 

I have been in numerous discussions with Martin, the Centre manager regarding cleaning and the availability for us to stay behind after hours to clean and prepare the equipment and toys for the next day. He is trying to be accommodating. 

We have had to but some new equipment like coat racks, water bottle holders etc.. We now ask that children bring in their own snack and drink to save us time in the kitchen preparing. 

All children were asked to enter the building without a parent or carer, this was my biggest worry, but surprisingly this has been very successful .. 

Even for the little ones, albeit a bit confusing at first! 

**Making** PSE **Relationships Self** Now we are 3 weeks in, and the children are becoming **confidence** experts at removing their coats and gel-ing their hands. **Managing feelings & behaviour** 

We have also decided to move into the 21st century and go

onto Tapestry, this has .. and is, somewhat challenging, but we are slowly getting there. 

Hopefully our new parents appreciate the extra work we are putting into trying to understand it! 

With 2 staff having left to start their families we are now down to only 5 qualified staff, this has been a huge strain over the last few weeks but we are hopefully turning a corner as the children begin to settle in. 

We are beginning to look into taking on an apprentice. 

We have had to let Jo Jingles go on a Friday morning, such a shame after 20 years. We also said goodbye to French with Anke, but have replaced her with Spanish with Jo Carver who has come to us from the main school. We felt that this was a good move as the children will be doing Spanish with Jo when the begin school in September. The children are enjoying these sessions immensely and are already counting and singing in Spanish! 

We began with lunches in the main school, but with only being allocated with 20mins to eat a 2 course meal, we decided it was too rushed for the children as we wanted this to be a happy experience, unfortunately it was very stressful! We will hopefully try these again in January or when restrictions reduce regarding numbers and bubbles. 

Packed lunches do mean that the staff don’t get much of a break, but we are willing to cope with this until things change. 

## **OCTOBER 2020.** 

Due to COVID restrictions unfortunately all activities have been transferred to online sessions.

We continued with our strict COVID procedures with families wearing masks  and constant hand washing for children and staff. 

Due to family circumstances I was away from the setting until January, and the two deputies ran Pre-School, with no days off, managed all issues with regard to staffing, children and their families, and coped admirably, including having to follow continuous new COVID guidelines and their own jobs … all at the same time. My huge thanks goes out to them both, also to our administrator Carla, who stepped in when staff numbers were low. **THANK YOU ALL.** 

During this term we covered all areas of development, but concentrated mostly on the 3 Prime areas which are: Personal Social & Emotional Development - Physical Development and Communication & Language. 

**CHRISTMAS** - We were asked to decorate angels to hang in St.Bridget’s church, as the church was open on certain afternoons during December. 

The children acted out the story of Christmas with puppets, and knitted toys and also learnt ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ in Makaton. 

The children made Christmas cards and attempted to write their own name inside. 

We realise that the children need a little extra help this year in most areas, so we find ourselves going back to basics. 

All children are participating in circle time, and take turns to be the snack helper that day. 

We are still having packed lunches in our Pre-School room as the main school are only having key worker children at the moment.

## **Theme: The Gruffalo.**

Our rolling planning is working well, all staff are finding it less complicated and enjoy the flexibility. 

**iPad Time** in small doses! 

Helping the children with control and hand eye co- ordination. 

We went on a Spring Treasure Hunt looking for objects to match the pictures. We used positional language in regard to the Gruffalo story. We recognised numbers to quantity 1 - 10 and beyond.

We used the soft play to build and recognise shapes. 

LIT We worked on dot-dot sheets up to number 1 - 20. We weighed **READING AND** and measured the ingredients to make our own playdough **WRITING.** following the recipe and we made ‘shape animals’ out of Triangles, circles and squares. 

We worked on attention and relaying what happened next? During story time. Phonics have really come on, the children are now sounding out short words and beginning to read. 

We did a comprehension sheet, all about the Gruffalo story, 

all children were very confident regarding how the story ended and all the characters. 

PHYS 

**Moving & handling** Health & self care 

## **FEBRUARY 2021** 

Full of Beans with Danny is still a huge hit, the children learn about their muscles and various routines and stretches. We discuss healthy eating and why we get hot and why we must drink plenty of water. 

Outdoor play takes place on the field at the moment, due to COVID 

restrictions. We played football, hit balls with rackets and ran with confidence.

**Listening & attention** Understandi ng & speaking 

The field was muddy and wet, but the children enjoyed playing with wellies on and lots of changes of clothes. 

Fine motor skills were enhanced by doing lots of cutting with scissors, and pencil control when writing their own name. 

We encourage good manners and sharing, by playing table top games and taking turns. 

- **Reception Visits** Unfortunately our visits were cancelled due to COVID restrictions so we still hadn’t been down to visit the classrooms, but luckily  the reception teachers popped up to see us as often as they could. 

This month we took on two new apprentices, they each have a mentor

within the setting and we have them for 12 months. 

## **EASTER  2021** 

We had lots of fun on an easter egg hunt around the church yard! Lots of vey excited children!! 

We also made chocolate easter nests and counted the eggs and chicks. 

## **SUMMER TERM 2021.** 

Luckily the weather was very good to us and we spent a lot of time outside, exploring the field and getting a lot of exercise. 

The children made binoculars and we went on a ‘Bear Hunt’ through the little woodland area on the field, then we had a teddy bears picnic in the sunshine. 

We were allowed to go down for lunch in the main school for 1 week only, and then we decided due to another outbreak of COVID, to continue packed lunches back at preschool. 

## **LEAVERS PARTY** 

We arranged a fun afternoon for the leavers,  parents were unable to attend due to COVID restrictions, but we booked Anna, Elsa and Olaf to join us and to teach us some dance moves! The children loved it! As a surprise for the children, we ordered Artisan Gelato to bring ice cream for all. 

What an unusual year it’s been!!
