Hampton in Arden is a small village preschool offering morning play and development sessions to 24 children on four mornings per week, during term time. The preschool is run by two managers (job-share), one deputy manager and six qualified staff members as well as a committee of parents and ex-parents. The activities and objectives of the Preschool are to provide three hour sessions to children addressing the learning outcomes of the EYFS curriculum, providing a safe and stimulating environment for 2 and 3 year olds to support their transition to nursery at age 3. Many children attend the nursery at the village school after attending the Preschool and so there are established close links between the staff in both settings. The Preschool also provides a valuable source of activities and a sense of community for local residents with young children, which is becoming increasingly important as the village grows.

During the 2022-23 year, the Preschool has put funds into updating materials and equipment used by the children and staff during sessions as well as improving internal processes by investing in computer equipment and an internet facility to enable better communication between staff and parents as well as accounting software to streamline treasury processes. Investment has also gone into updated staff uniforms in order to encourage the promotion of the preschool locally. Finally, the Preschool has also commissioned some local children’s entertainers to provide sessions based on specific topics, such as the Chinese New Year, both contributing to the children’s awareness and education as well as maintaining the sense of community links.

During 2022-23, most of the Preschool’s income is fee income from parents and Solihull MBC. The Preschool also receives parents’ voluntary contributions to top up the funded fee income for 3-year-old placements and continues to receive a small monthly income from the charitable clothing bank that was launched in May 2019. Additionally, the staff and parents have raised funds through various projects they have organized, including children’s Christmas tea towels, t-shirts and rucksacks for the children as well as holding a toy raffle at the annual local summer festival. Overall unfortunately however, for the year 2022-23, the preschool made a significant loss and will be more reliant on donations in 2023-24.

Hampton-in-Arden Preschool has a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating. The staff continue building great relationships with the children and parents and children are making good progress whilst at

the Preschool. Attendance at the Preschool also enables smoother transition to the local village nursery for those children who may have found this challenging and overwhelming.

Parents whose children attended the Preschool during 2022-23 have provided the following testimonials for the Preschool:

“Hampton In Arden preschool is such a wonderful enriching place to send your child. All 3 of my children have attended between the years 2021 and 2023 and thoroughly enjoyed their experience there. The staff are phenomenally talented, kind and thoughtful and the facilities fantastic for outdoor learning and a safe open space. Not only did they encourage and care for my children, but they offered social interactions and engagement that they wouldn’t have had otherwise. We had no need for a private nursery, but play, exposure, and learning were all top of the list. I would not hesitate to recommend the preschool to anyone.”

“My son attended Hampton preschool last year and I cannot express how thankful I am to all the staff there as they not only supported him, they supported me too as my son has global developmental delay and is in the process of a diagnosis of autism. They catered for his needs and made sure he had the 1 to 1 support he needed and put together support plans and referrals to the local SENCO. The preschool still support me as the setting he is in now still requires additional information from them, and nothing is ever a bother for them. Staff at Hampton Preschool are very approachable and friendly and very good with the children that attend”

“I would highly recommend Hampton in Arden Preschool. Both my little ones spent 2 years there and the care and attention showed to them by the staff was second to none. They skipped in everyday without hesitancy - something which I have heard is very unusual with other settings. They were given a fantastic foundation for moving into full time education and have made the leap brilliantly - thanks in large part to the preschool! If you’re thinking of sending your little one there don’t hesitate! It’s brilliant.”

“My little boy went to Hampton in Arden pre chool and loved every minute, the staff treat all the children as if they were their own and help them grow and develop all the skills they need to move onto their next adventures. They made it so much fun each and every day with such a variety of activities and always got them outside exploring! My son absolutely loved it and I can’t thank them enough!”

“Both of my children attended Hampton-in-Arden Preschool and absolutely loved it. They enjoyed the range of activities offered and spending lots of time outside in the lovely Preschool garden. It is a very nurturing environment and the Preschool team were fabulous with my eldest son who needed SENCO intervention for his speech development. In my opinion it is an outstanding provider of early years childcare and I would highly recommend it.”

“My daughter and son attended Hampton in Arden Preschool both for 2 years each. We could not recommend it enough. We encourage anyone to go there. The preschool is a warm and welcoming place with so much space indoors and outdoors. The outdoor space was wonderful for our children, including having the park area, the woods, just so much

for them to do. The staff made the garden area up fantastically with always exciting things to do. Special events throughout the year, ie Easter, Christmas. Parents were welcomed in for little shows and the room was beautifully decorated. The kindness of the staff was outstanding. Putting our child at ease everyday, they would skip in! The amount of joy they had from being there was great to see. They were always accommodating and daily feedback when collecting our child was always greatly received. Yearly assessments provided to us so we knew how our child was getting on was great. Feedback from our children, asking to go back once being picked up and arriving at home showed how much joy they got from there.”

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Hampton-in-Arden Pre School

I report on the accounts of the Pre School for the year ended 31 August 2023, which are attached.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

Basis of independent examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act

have not been met; or

  1. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
