The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2020.
Principal activity
Friends of Kilmorie is a primary school Parent and Teachers' Association that organises various school events for social and fundraising purposes. Any surplus made is used to buy equipment and services for the school.

Structure, governance and management
The governing document of the charity is its constitution, as amended 16 October 2014 and the charity is constituted as an association.
Trustees are appointed by members of the association at the Annual General Meeting.
Objectives and activities
The Friends of Kilmorie is a Parent and Teacher Association as well as a registered charity for Kilmorie School, with the purpose of building and maintaining the invaluable community between the school and its families while raising funds to support the children’s education.
Our main purpose as the Kilmorie PTA is to support and advance the education and wellbeing of pupils in the school by:
• developing effective relationships between the staff, parents and others associated with the school
• engaging in activities or providing facilities or equipment which support the school and advance the education of the pupils.
We achieve the above by helping the school to fund engaging experiences that support pupils' learning and increase their cultural capital; organising community activities and events to bring staff, parents and the wider community together; and funding the purchase of facilities and/or equipment to support the school and enhance pupil wellbeing.
Annual community events like our Christmas and Summer Fairs are intended to act as a stepping stone for increased parent/carer engagement in school life. In 2019-20 we funded curriculum books and a classroom interactive touch screen. Educational provisions such as these give our children advancements they may not otherwise have received. Over the last two years, we have raised money to fund the conversion of an existing art room into a multi-purpose space that can also be used for science; an outdoor sensory reading room and playground enhancements. These projects are intended to contribute to a more rounded educational experience for the children and to help promote pupil health and wellbeing.
Achievements and performance (Chair's summary)
The 2019-20 school year was unusual and challenging from a fundraising perspective. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the virus control measures in place since March, we were unable to proceed with our programme of planned fundraising events. Cancelled events included the Early Years Garden Party, Quiz and Curry evening and the Summer barbecue, which has historically been one of the highest earning events of the year.
The Committee made the decision to suspend active fundraising on the basis that lockdown was a challenging and stressful time for most families with some experiencing financial hardship. Instead, we focussed our efforts on raising spirits and helping the school community continue to feel connected. A poster competition was held in March for children to design a banner thanking key workers and the winning design displayed outside school. From the start of May, the Committee produced a new monthly magazine entitled ‘Kilmorie Connect’, which included news and information relevant to the school and local area, topical issues such as Black Lives Matter, interviews with school staff and pupils and suggestions for activities to help pass the time during lockdown. Consequently there has been a significant decrease in fundraising income, as well as associated expenditure. However, we had a boost in donation income largely due to a single corporate donation from the employer of a Kilmorie parent.

The amount of funds donated to the school also decreased relative to last year. Some fluctuation in this amount is normal as it depends on the nature and volume of items and projects the school would like funded. However, the pandemic and related virus control measures forced a reassessment of plans by the school senior leadership and caused delays in implementation of projects that the school had planned for the 2019-20 financial year.
Further details of our fundraising events are summarised in note 1 of the accounts. The surplus from these events was used to make donations to Kilmorie Primary School as well as other causes. The amounts donated are summarised in note 2 and 3 of the accounts.
Financial review
The association generates most of its income from fundraising events and has minimal overheads. As this income stream is uncertain, the association avoids committing to expenses that cannot be covered by existing reserves. It is the policy of the association to maintain sufficient reserves to finance a typical year's programme of fundraising events.
COVID-19 and effect on 2020-21
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the school remained closed for a significant proportion of the academic year and it was necessary to cancel the Friends usual programme of fundraising events once again. While social distancing measures and prohibitions on large gatherings remain in place, the Friends have continued to find alternative ways of bringing the Kilmorie school community together and raising additional funds for the school. It is expected that the Friends of Kilmorie will increasingly need to raise awareness of its work and promote its fundraising events via online means, such as email and social media, and the trustees will investigate the most effective ways of doing this. One avenue being considered is the possibility of creating a dedicated Friends of Kilmorie website.
To mitigate the risk of reduced activity and income, the Friends will continue to utilise and explore other methods of fundraising for the 2020-21 school year. These include crowd funding, grant funding, corporate donations and payroll giving, as well as hosting virtual events. However, it remains uncertain whether the Friends of Kilmorie will be able to financially support the school at historic levels for the duration of the pandemic.

We will work together as a cohesive team that includes, parents, staff, children and the wider community.
How we support the school
Financial support
• We will find new ways to fundraise for a range of benefits for the school. These include ongoing support for school trips for every class (once virus control measures allow), for class activities and workshops, for the Kilmorie outside areas and for new equipment as required.
• We will continue with corporate fundraising (primarily Estate agent sponsorship of the two main events) as well as to pursue other opportunities such as matched funding.
Publicity and building our community
• We will coordinate events throughout the year to engage with the entire school community. These events will help build on our already strong sense of community, celebrate our wonderful school, and raise funds for projects such as those outlined above.
• We will continue to promote our work and support the school, with newsletters, emails, our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages, and by networking with parents at coffee mornings and evening meetings, building on our ethos of being inclusive to all and supportive of our school

The trustees confirm that to the best of their knowledge, there is no information relevant to the examination of which the independent examiner is unaware. The trustees also confirm that they have taken all the necessary steps to ensure that they themselves are aware of all relevant information and that this information has been communicated to the independent examiner.

For the year ended 31 August 2020
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Friends of Kilmorie ("the charity") for the period 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2020.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
• the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
