Charity law requircs Ihc trustc¥s tu prepare financial staiements fur each financial year, which givc a true and lair

In preparing those financial statements the tN&tees are required to..
a) select suitablc accounting policies and thcn apply tiiem consistcnily;
b) make judgJ¥mcnls and estimates that are reasonable and prud¢nt',

THE ARCHER TRUST
C) state whether the policies &dopted ar¢ in ac£ordance with applicable accounting standards. subJ￿t to any
mat¢rial departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements.
d) prepare financi81 stal¢m¢nts on th¢ going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume that the
charity will continue in busines8.
Th¢ trustee5 are responsible for keeping proper accountin8 records which disclose with reasonable accurncy at
any lime the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ¢nsur¢ that the financial statements comply
with the Charities Act 201 l. They are also responsible for safeguarding th¢ asset5 of the charity and hence for
taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud or oth¢r irregularities.
Obje¢tiv¢J And Activities for th¢ publit benefit
Prlnclpal objecilves
The principal objects of the trust as sel out in it5 constitution
l To relieve suffering amongst the ag¢d. impotent or poor.
2 To advat)ce education.
3 To advance the Christian religion. and
4 To help such other charitsble objects as the trustees may think fit.
Acilvliles
Th¢ trust a¢hiev¢$ its objectives by making grants to charities.
Granl nwklngpollcy
Granls are mad¢ in accordance with the objectives of the trust. When allocating grants, the trustees favour small
chariti¢s which provide support lo defined groups of disadvanlage or marginaiised people, which are Lompetently
In8nfj8ed and able to provide upto-date accounts, and which would be significantly assisted by a grant of between
£1,000 and £5,(X)O,
Applications for grants are Invit￿ in a number of ways.. those who are given grants, ex¢ept for oneryoff items, are
invited to apply again; and the trustees advertise the Trust's criteria for applications on its website
www
hert
. Any applications for grants should be made in writing to the trust's regist¢r¢d addr¢8s &$
shown on page l.
Publlc bene
The trustees ¢onfirni they have complied with their dut1¢8 uftd¢r section 17(5) of the Charities Act 2011 to refer
lo th¢ Buidanrx contained in ¢h¢ Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the
Trust's aims and objective5 and in settin8 the grAnt making policy for the year.
Achfievementj And performance
During the year, grants totalling £263,350 (2021: £156.250) were mude to various registered charities and the
details ar¢ given in not¢ 4 to the financial stat¢ments, In vi¢w of the modest level of dividends being paid from
the inveslment portfolio, the trustees have transferred £230,000 from designated to general funds to enable them
to maintain and in¢r¢ase the level of grants b¢ing paid out.
Flnaneldl revlew
The death of Catherine Arch¢r means that th¢ Twst will no long¢r be rffeivin8 donations from her each year which
have mad¢ up the vast majority of the Trust's donation income. HOW￿¢r, the Trust exp¢cls to [￿c1Ve a substantial
legacy from her which will SI￿71f1¢antIY in¢￿a5¢ the net assets of the Trust. £1.300.000 of this legacy has been
reco8ni5ed as income during th¢ financial year.
The inv¢stm¢nl perforniance during the year, an increase in value of £96,166 (2021.. increase £360,140), is
satisfactory. The trustees h8v¢ appointed two diffe￿￿1 investh?ent managers, Ruffer LLP and Investec Wealth &
Investment Limited, who tsk¢ signifi¢antly different approaches. to manage approximately half ea¢h of the trust's
investment portfolio. The Inv¢stec portfolio is closely aligncd to the st￿k market and gives back gains made during
a bull market when the market crashes. as it did in March 2020. Th¢ Ruff¢r portfolio tends to unde4)¢rforni the
market during a bull market and then do spe¢t4cularly w¢ll at a tim¢ of dislwation. as it did in March 2020. The
Ruffer p)rtfolio perforn)ed better than the InVe￿e Portfolio duriftg the Y￿ ended 31 March 2022.

THE ARCHER TRUST
The reseN&8 ofthe trnst have dectrased by £144,56l (2021,. increase £387,736) durlng the yearto £2.101,556 (2021:
£2,246,117).
At 5 April 2022 the trust's investments were valued at £1.946.716 (2021: £1.927,265). The trust has chosen not to
adopt forn)al ethical investment policies. The policy of the tru5*es is that the funds are managed on th¢ basis of
generating a balance between capital growth and inwme. Investment perfomiance is compared to a benchmad(- for
Ruffer. th¢ totsl net return compared to the return on casK for Inv¢ste¢ to an investh)ent sector ben¢hmork. The

P2rtof the portfolio achieved atot41 return net of feesof 7.4 /0 compared to a benchmark of 8.70/•. Rufferhastherefore
a¢hieved its objeclive for the year and Inveslec has failed to do go, even though its a¢thal return was higher than
Ruffer's.
Reservespolicy
It is the policy of the trustees to spend the income of the general ￿nd on ¢harit8ble grnrtts so as to keep the
b3lance on the general fund ¢10s¢ 10 zero. Donations and inv¢stm¢Tht gains and losses go into the desisryjaled
investment fund which the trust¢¢s use to generate income. The trustees hav¢ the discretion to tronsf¢r funds
from the designated to th¢ 8ener81 fvnd to enable them to make additional Brant paymcnt5 should they choose to
do so.
Plansfor iheful&re
The trustee8 intend io continue to seek to maximisc returns from investments with a balance between income and
¢apital growth. Th¢ inv¢stment of capit&l and unsolicited donations are the only sources of ongoing income, and
fvnds are invested with the object of ensuring that the capital fund r¢tsins its apwoximate value in the medium
terni.
Remuner￿10￿ ofthe Iruslees
The trustees do not receiv¢ any remunerfition for their s¢rvi¢e$, but may receive reasonable ￿1mbUr$¢Ment of costs
incurr¢d on trust business. All trust¢es have waived any reimbursement of costs for the p¢riod.
