Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

Before I give my report on the last year’s activities of the Charity, may I say how much we miss the presence of Dorothy Cooke. She was a founding member of the Friends and at the moment is recovering from a fall, which has prevented her travelling to the Abbey today.

Before we begin the Agenda I wish you to consider a change, agreed to by your Committee, of the position of Chairperson. Last year I gave notice that I could only serve up to this AGM, and we have decided to share the position of Chair between Philippa Spens and Isobelle Georgechanging year and year about. Can I ask for a show of hands please, and now a seconder.

Thank you, and now to my Report.

Few events were held here last year as a result of the aftermath of the Covid epidemic, but we were active with the PCC on funding the repairs to the building. Plans were put in place for the repair of the Tower roof and the West Lytch Gate, which are taking place at this moment. Our keen eyed builders noticed a few minor, but potentially dangerous, faults at high level. These are also being rectified, leaving a need for roof work over the medium term, on the N. and S. Ambulatories.

The Friends have indicated that they would assist in both projects.

Forgive me if I now digress a little. This has a remarkable wonderful building acoustic, designed that way by the Cistercians, but enhanced when the Scudamore conversion to a village church took place in 1632. This left the Transept and crossing as an uncluttered space, without any pillars to affect the sound, judged by many to be the best in the SW Midlands. No wonder that it was chosen as the venue for Music Festivals in the 1960s, attracting the young Russian pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy as a performer.

I am very proud that the Friends helped to revive the tradition when HRH Prince Charles and the MICC promoted the pianist Maria Peres here in 2002. I was privileged to be ’on hand’ during her rehearsal in the afternoon, in an empty Abbey. There appeared to be a problem with one key of the beautiful Steinway piano, and Maria called for a Japanese man—her personal piano tuner--to investigate. He proceeded to remove the entire keyboard from the piano. I could only mentally calculate how long we had before Royal footsteps would be heard in the Crossing. Never fear, all the parts went back, and the audience enjoyed a

wonderful concert. Subsequently other world renowned recitalists appeared at the yearly Friends Music Festivals. Concerts for Craswall are now keeping the tradition alive with two concerts this year.

I wish to thank the Committee for all their hard work over many years, and wish them well in the future. They are willing to serve another year. That concludes my report.
