WMIP Membership
The Institute'5 activities are mainly carried out by members as unpaNI volunteers and all members are strongly
encouraged to contribute to the life of the Institute in è wide variety of way5. We aim to work together to support
each other and to move the Institute forward, in the bdief that what we offer is socially. professionally and
personally valuable.

The current membership structure (adopted in 20161 allows for the following categories of membership..
Professional. Clinical Associate. Student. Affiliaie and Retired. We also have Honorary members. who are awarded
this category of membershtp in recognition of their special services to psythotherapy andlor to the Insiitute. Full
details of the membership categories are available on the website.
WMIP Membership CommEttte processes applications. deals with accreditation issues and oversees the WMIP
referral service. In 2019 the committee developed a UKCP Accreditation Process lamerided slightly during the
2020 UKCP Or8anisaiional Member Review reporrl to enable WMIP to accredit suitably qualified professionals to
UKCP. The committee is also seeking ways of èttrattirbE a more dNerse membership. The Board thanks the
Membership Committee and Rachel Dunkley Jones, who operates the Referral service for iheir hard work. time,
and dedicztion to the life of the Institute in these areas.
WMIP fthi(s Committee play5 a key role in maintaining Standards. The challenge of working within both UKCP

ethically and within an ever-changing regu13tory frarnework. The Board thanks this hard-working committee for
its essential contributions to the Institute.
WMIP CPD. Events and Strategy Group continues to work hard to faee the challenge of rnisin8 the Institute's
profile through the provision of events- and satisfy the profe55Tronal needs of its mernbers.
The Board is especially grateful lor the group5 dedication to rising to the challenges of continuin8 to provide
events Via Zoom during this second year of pandernic and changing restrirtions on social life.
WMIP'S Spring Conference The Llse and Abuse of Power in Thtraprf was held online via Zoom on Saturday 20th

A number of new member5 Sbgned up following the event and a healthy profit made lor the 018anisatbon.
Work has continued in developing membership. with the creation ol the Affiliate members. reading group. which

analytical paper to read in advznce and then discuss together.
The Power in Therapy conference èlso began to work to address the issue of Cultural diversity within the Institute.
The theme of racism treated enerey. passion. and interest within delegates and those workin8 to put together the

Thank you to Rachel Dunklèy-Jone5 and Pauline Higham for reading in their Final QualifyinÉ Papers to the

energy and commitment to the organisation and has 50wed the seed for a number of new and interesting event5
and CPO ideas for 2022. We are hopeful for zn excitine year of activity ahead.
PublSc Benefft
In pfepafin8 this report. the Board of Tru5tee5 has had due regard to the Charity Commi55iors's guidance on public
benefit. Thi5 sets out the atceptable charitable purposes which allow an organisation to claim charitable status.
The Trustees consider that the aims and artbvities of WMIP meet these requirements under the Following
headings=

al The advancement of education- by promotin& sustainin& and increasing individual and
collective knowledgè and understanding of theory. sk￿115. and expertise through specialist
psychotherapy training.
bl The advancement of health or the saving of Itves- by improving access to psythotherapy.
including sorne low-fee referra15 as available and by upholding proper 5tandard5 of practice
through traintn& accreditation. CPD and the work of our ethics committee.
The individual work of many of our rnembers in delivering services to vulnerable and disadvantaged group5 such
as refugee5. VlCtim5 of domestic aThd sexual abuse. infants. and their primary carers. those 5truBgling with
addictions etc. is a further way in which WMIP adds ¥alue to society by supporting such work. In addition. many
of our member5 have risen to the challenge of providin8 psychotherapy online svpporting the mental health of
dients during the pandemiL
Strategrc Rep¢xt
Achie¥ements and Performance
As noteL4. the Institute has adapte¢J to ways of workin8 providin8 online access to CPD, events and meetings. The
Analytical Psychotherèpy Trainine continued by moving its teachings and publtc letture programme online as
needed and gralyually reintroduting in person teaching end events as restrictions allowed. The Board
acknowledges all ihe hard work thèt wertt into makine thi5 adaptation possible. There are oiher smaller specialist
groups within ihe InStit￿e that have toniinued to mett online. The life of the Instttute has continuÈd albeit in a
different form.
S•fe8uardinz Steerlng Group
The Safeguarding Steering Group was set up in Oecember 2020. following the UKCP recommendations made at
the last quinquennial review. The group has met 3 number of times. with the aim of ernbedding more of
safeguarding culture across the organisation. Requests went out to the membership at the AGM and
subsequently for anyone with experience in the field ro step fovward to beeome WMIP'5 Designated Saleguardin8
Lead, but unfortunately no one was found.
The group made contact with other Training organiiations and Psychotherapy Membership Organi2ation5 (The
Guilé, SAPI to ascertain their approaches to saleEyarding within syllabuseslpolioeslmember communications.
A number of cornmunications to members via bvlletin have been written to highlight the Issue5 and give
rnember5 more information- for example vignettes gNin8 examples of safeguarding scenarios for members to
consider and l¢nks to safeguarding advice on Working with Vulnerable childrenladults on Birmingham City Countil
website. plus links to UKCP/BPC safeguarding policie5. Members were also told about the possibility of
sale8uardiA8 training in the future.
The group met wilh Dr Sally Beeken. BPC Registrar. in October to discuss WMIP'S position with regards to
safeguaréing. Sally praised the organisation for what has been done to raise the issue and embed a
5afeguaréirtg culture and committed to BPC 5UPPOrting WMIP with this. The group talked io Sally about the
training options ￿5@3￿Ched to date. Sally highly recommended Sonia Applebvs irainin& who offers bespoke
safeguardinB training for psychotherapists. The Broup are researching the options for dates in 2022.
Growln8 Membership
DurinE the year to September 2021. membership numbers have had a sli8hi increase to 103. which has since
intreased to 105 between l October 2021 and 30 November 2021. New affiliate members have joined as a result
ol the SprinE Conference 2021. This was promising and while there is a long way to 80, the Board saw this as
hopeful sign

The Trusiees continue to seek ideas for growing the membership. This is a matter of uigency as membership fees
are the primary sourte of income forthe Institute. It remains rhe case that rf membership revenues andlor other
income from evènts. short coiifse5 etc. do not increase in the next 12-24 monihs. as tosts inevitably do increase,
the Institute will need to review tts 3irn5 and artwities.
Growin8 membership is crucial not only for financial reasons. Our members ARE the Institute.. all of the main roles
in the Institute are voluntary and we rely entirely on the energy. enthusiasm and active participation of members
to continue. Those member5 who join committee5 and working parties. organising events. rnanaging the library
and liaising with 8PC and UKCP find it enjoyable and rewardin& especially when there are many hands to share
the work. Committee work counts as non-clinical CPD hours since ir contributes direttly to our confidence and
developmeni as professionals.
The Board understands what a difficult year tr has been with the ongoin8 pandemic cavsin8 uncertainty, anxiety
and distress in many forms. Adaptlng to changing pandemic restrictions. as they have evolved, has been
challenging to us all and the 8oard is mindful of this.
Impro¥lTrg Systsrns and Communlr•oion
Jools RoRers. WMIYS administraior. has worked throu8hout the year to improve systems and processes_ Along
with Kate leeson. our events and marketing coordinator. both are vital to impvoving systems and communication.
Kate and Jools worked together to facilitate the launch of a new. contemporary WMIP website and transferall
iThformarion from the previous web51te.
The Board is aware the new website Still needs work in the need to go through all of the information Contained
and we welcome arty members who may want to work on this projert.
Jools and Kate, with their loint expertise an¢J experience provide a streamlining of communication. T￿ether thev
sypport members in difterent ways such as through or80n￿Ing events, assistin8 committees. and maintaining
records. They provide invaluable support to the Board thr￿gh feedback from their respective roles and also
SU8gestin8 innovative ideas to improve how the Institute runs.
Another internal communication vehicle 15 our regular e-Bulletin which is edried by Shane Sneyd. The e- Bulletin
conrains event5 listings, news and review5. information about rnembers and committee work and other key
reminders about professional practiee. The Trustees would like to thank Shane for his continued work on the
e-Bulletin which is very much app￿tiated and is a crucial ir8redient within the Insiitute.
To enhance improving systems and comrnunitation, professional member Pauline Hi8ham stepped forward. and
was elerted as the Chair of ihe Board of Trustees to provide a wnt Lif contart for the work of the Board.
Board of Trustees
The Board wa5 delighted to welcome Rev Mary Kent, a professional member to the Board. We appreciate her
long experience and Contrib￿lon to the Instilute. Jinny Svmner. stepped down from the Board after 6 years.
service to WMIP. Her contributiorn. wisdom. Jnd commitment to WMIP durinE these years canrsot be quantified.
We are grateful she has now stepped forward to bring her year5 Qfexperience to the Membership Committet
and Eihics Committee.
The Board is currently constituted of two professional members and three lay trustees. To maintain a balance
betweeTr lay and professional trustees at leasi one or more professional mernber is needed. The Board would
greaily appretiate other members coming forward to serve on the Board to offer their enlightened professional
counsel to the Board.
Alan Beadle. Honorary Treasure¥. will be stepping down from the Board at the AGM 2022. His service to WMIP
and attention to detail is trvly appreciate(1 and he will be 8reaily missed.
The Bgard looked for and found a Treasurer to replace Alan. The hope was we would find someone who would
work alongside Alan for a period of time prior to Alan's stepping down. Bryan Arnott stepped forward in Ju5y 21
and has been quietly working Wlth Alan. We are extrerne￿ gratefvl for his willingnes5 to bring his financial
knO%￿edBe and experience to WMIP.
Bryan ts a retired management accountant with 40 years. experience in man￿aCtUr￿nB and charttable work. It is
hoped he will bring a professfjonal ovemewto managing WMIWS finances going forward.

We are a150 mindful that the Board does veflertthe diverstty of the tommunity WMIP seryes, rather it fefletts
the non-diversity of the Institute. This is a matter of concern raised 31so by UKCP at their recent Review and which
the 8oard is taking Seriously.
Finally, we would like to thank all those members who have been 5UPPtsrtTve. collaborative and actively involved
in WMIP during what has been a partiiularly difficult year. Membe¥s are the collective beatin8 heart ol the
Institutè which is our community. and we are fortunatethat so many art prepared to give their time.

Consolidated 2019-20
Overall. 2020-21 was a difficult year for the finan￿$ of WMIP. not helped by Co¥id and the restrictions whkh
affected our ability to organise meetin8s, events and conferences, and ihere-by* to meet the essential purpose of
WMIP to fullil our charitable objectives.
The net result in 2020-21 was that WMIP as a whole made a loss of just over £3.OCK). Looking on the positive
side. this is an improvemeni on the prwovs year when our loss was close to £7,IKJO.
In 2020.21 the TCPP was linalising their plans to close and this is refieued in their accounts. which show no
income durin8 the year and only a small expendiiure on Jdministration.
The APTC has. on the other hand. was financially successful maktng a very respectable profit.
The central accounts showed an increased income 5snce last year but also a significantly increased expenditure
mostly on admsnistration and marketyng. and refunds to members who had overpaid in previous years (see
below).
On a very positive noie, the Spring Conference, held in March 2021. helped to boost overall income during the
year and was deemed by all to be a success.
In Novèmber 2020, during the preparation otihe 2019-20 3¢tounts. it was discovered that a number of WMIP
members had over paid their membership fees for several years. Repayments totalling several thousand pounds
io the mernbeis affeaed wefe made in 2020-21 and appear in the account5 being reported here. Most ofthe
overpayments were due to members who set up standin8 orders as well as paying through the mort recently
introduced-Go Cardless- system. We are urging all members to cancel their standing orders and use the more
efficient-Go Cardless- payment system- Ihis way they should be charged the correct amount each year.
The overall 1055 in 2020-21 was bvdgetetl for in part by the Trusiees.. that Said. the loss in the central a£counts
was disappointing. We had allocated funds to cover the invalvable work undertaken by Kate Leeson on
marketing and helping the events grovp. This work has brou8hi in a number ol new members but at the same
time there has been a shift in the membership profile me8nin8 thai the totsl membership income has remained
static.
In an attempt to bring our finance5 into balance in future years. the Trustees have agreed that the membership
fees in October 2021 will need to rise 35 shown in the table below. If we can control our expendlture such that
It remains stead this increase will 80 some way towards eliminating the deficit.
