## County President’s Report 2022 - 2023

What a year it’s been for Cambridgeshire Young Farmers!

I’ve been part of the federation since I was 13, so I’ve been in this organisation for at least 10 years now! So, I was honoured to be voted in as president this year. I hope I’ve been more of a help than a hinderance but that remains to be seen. I’ve tried not to use the phrase “well I wouldn’t have done that in my day” too much and no one’s told me to shut up yet so I hope I’m doing a decent job!

It’s been great to see so many of you attend the competitions throughout the year and I’ve been really impressed with the member’s skills and enthusiasm, no matter the challenge. Some of the highlights for me were:

- Pumpkin carving- so many talented entries and a few very un-artistic ones but everyone gave it a good go and had fun on the night and I enjoyed judging them!

- Stock judging was another favourite event of mine, this year I brought my son Jack along to have a look at the animals and to get him ready for his first stock judging competition in 10 years’ time. Definitely didn’t bring him for a free day out to look at animals rather than paying entry to go to a zoo. Thank you to the Wisson-Burtons for hosting.

- Soham’s cookery competition was a triumph! Even if it was held in Dan Attles’s 1* hygiene rated shed I don’t think any rodents were harmed in the making of the dishes. Luckily I survived to see the next day too after sampling some of the “cuisine”. I am still scarred however from having to eat cold custard on one of the desserts

I always remember preparing for the rally was an exhausting time trying to get entries finished and things ready to bring on the day for the competitions, but you guys had an even bigger challenge this year as we took the rally back in hand and organised our own. You all did a fantastic job from lining up sponsors and stall holders, to the running of the competitions on the day. You should be proud of what you achieved however if I could offer some advice, next year I need a louder microphone because the event could only be improved by hearing my voice louder and clearer so no one misses out on my jokes! Thank you to everyone involved for making it such a fantastic event, particularly the

- Wisson-Burtons for hosting & Tom Wisson-Burton for chairing the committee

- Tommy Campbell

- Rachel Banks

- Dan Attle

Congratulations to Huntingdon for winning the rally- who will de-throne them next year?!

This year we have seen two county chairs, with the departure of Tom Foulger and Dan Attle stepping up to take the reins for Cambridgeshire. I’d like to thank Tom for the work he did for the county, as well as his help in organising the ball. I think we all had a great night! And thank

2

you to Dan Attle for taking over the chairmanship seamlessly. You’re doing a great job so far, your level-headed at ude I think makes you a great chair, and I know you will go on to be a great asset to the federation.

Thank you and well done to those in the background helping the county run, from memberships to events and competitions, the team put so much effort into making Cambridgeshire a great county to be a Young Farmer. Special thanks to Jess, Tommy and Gus for your work over the last year. You get things done and always with a smile so you have made this experience a pleasure. Finally, thank you to all of you for being members. I hope you get as much out of this organisation as I have over the years. I always say when people ask me about agriculture and the industry that Young Farmers is the best place to make connections with people, learn skills that will help you so much in the future- you get out what you put in so let’s make this coming year even better than the last!

Luke Abblit County President 2022 - 2023

County Chairman’s Report 2022 - 2023

3

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and thank you for being with us tonight. although I have only been chairman since may under some difficult circumstances I feel we have had a good year and have built some good foundations for the year ahead.

Even before I took over the Chairmanship from Tom Foulger, we started the year off well with our Public Speaking competition , Just a Minute which always starts with the first round or two with members not wanting to participate but by the end, we had most of the room up on stage and some of us several times which provided many laughs and somehow I was a runner up , big thank you to Soham YFC for hosting and Greg Colebrook for being our judge

November also saw Huntington YFC’s annual Sugarbeet Ball which is always a firm favourite with members and is always a good night. Pretty amazing to sell out in 3 days!

February soon rolled around and next up was the Mock Auction competition, hosted by Comberton YFC at the Banks’s family farm, it was great to see such a fantastic attendance on a crisp Sunday morning and thank you to Comberton YFC’s advisory for providing us all with a tuck shop and bacon rolls . Well done to Huntingdon YFC for the winning team and a huge thank you to Alan Faulkner from from Maxey Grounds & Co. for being our Auctioneer and also the Banks family for hosting and I’m sure if it was a real farm sale you’d of been very happy with the prices!!

February also saw the brief return for one night only of Ramsey YFC to help Soham YFC host a ‘Take me out Party with our County President Luke Abblitt don his best chat up lines to become Paddy McGuinness and see if we could match make members across the county, it was a memorable night to say the least but I’m not so sure that any romances blossomed!!

The following week saw another busy weekend for Cambridgeshire YFC with our annual Stockjudging Competition in the morning and Spring Comps in the afternoon, once again was great to see plenty of members showing what they know about the Stock on display, in the afternoon we saw members competing in Tractor and Telehandler safety, Quad bike and Gator challenges, always a firm favourite and Fence Erecting which did leave the odd professional confused! A huge thank you to the Wisson-Burtons for hosting and really making it happen and also thank you to Huntingdon YFC Advisory committee for bringing animals and helping the day run smoothly .

March soon was upon us and this sees us back at Park Farm for our Annual County Ball, overall was a good night and was great to see members old and new, thank you to all our sponsors and a massive thank you to Micheal Sly for hosting us once again.

Before we knew it April was here and I hosted a 30[th] anniversary party of Cambs YFC, a good time was had by all and I’m sure there was definitely some sore heads the next day!

4

Next up in our calendar was another firm favourite, the Soham YFC’s Welly Ball which with adverse weather a few location changes and me baling the field in the rain 2 days before, it was definitely filled with jeopardy but through it all it was a great event with the weather coming just right, it saw plenty of members attend and for the first time welly’s were very appropriate for conditions, all in all another great night.

June was soon upon us and months of planning came together for the Cambs YFC County Rally at Lattenbury Farms. It made me immensely proud to see such a high standard of entries entered by our members and you should all be so proud of yourselves! It was brilliant to see members competing against one another in the ring on the day, in the obstacle course, the cart race, the beach volley ball on a real beach and then ending the day with the floats. Once again we wheeled out our all-star County President for some brilliant commentating throughout the day, thank you Luke, for that! This year we opened our doors to the public and it was great to see some of the general public and plenty of past members to see what we get up too, this year we also saw the Vintage Tractors make an appearance and even a Steam Engine . I’d like to say a huge thank you to the trade stands that came to support us and make our rally feel more like a Show, again some good foundations being laid for future years . I’d really like to say a massive thank you to the Wisson- Burton family for hosting the rally again and their continued support to Cambs YFC . I’d also like to say another huge thank you to Tom Wisson-Burton for being Chairman of the Rally Committee and your enthusiasm for the day and encouraging the junior members . Another huge thank you to Rachel Banks alongside with Jess for sorting all of the rally comps, judges and the smooth running of the day, Also thank you, to Tommy Campbell for helping the day to come together. Another thank you also to Richard Freeman for helping set up on the days prior and for your expert commentating on the Vintage Tractors. Another big thanks is to all our Advisory, Judges, Sponsors, Stewards and the public for spending the day with us. One final thanks to is our members , without you none of this would be possible .

So the following weekend was the rally party, the first party hosted by Comberton YFC and what a great night it was, you really did it justice, another huge thank you to the Banks family again, for the use of your farm and another thank you to Comberton YFC and their Advisory for helping the night go without a hitch. It was a great honour to hand out so many trophies to some very deserving members and congratulations to Huntingdon YFC for winning the Rally, once again!

Although this did wrap up the year for Young Farmers I’d like to give a special thanks again to Tom Wisson-Burton and also to Phoebe Hannah for keeping the junior meetings going with a junior clay shoot at Lattenbury Farms which saw some impressive shooting. It’s really great to see our junior membership continue grow and you are the future of Young Farmers .

One last vote of thanks has to be to Gus Thompson for being a brilliant Vice Chairman, Tommy Campbell to being our Treasurer and helping with far more behind the scenes, to Luke Ablitt our County President for always keeping me on the straight and narrow and pushing me out of

5

my comfort zone and always being there with advice and a helping hand, and we can’t forget our amazing County Organiser Jess Shakeshaft for keeping the whole show on the road .

It’s been a pleasure to be your Vice Chairman and then Chairman for the last 6 months, not somewhere id ever think I’d ever be, it’s taken me to some great places such as the NFU Conference which was eye opening and also to the NFYFC Council Weekends working with Clubs across the country and seeing we all have the same pitfalls and successes and was great to see how far members voices go.

So, thank you all for the experience and I hope to build on the foundations which were laid this year. Thank you.

Dan Atle

County Chairman 2022/2023

## Annual Membership:

The Federation has supported a membership this year of 151 members, across 5 Young Farmers’ Clubs.

Membership numbers have increased on 2021/2022 by approximately 9%, excluding Associates.

51 (34%) Junior members (aged 10 to 16) 61 (40%) Intermediate members (aged 16 to 21) 39 (26%) Senior members (aged 21 to 28) 151 0 Associate members (aged 28 to 30) 151

80 Male (53%) 71 Female (47%) 151

## Reserves Policy:

The Trustees have reviewed the performance of the Federation investments and they decided not to invest additional funds again to ensure that sufficient monies would be readily available to cover the annual County expenditure. The general reserves held by the charity were also reviewed and were considered to be appropriate to protect the current activities of the Federation and provide future short-term funding. The Reserves Policy of the Federation is reviewed annually.

## Future Aims:

To retain and, where possible, expand upon existing membership numbers to ensure a minimum total membership aged 10 to 28, of 145 by the end of August 2023.

6

To carry on supporting and developing the five existing Clubs and facilitate increased member involvement in County Committee meetings, competitions, and events.

To continue with existing training opportunities and create new training opportunities for members, ensuring that each Club receives at least two NFYFC ‘Curve’ training module during the 2023/2024 membership year particularly as we have 1 County Training Officer.

To encourage more members to organise fundraising activities for the Federation to reduce the reliance on income generated by the Cambridgeshire County Show.

To keep raising the profile of Cambs FYFC within the wider ‘Young Farmer’ community, encouraging more membership involvement in Eastern Area and National Federation of YFC activities, including committee meetings, competitions, and training.

To further develop member participation in community/charity projects.
