Structure/Management of the Group
The Scout Group held an Annual General Meeting on the 14[th] July 2025 which consisted of the 3 Trustees, a representative from each section of the Group and a number of parents. All parents of members were invited to attend.
At the AGM each section provided a report of their activities during the previous year, the fundraising committee updated on the fundraising events which were held during the year and the Treasurer submitted a written summary of the annual accounts which were approved at the meeting.
At the AGM a new Trustee was nominated and appointed, Philip Jennings and the current Chair and the 3 other Trustees were re-elected.
Minutes of last Annual General Meeting on 15[th] July 2024 were approved and signed.
In addition to the AGM regular Leader meetings were held with the Trustees attending at which future activities were discussed.
The Group activities and objectives in the year.
The purpose of the Scout Group is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. To achieve this the Group provides an enjoyable and interesting scheme of progressive training where the members can obtain badges as a recognition of their achievements.
A Group Strategy is being developed to summarise the Davenham Scout Groups objectives and how we intend to achieve them.
Our three main objectives are to
-
Increase group membership and wider local access to Scouting not only for youth membership but more adult volunteers to run sections and support Trustees
-
Fundraise – to increase group reserves to help maintain the scouting activities and improve our financial position by the time we begin construction on the new building
-
Construct a new Centenary Scout Hall with capacity to enable local community groups to access the facilities.
The Fundraising Committee continued to deliver a fundraising plan for the year in order to generate additional income to help towards the costs involved in delivering the Scout Group activities and to build up a fund for the development of a new purpose-built building for use by the Scout Group and the wider community.
Updates from the Annual General Meeting held on the 14[th] July 2025 The Groups achievements and its performance during the financial year.
Chair’s report
The Chair welcomed the Group. The meeting was very well attended, with lots of parents/relatives/carers and children.
Registered Charity: 1029781
The chair outlined the agenda, and invited those in attendance to ask any questions, or make any comments as they felt fit. The Fundraising Committee had been working very hard throughout the year, and the events that had been laid on in terms of fundraising were outlined. The Plant Sale/Sale of Christmas trees/Beer Festival and the 2[nd] Music Festival were given special mention, and the chair invited anyone to wished to join this small group, to speak with one of the leaders or any of the committee members. Gave mention to the fact that it was only a small group and that additional help would be appreciated.
The Chair thanked all those who had helped throughout the past year, whether that be through direct section leadership, or helping in the background. The proposed new-build featured, and highlighted that there was lots of work needed, both in the short and long term. The Group Lead Volunteer handed out Volunteer Award.
A Scout leader was wished good luck in her new role in the Royal Air Force Volunteers,
New Building Update- Work is progressing on obtaining the necessary surveys and cost estimates for the new building with the intention of obtaining a cost estimate early 2025 from which the funding requirements can be obtained and a full review of the next steps in delivering the building based on the projected likelihood of fund being raised to deliver the project.
AOB
The Group Lead Volunteer led a discussion around the group being a ‘church’ group. When the Scout Group was originally set up it was supported by the Church of England financially and hence, we are officially ‘1st Davenham (Church) Scout Group’. However over recent years there has been little or no contact directly with the local church community or financial support. Since the church hall was closed ten years ago the Scout Group have had to find alternative premises to hold weekly meetings which s the reason for the pursuit of a new building on land purchased by the Scout Group 5 years ago.
It was agreed to continue with the same name for the current year but review on an annual basis. The members subscription to remain unchanged, we don’t want financial pressures to stop any young person from enjoying scouting and offer support to anyone who is having difficulty paying the subscriptions.
Scouting Sections
Scouts
Scout numbers contain to remain around 20, with a new leader joining the section. Members of Scouts attended a number of District events, including the swimming gals, Sports and Raft race as well as helping with the Scout Groups fundraising events throughout the year, in particular running stalls at the local carnival. Their support is greatly appreciated with the fundraising event as due to the small number of people in the fundraising team. In addition, the scout helped supported the Northwich 10k run manning a water station.
20 Scouts enjoyed a evening of First Aid training with a professional trainer in addition to the usual activities in preparing for the Cheshire Hike and District camp.
Cubs
Currently there are 21 cubs, 6 leaders and 2 young leaders.
Total Chief Scout Silver Awards presented since last AGM: 1
Summary:
-
Three pack overnight trips completed successfully: sleepover in November 2024, camp in April 2025 and District Camp May 2025. Planning sleepover for November 2025.
-
We have a capacity of 24, which gives us sufficient headroom to accept young people moving up from Davenham Beavers as well as external applicants.
-
Total of six leaders registered on Scouts.org.uk, plus support from Dave Bibby. To run with more than 16 Cubs requires 4 adult leaders need to be present. Since Christmas, we have run a parent rota, which makes life a lot easier for leaders
Registered Charity: 1029781
-
Young leaders are amazingly helpful; we couldn’t run the section without them!
-
But there’s one big thing we’re missing from this list. And that’s the fantastic effort made by six of our cubs at the Mid Cheshire Scouts Mini Hike in May. Of the 18 teams which took part, the two teams from Davenham finished first and second, defending our title as Mini Hike champions from 2024!
Beavers
We are operating 2 Beaver packs due to the large number of young people wishing to join the organization which has resulted in over 9 new leaders to help with the 2 packs. Since the last AGM in July 2024, we have continued to be busy Beavers! Some of the highlights.
In the Autumn Term we had a sponsored bike ride to raise funds towards our Community Scout Hall, visited Rod’s Secret Garden and took part in the Christmas Tree Festival at St Wilfrid’s Church.
In the Spring Term, we collected foreign currency and stamps to raise funds for Guide Dogs, visited Winsford Library and, thanks to two of our wonderful parents, tried jujitsu and yoga! In the Summer term we took part in The Great Northwich Pokemon Hunt, did a litter pick in Laburnum Park and, just last week, completed our Park to Park Welly Walk to raise funds for the RNLI.
Our Beavers have earned 100s of badges this year
Four Beavers earned their Chief Scouts Bronze Award this year.
We’d like to thank our Young Leaders Freddie and Sarah for their help and support. It’s great to have previous Beavers, Cubs and Scouts come back to volunteer with us
Fundraising Update
Thank you to the members of the fundraising team for leading on raising funds for the Group. As noted by the Treasurer, events have been well supported by the local community, as well as families of members. Key Events in the year were Christmas Tree’s Sales, Log Sales, Plant Sale and the Music Festival and now annual Beer Festival at the Cricket Cub. All these events have been very successful so have planned to hold the same events going forward, plus some new events. In addition, the Group had stalls at the local village Christmas Markets as well as helping out with the Rotary Club Santa Sleigh Ride around the local year.
Locally the Group have been extremely grateful for the support of the 2 Local County Councilors and the 2 local Parish Councils.
