2022-23 has been another year of out5tsnding achievements and su£ces5es for Ellzabeth House Community Centre and
HlÉhbury Vèle Bl8ckstock Trust. Despite relentless challenges placed on the organi5ation and the communityi including the
C05t of Ilving crisls and Inflatlon leading to higher runnlngcosts and reduced fundlng opportunitie5, the charitycoDtinue5 to
Erow from strength to strength.
Thls year. Elizabeth House ha5 engaged wlth more people than ever. It has extended it5 offer as 8 communlty organlsatlon
ensuring that it5 pfoErèmme is community orlented. relevant, affordable Ilree whenever p055iblel and Incluslve, and had a
successful year securing income.
Next year wlll mark the 30th anniversary of Hlghbury Vale Black5tock Trust, the charity founded to save ElliabÈth House a5 a
community space Sn 1993. Our offer ha5 evolved over the years to meet derlland5 and locHI piiaritie5. always wlth the aim
to serve those who need it the m05t. Children, young people and f8mllies have always been fundamental to the chaiittys
strategic directlon. However, our Se￿iCe5 now 8150 prlorltise other aee eroups, including some of the rn05tvulnerable
residents, and aim to address key i55ues forthe loial communlty such as social Isolation, food insecurityi physical 3nd
mental wellbeing and employment. All contributing to make lives better for local residents.
We want to keep thi5 report concise so you can appreciate the p051tive impact dÈllvered bythe essentlal serwlces, Initlatives
and events we offered Bt Elizabeth House, with the support of many volunteer5 and donors. I hope you contlnue to flnd
somethlng for you at Eliièbeth House and support our Community Centre.

The organisation Is è charitable company limitÈd by guarantee. incorporated on 2 Septetnber 1993 and registered as
ch3rity on 6 December 1993. The cornp8ny wa5 establlshed under a Memorandvm ol A550ciation which deflned the objects
and power5 of the charitable company. It IS EovernÉd under Its Artlcles of A550ciation. In the event of thÈ company belng

Recruitrnent and appolntment of trustee5
The directors of the company are also ch3rity trustees for the purposes of charity law. The trustees have developed a policy
lor the recruitment of trustees that ensures their collectlve experlence and ski115 are best able to tneet the needs of the
charity. New Tru5teÈs are appolnted by Board members.

Orgènlsatlonol Stru¢lure and Governance
The Board of Trustees is responslble for overall strHtegy and management of the organi54tion. The d3y-to-d8y management
of the charityi including Staff and flnancial matters, 45 delegated to the Dlrector, who is 5UPPOrted by a Deputy Centre
Manager, AdrNinistrHtor. Oper8tlons Officer, Community Coordinator and Senlor Youth Worker. Other employed staff and
volunteer5 fulfil other role5 in the organi5ation. The Centre Director has the functlon of Chief Executive Officer, reporting
dlrectly to the Board.
The Board of Trustees meets approxirnately every three months at Eliiabeth Hou5È. Thls year, Trustees met four time5,
Including the AGM. Meetlngs were well attended and trustees have continued to take an attive role In supportlng the staff
team.
Rlsk Assessment
The Trustees periodically undertake 8 revlew of the major ri5k5 to which the charlty Is exposed. Each year when considèrlng
the operatSn8 budget and strategic plan, the Tru5tee5 review the a550clated organlsatlonal rlsks. The 5eDior management
team also revlew operètional systems and procedures and service area rlsk assessments to manage risks that are in plate.
We revlew and update our risk a55èssments, buslne55 continuity and etnergÈncy contlngency plans annually.

At Elizabeth House. we endeavour to keep our pro8r8rDtne of activltles and 5UPPOrt varied and accesslble so a5 many local
people a5 possible can benefit.
The Food Hub supported 218 resldents wlth weekly food bags, Includlng childreni young and elderly people. Over 80 new
residents registered with the Food Hub, and 3,805 food parcels were dlstrlbuted over 12 months. Thls Is only possible with
thè hard work of more than 50 local volunteers who dedicated 2,800 hours to their communityl
In February 2023, we launched thÈ Monday Meals service whlch wlll prepare and 5hHre 60 nutrltlous, veeetarian mea15 Wlth
our communlty members each week.
At Elizabeth House, we love community eventsl They3re excellent opportunltles to bring people together. connect about
pressing i55ues over food, improve wellbeing and redutr 50cial i501ation. We were delighted to organlse 3 communltv
feast5 at which more th8n 250 people pHrticlpated.
The local greening Highbury Quadrant project wa5 developed through a partnership between1s1ington Councll and Octopus
CommunltSes to provide accèss to natuie activities for local resSdent5, through a membershlp model and with w2eklv
sesslons re8ching over 100 resldents, 5ncludiDg 25 thlldren.
Every Wednesd8Y, the Blue House Club welcomes people for chair yoga, a 2-cour5e meal 3nd a range of post-lunch activities
to get active, Spark people's Interest, stay Informed and relax. Over 50 people were registered and partlclpated regularlv.
DurinE winter, itwÈs an Ideal'warm space, for older people and weekly average attendance increased to 30 people per
session.
Our'older people. offer was boosted through the second year of the Winter Wellness project commissloned by Islington
and Camden Counclls. Our community team connected with and 5UPPOrted 550 council tenants aged 65+ provlding
e55ential information ènd slgnposting to servlces and support locally.

Children's activitles and chlldcare servlces
We launched after school enrichment activitie5 for local children so they can1È8rn and thrlve In their local Hrea. From
coding to breakdancing, yoga to our super popular tooklng club, 95 Children have learned new skllls, met yourfriends and
had fun term alterterm. These 8Ctlvities are not free. but our aSm15 to keep them inexpenslve so many children can bÈneflt
from them.

Familie5 desperately need to access affordable childcare and we worked hard to keÈp thls servlce golng despite many
challenEes.
We launched after school Ènrlthment activities for lotal children so they can lebrn and thrive their local area. Frorn

Our Holiday Playscheme provision is back to'pre-paridemic nurnbers. wlth up to 75 children 3Eed 4 to 13 attending per dav
during school holidays. 280 rhildren took part over 11 week5, tnany returnlng holi(Say after holiday. Through the Lunch
Bunch programme (Holiday and Food Programmel, we have offered many free places to vulnerable thildren. 38 children
wlth speclal needs and 8 childrèn needlng one to one 511PPQrt joined the playscheme5 throughout the year. We are proud
to be an incluslve provision, where all chlldren are supported to be able tololn In. We worked with a team of up to 17

Youth activities and tralnlng
Ellzabeth House has always been a 5pèce for young people. Ouropen-actess youth provislon ha5 grown this year with an
average of 20 young pèople attendin8 one or both weekly 5ession5. The Youth Club counted 36 regular members aged 11 to
17159% 8re boy5 ènd 41% are girlsl. Actlvities are youth-led and, in July 2022, a group went on a residential weekend, a DI
workshop wa5 delivered by professlon81 DJS and many other activlties were on offer so local young people can learn new
skllls, relax and meet other5 in a safe 8nd Inclusive envlronment.
Working tlosely wlth our pèrtner Peoples Place Community P8rtnershlp5, just over 100 students aged 16+ enrollÈd on their
21CS training and employment programme based at Elizabeth House. The small team of trainers and mentors ensured that
Students learnèd essential IT skills and increase their employability. A total of 71 IT qualificatlons were passed. 31 young
people gained expellence through work placement5 and 25'graduates' o121CS secured a better pèldlob in IT and 4 more
5tsrted an IT relatÈd apprenticeship. 88% are from backgrounds which are under-represented in thè IT sector and thi5
programme, now in Its 5th year, ha5 created an Incredible network of young professionals, ernployers, community
organlsations which can offer more opportunities to the 21CS students.

Our Impact is eviden￿ by the large and 8rowin8 number of people we reach. Our footfall thi5 year increased to 42,000 over

our local communlty.

provislons, youn8 people Bnd oldÈr residents living close to the centre. For the Food Hub, we had to define è catchment
area In 2021 which is approximately over a l-mile radiu5 around Elizabeth House. For some activitie51 people travelled from
other parts of the borough and neighbourlng ones.
Elizabeth House also offers a Space for other groups and individuals to use for theSr own activities, event5 and courses.
SOMÈ groups have been operatlnE Ht Elizabeth House for many years, but new artivStles start each year. We arÈ careful that
all services and actlvltles in the centre complement each other to offer a wide range of activities for the wider communltv.

In addltion, Elizabeth Housè has been h05tlDE many other communlty groups for one-off or regu18r 8Ctlvlties. Manv
residents from151iDgton and nelghbouring borough5 hlre our spaces for private event5. We also support local tenant5,
8ssocSation5 and other communlty eroups by providlng them space free of charge when needed.

Our community'ec05y5tem' Is growing and benefltlng more people and many Eroups. Elizabeth House is broadenlng Irs
services- golng beyond the walls of our centre- 3nd Its tearyi's reach to ensure that we do not only offer access to group
activities, but also create opportuniries which will be life changing for the people we work with.
We refer to other servlces, work in collaboration with like-mlnded organisatiOn5 to Increase our impact, find solutlons for
Individual and communlty Issues, engage wlth people who do not yet acce55 our servlces and have developed a stimulating
proeramme that t8ters for people from O to 99.
Our prlorlty for the coming flnancial year 15 to tontlnue to diversify our Income and to prioritlse fundraising so we tan
sustaln our service5, as well as pilot 3nd dÈliver new ones adapting to and caringfor our local community. We will do all we
can to keep our m05t popular servlces le.g. thildcare provision, wellbelne activities and Food Hub), but are fully aware that
we need to Identify new ways of delivering some of these service5, whlle running cost5 continue to rise a5 well a5 challenge5
for many of our community rnembers.
Through comrnunity organising (we ernploy 3 training Communlty OrEanisersl, our aim Is to find out what are the key i55ue5
affectlng people and flnd solutlons together to addre55 them. Our Community Team wlll continue to deliver a range of
servlces for some of our most vulnerable neighbour5, Our Childc8re and Youth TeHtn wlll 8150 focu5 on providlng a safe and
fun space for loc31 children and young people, so parent5 and carers c8n work, train or study, and young people learn 8nd
Another priorlty for 2023-24 will be to recruit rnore community members with Ilved experience to joln the goard, and
develop H new strategic plan for the Charity for 2024-27.
Flnallyi our centre is used every day of the year, 7 days per week, The18St renovatlon was finali5ed In early 2018, nearly 6
ye3r5 agol Elizabeth House now needs some 3ttention ès soon as sufficient funds are raised for a general refurbishrnent.
We look forward to worklnE wlth our long-term partners and new one5, including People5 Place Comrnijnlty Partnerships,
Octopus Communities and IslinEton Councll, the many local resldents who volunteer at EIIz8beth House (you are essentialll,
