Another supporter we were sad to lose was Julie Cowpland who owned the Powdermills Hotel; we attended her funeral as we endeavour to do for all our supporters. Of the four donkeys that we rescued from Greece, only one now remains, Paris, and we keep him either next door on loan or sometimes bring him back for care or treatment. He must be very old now. We have continued to have many donations of tack, mainly rugs and thank Emily Lawes for her devotion in finding ways to sell it for the charity, thus relieving Dinty particularly of the selling chore. Similarly, we regularly receive calls from the public seeking second-hand horsey equipment; again, we can refer them to Emily. Hay has also been donated however we have to buy in straw from the local farmer. Both Dinty and Tony have spent more time seeing doctors or going to hospital; a sign of the aging process but is a reminder that the future of the charity has to be thought about. We are, therefore, considering taking on at least one more trustee. There are currently about 20 equines rescued under our care. Many of our enquiries require verbal, telephone advice only. We are mindful that we should only take in animals that we can cope with. All too often we get people wanting to dump their animals on us when there is nothing wrong with the animal. One of our significant rescues involved a massive police hunt for two female bodies that had been murdered and we were asked by the police to take the horse that belonged to one of the girls. It became unsure whether the horse did belong to one of the murdered girls and the police said we were not to allow the horse to leave our premises. The incident was on national TV and, I believe, only one of the bodies was eventually found. Our p/t groom, Wendy is spending more time helping and has sorted out much of the caravan where she sleeps when she is here; a lot of items from our previous groom, Sonja, had been left behind when she went back to Germany. Dinty had regularly written articles, with photos, for the magazine, “Pegasus” but during the year they ceased trading; a pity as we had considerable positive feedback from those articles. In June we were invited to have a stall at Plumpton Agricultural College. We set up a rotational video about the charity and had many of the students visit and chat. On the 30[th] July we had a large stall, complete with Shetland ponies, at the Ashburnham village fair. This has been a successful annual event for the charity as it is a time to meet many local folk who don’t know us. Also many of our supporters take the opportunity to come and chat. We raise one or two hundred pounds by selling bric-a-brac. On the 1[st] October we had a stall at St Wilfred’s church hall, Pevensey Bay. This might seem a bit far for us but the event is free and is an opportunity to show the flag. On the 14[th] October we had a Hastings group of elderly folk visit to have a look around, a talk and tea and cakes. This was very successful. We regularly attend the Farmer’s Cluster meeting at Montague Farm once a month where they always have a speaker on subjects that help our charity; Subjects like dung beetles, wildlife and grazing.
