The year has had its problems due to the covid pandemic. However, being fairly remote on a farm we just went about our Daily chores the same as before. It wasn’t until we went into towns or visiting vets or feed merchants that we had to put on the masks and follow the 2-meter rule. We complied with Government advice and put up signs asking visitors to comply with the regulations. Being elderly, all our Trustees had their three covid vaccinations.

We ended the 2000 year with an expense of steroid injections to one of our elderly horses, Wendy. Subsequently Wendy died in her field in February.

The Festive season was just like any other working days. Holidays for most 9 to 5 workers but us volunteers just carry on without any payment and never watching the clock which often takes us into overtime. Dinty has been contributing articles to the Pegasus magazine about Brownbread’s work, with photos, but, sadly the magazine packed up during the year and we lost one of our promotional outlets. In January we had a request to take 79 horses from a failed rescue centre in Wales. The cost alone of transport made this unviable. It’s sad to see folk rescuing horses but have absolutely no plans how to keep them or even, how to raise funds to keep them.

We always need straw for bedding and we are grateful to Mark who brought 21 bales in February. Later, the Big Tepee donated 20 bales following two of their wedding evenings in August. We had a reasonable hay crop from our 5-acre and a few donations of hay throughout the year.

Our charity donation boxes continue to provide a few pounds from various shops/pubs and we provide a certificate for the amount raised to each establishment. Over the years we have had several stolen but that is not unusual in our ‘have-&-havenots’ modern society. However, we have constant phone calls from lovely people in the equestrian world who ask to donate all sorts of tack including saddle, bridles, rugs, feed, feedbins, clothing, boots, back-protectors and more. Our loyal supporter, Emily, living nearby loves to organise tack sales so she regularly collects the piles of stuff from us and, after the tack sale, brings the few hundred pounds that she has raised. She is an angel and her husband, Andy, a renowned astronomer, held a super evening here on the 12[th] August to watch the Persoid meteor shower as well as a PowerPoint presentation. It raised funds and was enjoyed by all. Similarly, we have a constant stream of phone calls asking if we have “x-sized bridle or rug or saddle”. Sometimes we have, otherwise we put them onto Emily.

The Environment Dept. has earmarked our farm within the 1 kilometre square to be researched for living species and it turns out that we have one of the highest numbers of species for any Wealden meadow farm. I was particularly surprised and impressed by the numbers of moths and bat species we have; a result of good husbandry.

The Trustees have regularly attended the Pevensey Farmers evening presentations at Montague Farm, Hankham. On most occasions Tony has had to bring his computer, extension lead and projector as the speaker was not well organised.

On the 6[th] August, one of our long-time supporters, Karen Grosvenor, invited our Trustees to lunch in Knockholt, where she lives. We had an enjoyable afternoon.

Tony continues to give his PowerPoint talks about the work of the charity to local groups, one being the Pevensey Bay WI on the 28[th] Sept.

On the 9[th] Oct, Damien, and his relations visited the Centre. Damien is a highly trained, experienced electrician and easily sorted out electrical problems at the Centre in return for some chocolate biscuits! The constant work of receiving phone calls reporting equines that may need rescuing has gone on throughout the year and we have responded appropriately. Also the similar numbers of calls requesting an equine on loan has continued in tandem. Sometimes we are able to marry-up the requests with what is available.

The charity is financially secure and we look forward to the next year helping other folk with equine problems.
