Vacant roles:

President’s Comments

Hello all,

It doesn’t seem like a year since our last AGM, but as they say time goes fast when you’re having fun. And I think this year has been fun at NSLSC, all due to our fantastic support team of managers, coaches, committee, our amazing parent helpers, and of course the main reason we exist: our Sandhoppers, Nippers, Youth and Seniors.

It’s been a busy year for competitions, with some great results, and our last comp held at Fistral, WOW, one to remember. Again, a great team effort from everyone who turned up to help, (also the cake bakers!), burger makers (the dream team), Sarah Mc for her great input to make the day a success. And once again the people we are all there for, our club teams who were fantastic.

Thank you to the out-going Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary & Treasurer for your fantastic years of service.

I am proud to be a member of NSLSC.

Love to you all

Sue Butler x

Chair’s Report

It’s an end of an era for me…. Being on the committee of Newquay has been a huge part of my life for the last 7 years. The club has evolved in that time, I’ve seen it bend and adapt with the people who make up the club. My values have always been about inclusivity and opportunity for all, which is what I’ve encouraged and supported throughout my time. At times this has been a challenge but the club always seems to find its way through.

Sandhoppers has been a favourite - it’s so fun and embodies the spirit of the club. We are also now seeing the very first Sandhoppers starting in youth, which is a huge testament of the section’s success. Elodie has been a helper from the outset, from a young age, and now as the sections Assistant Manager, it’s a proud parent moment seeing the loyalty and commitment to the club, something that is replicated by many of our young people coming through.

The Covid years with nippers on Great Western beach remain a favourite time, seeing the children and helpers get a small bit of normality and socialisation… these were such great times, despite the chaotic world around us - Rich squeezing ‘Barbie’ the 4x4 onto the beach with all the boards and watching the nipper and Sandhopper bubbles meeting weekly will remain in my memories for a long time.

Seeing the youth section grow and focus on the life saving skills with a great balance of girls and boys, bucking the normal trend is another example of inclusivity of the club. We’ve seen girls remaining in the sport - which is a testament to them and the coaching team. The section has grown and grown - with more lifeguards and lifesavers qualifying each year. And sitting poolside at a 50m competition for both nippers and youth has been inspirational - the super life saver race and rescue medley especially! Watching Jago and Rowan achieve gold and a national record for board rescue was extremely special. Also watching the commitment of the coaching team who support the young people - it’s fantastic.

The IRB racing is another highlight - awesome to watch and see our club become National Champions was phenomenal. I would love to see this again!

The annual fun days, are a firm staple in the club diary now, and it’s been great to see new energy coming into the club and the nippers participating in the sport alongside other parts of the club.

What I will take away from my experiences is the fantastic friends my family have made that will last us a lifetime. Ruth and Paul, especially, who have been unwavering support during my time along with so many others, too many to name. The club is about the community it represents- bringing people together with shared ideas and values; and we love being part of that.

The club is evolving again with so much renewed energy and enthusiasm. This will continue under the watchful eye of the new committee, and I will support as a Life member from the sidelines. My hope is that inclusivity and life saving remain at the heart of Newquay, with new members bringing energy whilst learning from those who have been around a little longer. I look forward to seeing more of our clubbies working their way through the club, taking up all the opportunities the club has to offer and perhaps eventually guarding Newquay beaches over the years to come.

No one person is bigger than the club. #teamnewquay

Competitions Manager’s Comments

2024 has been our biggest competitive season since Covid for both Still Water and Ocean Competitions.

Fifty-seven Nippers, 14 Youth and 15 Open and Masters represented the Club at County Level in the Still Water Events. A lot of the results were incomplete or missing (particularly for the Nippers) so totals have never been agreed.

We had a whopping 51 Nippers attend the Nationals Still Water Event at Cardiff International Pool. We came an amazing 7th place overall out of 29 teams, and 4th Cornish team. A small but mighty Youth team put in a strong performance and came 13th overall in the country and 5th Cornish team!

The competitions were held very late in the Spring so with no time at all we were straight back to the beach. There were lots of fun events for all sections of the Club to participate in from Max Hocking fun day for Nippers to the Twilights for the Youth and Seniors. These fun/informal events are invaluable to those that may have not competed before and gives a taste of what to expect at the Ocean Competitions. Just like last year, the summer competition season was challenging but at least our Nippers got properly wet this year at their Cornish Ocean Competition. Holywell dealt our brave and bold Nippers some seriously challenging conditions (and some rather large waves) on the Saturday, and they smashed it! Newquay Nippers placed 8th out of all Cornish teams.

The conditions for 13 of our Youth to compete in at Portreath were relatively kind compared to previous years and our Youth placed a brilliant 7th overall in the county.

Sadly, for our Seniors the Masters competition on Holywell was largely red flagged leading to no ocean events on the day. Ocean events took place later on in the season at Hayle but we had a reduced team due to some being unable to reattend.

Nationals was held for the 5th Year running in Branksome Chine in Dorset. The challenge this year was not the waves... BUT THE HEAT! The sun beat down on Branksome for the two days of the Youth Competition. It was hard to just stand in the heat, let alone compete in it but nevertheless our team of just 11 Youth came away in 14th place overall out of 26 teams! It cooled down slightly for our 37 Nippers who battled it out again on the beach and in the sea! Newquay stormed all the way to 11th place... just shy of top 10 by a tiny 20-point margin! 2025 we will hit that top 10 spot!

The final event of the Competition Calendar was the Nationals Open held on our very own beach! There is so much to say about this competition, it was the spectacle we dreamed it would be, the club united to deliver an unforgettable event and each and to every person that contributed to the success of this weekend I thank you. We had members from every section, Sandhopper, Nipper, Youth, Senior, past members, family members, all supporting to make the event such a success. Competing we had 6 of our Youth and 11 of our Seniors/Open team. Some signed up just to participate in the team events and for the opportunity to compete on our own beach! We came away joint 8th on the points table. Newquay Surf Life Saving Club all delivered such a successful event, we have been asked to host again next year!

We have had a brilliant competition season, lots of medals, PB's, team work and friendships made. Thank you to all the coaches, the support team, tube rescuers and lifeguards, the committee, and parents and carers for making the competition wheel keep turning. It really does take a team to make these events happen.

Senior Manager’s Comments

Senior’s Sessions

Having joined up as Assistant Manager last October we enjoyed a winter season in the pool. Numbers had reduced after the previous summer season but that didn't last long as all of the pool swimmer's re-emerged.

This resulted in taking quite a large team to the Master's stillwater with great success. Thanks to Russ and Rich for their coaching and we're looking forward to them both taking us through the next pool season where many want to compete again.

Moving on to the beach thankfully! Matt our Senior's Manager wanted to spend more time travelling and doing other things so I completed my Level 2 coaching and stepped in to take the beach sessions. I had to learn quickly (and still am!) but thoroughly enjoyed it.

We've now had 22 sessions this year which is fantastic given the conditions we've encountered, but whatever the ocean has thrown at us we've always had a fun and productive night often ending up with a bbq and always a beer and a social.

Numbers fluctuate but we do have a hardcore of very enthusiastic Seniors who are extremely keen to improve and train as hard as they can which resulted in taking a team to the Cornish Master's where we did very well and the Open at Fistral which is next level but fantastic to be a part of.

So moving forward we do have lots of new members joining up with ages ranging from teens up to 50s so can only see the next 12 months being a fantastic one.

Thanks, Lee .

Training for Qualifications

Matt Love, Rich Sykes, Wayne Sheppard and myself trained x 8 Surf Lifeguards, 5 Surf Lifesavers and 3 proficiency LG awards. Plus, Rich is now a qualified Trainer Assessor which is great news. I think I can say everyone bought into the training and did some incredible flip chart diagrams and drawings.

These awards have proven useful for employment, events including the Triathlon and Salcombe swim. From this year’s cohort Elodie and Oshi supporting the RNLI which is fantastic, as well as Tayler and Reen working as surf coaches.

We have a few members who have shown an interest in doing their awards this year.

Targets- Wayne to get his Trainer Assessor along with Kass and Mark Wheldon hopefully.

Thanks everyone, Paul

Youth Manager’s Comments

A great year for the Youth section where we have seen membership numbers stay at a brilliant level.

We’ve seen great competitions all the way through the year: a large contingent attended the Cornish Youth Stillwater and a mighty team competed in Cardiff at the Youth SLSGB Nationals. Across all these competitions we saw many personal bests and medals. This was all supported by many extra training sessions and a visit to Mount Kelly, to support the Youth team.

Our summer season commenced with our usual Monday nights at Fistral, which has been really well supported by a great safety team. Be it we have really felt the impact of the weather and also sewage this year, which has seen a number of sessions cancelled.

A team went to both the Cornish beach competition and again to Nationals in August and the Open in September. Where the medals and personal achievements were fantastic.

We have also seen Jack and Owen entering a number of ski events throughout the year. We also saw Oshi, Owen, and Elliot represent Cornwall - finishing off a great season.

Many of our Youth have supported our Nippers and Sandhoppers training throughout the year as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

Really great to see the support specifically for Sandhoppers, where one to one support really enhances the sessions, with Jonah, Jago, Jess, Dylan and Harper attending nearly every week at the pool. And thanks especially to Elodie who supports each week as the Sandhoppers Assistant Manager. Also, great to see Jack supporting the sections as Club Captain - specifically the Nippers and the Seniors training.

All our Youth have achieved so much this year, whether that’s competing or showing commitment each week to train and improve their surf lifesaving skills and support other sections of the club.

Nipper Manager’s Comments

It’s been another busy and successful year for the Nippers Section. We had a record number of nippers for the pool season and this led to large numbers of Nippers competing at the pool comps with over half heading to Cardiff.

After the pool season we held our awards night at Trevarrian, alongside a few games of Bingo. This was well attended by the Nippers and parents and we gave out prizes to a number of the Nippers. These included Nipper of the Year that went to Toby C, and the Competitor of the Year awards went to Elowen and Oli W. We thanked our outgoing captains, Toby and Felix and welcomed Seren and Nahla as beach captains, and Elowen and Erika as pool captains.

Kass and I ran a Level 1 coach training course pre-beach season and welcomed another group of coaches to the Nipper section ensuring we have plenty of coaches with kids in the younger age categories that will hopefully move up through the club with their kids.

We also welcomed back tuckshop thanks to Nick and Jim (and the many volunteer Nipper helpers!) The Nippers were definitely pleased about its return, and the waffles were deemed amazing!

As well as the beach competitions we have had most of the Nippers completing either their Bronze or Silver Awards. These awards pathways provide a structure to training and are great for the

Nippers to work towards, the logbooks have been especially well received by some of our newer Nippers and those less keen on the competition side of the sport.

The only downside to this year were the numerous sewage discharges meaning we had to cancel a number of beach sessions (I think it was 6 in the end). This is disappointing and really impacts on the kids training.

With our beach season almost finished the Nippers all enjoyed the return of “Super Sunday” with a cross-club fun beach comp, a huge thankyou to Kass for organising it with me again, and to the members that provided lifeguard cover. It is brilliant seeing the age groups work together from Sandhoppers to Seniors and have a great time and the BBQ afterwards was also successful. It seems the weather likes a whole club comp as that is 2/2 with perfect conditions.

Lots of the Nippers got involved with helping at the Open by baking cakes, helping stone-pick the flags course and helping with the catering (starting by 6am!). They were awesome, and hopefully watching the best competitors in the UK was inspirational.

With the return to pool coming up, we have had a large intake of Sandhoppers again, meaning numbers are increasing to over 100 Nippers. This will mean we have 9 or 10 Nippers per lane but we are coming up with ways to make this work and we have the coach numbers to make sure it is fun for all the nippers.

Thanks again to all our Nippers, Parents, Coaches and Volunteers who turn up each week and make the club what it is. You are all amazing and appreciated

Sandhopper Manager’s Comments

It's been another amazing year for NSLSC’s determined, brave and somewhat crazy Sandhoppers!

After the first saga of Waterworld's fun pool closing for winter, we started the year at the beautifully warm pool at Trevarrian. We unfortunately had to drop numbers slightly as the pool was too small to accommodate the full 16 per age category. With none of the Sandhoppers being able to touch the bottom of the pool either, we needed a lot more 1 to 1 help too, so a big shout out to all the Youth helpers who enabled this to happen, Jago, Jonah, Dylan, Harper and Jess. Thank you to anyone who stored and brought kit each week as well. All the Sandhoppers showed incredible enthusiasm and progress in the pool, in their swimming, SLS and water safety skills.

Moving onto the so-called summer, even though there were far too many cancelled water sessions due to sewage, and nowhere near enough sunshine, the Sandhoppers showed their commitment and determination with big smiles, and the skills they had learnt and practised in the pool were really evident at the beach. With everyone showing constantly increasing confidence and ability (including parents!)

Thank you to all the parents for your commitment and support again this year. We appreciate that it's not always easy to be enthusiastic about putting on a wetsuit on a grey, wet, windy Sunday morning!

We now can't wait for the new pool season to begin, (finally, after a lot of negotiation!) at Newquay Bay Resort. With a bigger pool, a shallow pool and storage!

Well done to all the Sandhoppers who have moved up to Nippers, we're super proud of you all and will miss you, you are incredible.

Thank you too, to the committee, who have, as always, been amazingly supportive and given so much time and effort to help everything run smoothly.

The management team will look for volunteers to support sessions but who supports a session/group is the decision of the section Manager. All supporting volunteers must complete the online SLSGB Safeguarding training.

The Committee will form a Safeguarding working group or Case Management Team to investigate any concerns or complaints in a confidential manner. This will be in line with SLSGB policies and guidance.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility - please get in touch if you have a concern relating to any member of the Club.

The Committee will not tolerate any behaviour that is not in line with our values. All members and parents of members are expected to be familiar with SLSGB’s Fair Play policy and the Club’s Code of Conduct to ensure that we are all treated with tolerance and respect.

Our pledge is to be the best Club we can be. All Trustees are volunteers so are not paid, we work hard to manage a growing Club by listening and responding to our members and working collaboratively with governing bodies, always with the best interests to the Club at heart.

Key offices (excluding section Managers/assistants) will be up for re-election every two years to ensure resilience in the Club but appropriate democracy and governance.
