President’s Comments

Well here we are, still in business after 65 years, so we must be doing something right! When I was looking back at the photos to make the picture board I realised just how many thousands of people, and hours given freely it has taken to get us to where we are now. I think this year we have hit a peak, we have more members, coaches, and helpers than I can remember, who are all working together, it’s great to see, also plenty of smiles all round 😊

Competitively we are doing well, with some of our members being selected to compete regionally and nationally, AMAZING, well done!

Hopefully over the winter we can sort out the Club House and Store room, it’s brilliant how much kit we have, now we need to look after it. I watched the Youth section leaving the sea, each one carrying a board, gone are the days when it was one board between six people! This is testament to our hard working committee and fundraisers, THANK YOU ALL

Love

Chairperson’s Comments

It's been a fantastic year celebrating our clubs 65th year - with beach events, some great clothing produced and a massive party!! Thank you to all those that have joined the celebrations, we have much to celebrate.

I wasn't expecting to be Chair this year, but due to circumstances out of our control Tim Hogg took the decision to step down last December. A massive thank you to Tim, big shoes to fill, but I've been grateful for his continued support and friendship. It's been great to see Tim lifeguarding Youth and supporting the Club when he can. I continue with Tim's ethos around our Club being inclusive. So it has been fantastic to see our members flourish in many ways, from Owen representing GB, a number of members representing Cornwall, to many of our Clubbies competing at all levels; to our members qualifying in all sorts of lifeguarding qualifications, allowing us to operate sessions to the highest safety standards; and to many of our members learning about lifesaving through our training sessions.

The Club continues to strive, with people wanting to join and get involved. Seeing so many volunteers helping at all our sessions is a real testament to the great culture of Newquay.

The club have successfully delivered in excess of 30 tube qualification and a great number of lifesaver and lifeguard awards… thank you to Paul and our team of TAs for delivering these.

A massive success has been the Introduction to SLS for adult members which has seen our Seniors section flourish with new faces and energy. However, it's with sadness that we say good bye to Nina who has been the Seniors Manager for many years and done an excellent job.

The Club evolves and moves and this brings some challenges but also much opportunity. The Club is very much about all its members and not any single individual - and our best moments are when we work together. This was highlighted in our 'Super Sunday' event, which saw many members gather for fun together; and I look forward to seeing further events akin to this.

The Committee continue to work so hard in the background with our support network spreading throughout the Club. Thank you to you all. I look forward to the year to come.

Holly Sykes

Chair.

Competitions Manager’s Comments

2023 was a bumper competition season for both Still Water and Ocean Competitions.

45 Nippers, 17 Youth and 14 Open and Masters represented the club at County Level in the Still Water Events. Nippers came 7[th] overall in Cornwall, Youth 6[th] and the Open and Masters 4th!

26 Nippers and 16 Youth/Open attended the Nationals Still Water Event at Cardiff International Pool.

The National Nipper competition was held very late in the Spring so with no time at all we were straight back to the beach. There were lots of fun events for all sections of the club to participate in from Max Hocking fun day for Nippers to the Twilights for the Youth and Seniors. These fun/informal events are invaluable to those that may have not competed before and gives a taste of what to expect at the Ocean Competitions.

The summer competition season was challenging to say the least, due to some big storms the sea conditions for both the Cornish Nippers and Youth meant that lots of events were cancelled on the day. Whilst this was frustrating our 29 Nippers and 13 Youth made the very best of it.

Nationals was held for the 4[th] Year running in Branksome Chine in Dorset. In keeping with the Cornish Beach competitions we were not blessed with the flat seas we had usually come to expect from the South coast. This definitely gave the Cornish teams an advantage. 22 Nippers and 13 Youth battled it out again on the beach and in the sea! Newquay Youth blew us all away and with a fairly small team in comparison to other clubs we stormed all the way to 11[th] place... I might have mentioned it before.. we beat HOLYWELL!

The Nipper team ran, swam, surfed, rescued, captured flags and relayed until they were exhausted and our fierce Nippers brought home a whopping 298 points taking the team to 14[th] overall in the country!

In the midst of what was already a very busy summer our Youth Captain Owen was selected to represent Great Britain Youth Team in the European Championships in Poland. The GB team came 5[th] overall in Europe.

4 of our Youth/Open team were chosen to represent Cornwall in the Celtic Cup and Newquay's Jas Mann was selected to be the Cornish Captain!

The final event of the Competition Calendar was the Nationals Open held on Portreath. 6 of our Youth and Open members took part. One of the team highlights was the "6 man taplin" where all our competitors took part in the relay. Our small team of 6 came away 12[th] out of 25 teams nationally! Phenomenal achievement.

We have had a brilliant competition season, lots of Medals, PB's, team work and friendships made. Thank you to all the coaches, the support team, tube rescuer's and lifeguards, the committee, and parents and carers for making the competition wheel keep turning. It really does take a team to make these events happen.

Senior Manager’s Comments

It’s been a year of ups and downs for the Senior’s section of the Club, with a lot going on behind the scenes.

We started the year with our highest number of Senior members to date, taking a strong team to the Cornish pool comps and coming 4[th] overall and ending the summer on a high, running an intro to SLS course where we welcomed 8 new people to the sport along with 8 new rescue boards to the club, thanks to a Sports England grant. In the middle there were many fun beach sessions, with long board paddles, punchy outback swims and explosive sprints training…. all topped off with some epic Fistral sunsets and a cold beer!

For myself as Manager it has come time to hang up my wetsuit, this is not a decision that I have made easily as my SLS family mean a lot to me, however I know that the connections that I have made will last forever. I’d like to thank everyone for their support, especially in navigating the tricky parts of this year and I look forward to seeing you all down on the beach in the future.

Nina

Youth Manager’s Comments

A great year for the youth section where we have seen membership numbers increase even further - we now are in the early 50+ members for this section.

We’ve seen great competitions all the way through the year. We saw a large contingent attend the Cornish Youth Stillwater and a mighty team competing in Cardiff at the Youth SLSGB Nationals. Across all these competitions we saw many personal bests and medals. This was all supported by many extra training sessions and numerous visits to Mount Kelly, to support the youth team.

Our summer season commenced with our usual Monday nights at Fistral, which has been really well supported by a great safety team.

We then took a team to both the Cornish beach competition and again to Nationals in August and the Open in September. Where the medals and personal achievements were fantastic.

Throughout the year we have also seen a number of our youth qualify in tube rescue, the lifesaver award and beach life guard qualifications.

Many of our youth have supported our Nippers and Sandhoppers training throughout the year as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

A highlight was Owen representing his country at the European Surf Life Saving competition, coming away with some medals. We also saw Oshi, Owen, Jaz and Josh represent Cornwall - finishing off a great season.

All our youth have achieved so much this year, whether that’s competing or showing commitment each week to train and improve their surf life saving skills and support other sections of the club.

Thank you to all our amazing coaches, Competitions Manager and support team who have enabled our youth to achieve so much.

Nipper Manager’s Comments

It’s been a busy and successful year for the Nippers Section. This year we moved to Newquay Leisure World (Waterworld) for our pool training. This had several benefits with the pool being 25m and the opportunity to use the diving blocks in training.

We took 45 Nippers to the Cornish Frostbite competition, more than half of our Nippers at the time! Between them, the Nippers won 4 golds and a bronze medal, and importantly had loads of fun and achieved some huge personal bests. We came 7[th] in Cornwall as a club which is a great result. After some 50m pool practice at Mount Kelly in Tavistock, many of these Nippers went on to attend the Nationals in Cardiff, a 50m pool must look enormous to some of the youngest Nippers, so to get in and swim is an achievement in itself. Again, we had a successful comp with a gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. It was great to see our older Nippers supporting the younger ones on the Saturday and some of our youth members helping on the Sunday. We also had a huge amount of parental support with parents volunteering to time keep and carrying boards around.

After the pool season we held our awards night at Trevarrian, alongside playing Bingo and an incredible raffle from Sam S. This was a very well attended event with lots of happy smiling kids and parents. Lots of prizes were awarded including Nipper of the year to Nahla, and competitors of the year to Bella and Rowan. We thanked our outgoing captains, Jago, Amelia, Tia, Jas, and Rowan and welcomed Toby and Felix as the new Nipper captains.

I ran a Level 1 coach training course pre-beach season and welcomed 5 new coaches to the Nipper section. This meant we had a great start to the summer beach season with amazing weather early on (which of course was all over by the time school holidays started!). Unfortunately, we couldn’t run tuck shop this year, which the Nippers definitely missed, but now we have a new boiler installed thanks to parents Nick, Eddie, and Jon we are hopeful tuck shop will be back next Summer.

Competition season started with Max Hocking which was well

attended and even had better weather than most previous years I can remember! It’s always a great first experience of competition for the new members and both new and old love the epic obstacle course! Again, we had a really big turnout for the Cornish beach comp at Holywell with 42 members signing up. Unfortunately, this time the weather wasn’t kind with huge seas meaning the cancellation of most of the sea events, but we still had Nippers winning a gold and bronze medal. The Nippers made the best of weekend, sticking with the difficult conditions and changing programme, and had a great time bonding and wrestling on the sand!

We took 21 Nippers to Branksome Chine for the beach Nationals. The weekend started with a group trip to the water park which was as much fun for the adults as it was for the children! However, despite me promising flat seas totally different to the Cornish Comp, it was anything but! The conditions were certainly challenging and described as “like a washing machine with waves coming from all directions!” The Nippers took it all in their stride, and there were amazing achievements from those gaining points, but also from those just managing to complete the course! One of the Branksome coaches said they would normally have cancelled training in those conditions, but I think it may actually have suited us and the other north coast Cornish clubs and we finished 14[th] club in the country and came home with a silver and a bronze medal.

We have also spent time working towards the Nipper Pathway awards and have had children completing their Bronze and Silver Awards so far. These awards pathways provide a structure to training and are great for the Nippers to work towards, the logbooks have been especially well received by some of our newer Nippers and those less keen

on the competition side of the sport. Hopefully the certificates and badges will arrive soon, and I can start giving them out.

With our beach season almost finished the Nippers all enjoyed “Super Sunday” with a cross club fun beach comp, a huge thankyou to Kass for organising it with me, and to the members that provided lifeguard cover. It was a great day and I loved seeing the different age groups work together and have a great time. Thanks also to Eddie and Newquay Boardriders for the BBQ afterwards. There are plans for this to become an annual club bonding event so hopefully we will see lots more days with all our club together from the Sandhoppers to Seniors.

We finally ended our beach sessions with a hilariously competitive, fancy dress “Last man standing” sandcastle competition, the results of which are still being argued……….!

With the return to pool coming up, we have had a large intake of Sandhoppers, meaning numbers are increasing to nearly 100 Nippers. This has meant some reorganising of the pool sessions, but hopefully we have come up with something that will work for most. I am making plans to train more Level 1 coaches over winter and have already had a healthy level of interest which is great, so hopefully we will be ready for the beach again next year.

Thanks again to all our Nippers, Parents, Coaches and Volunteers who turn up each week and make the club what it is. You are all amazing and appreciated.

Sandhopper Manager’s Comments

What a year it's been for Sandhoppers!

Our not so little section of the club is going from strength to strength. This year we had over 50 Sandhopper members on role and around 40 each week at both pool and beach sessions.

We were very proud to see the older Sandhoppers swim amazingly at the Nipper trials in September. We're very sad to see them leave Sandhoppers, but very excited for them as they start their journey through Nippers.

We now have a new cohort of tiny Sandhoppers coming through born in 2018 and 2019! Crazy! They smashed their first pool session with lots of confidence and smiles. We also have a waiting list, mainly of those born in 2017 and a list of younger children wanting to start in the summer 2024.

The board and tube skills learnt and practised in the pool last winter season were clearly evident at the beach this summer and so we are really keen to keep up practise with the beach equipment in the pool this winter, as well as improve swim skills and stamina.

Training at Trevarrian this winter isn't proving ideal, the pool is a little too small for the number of Sandhoppers and a little too late for such young children, 6-8pm. We have doubled the pool time and split into 4 groups to try to help accommodate this. Even so, we're very thankful to Trevarrian for the pool time, allowing us to continue training all year.

In all, it has been a fantastic year. The Sandhoppers continue to amaze me with their skills, courage, positivity and energy even on cold, windy, wet days (the summer!). The only negative thing I have heard any Sandhoppers say was about the lack of tuck shop on a Sunday!

I'd like to say a massive thank you to Kass, the assistant manager for all your help, to Gemma for signing everyone in and out, to our youth members, Jess, Dylan and Coby for helping in the pool and a special thanks to Elodie for being there all year, through the winter pool sessions and the Sunday summer sessions before also having to go work, and to all the parents for always being supportive, encouraging and enthusiastic, we couldn’t do it without you all.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility - please get in touch if you have a concern relating to any member of the Club.

The Committee will not tolerate any behaviour that is not in line with our values. All members and parents of members are expected to be familiar with SLSGB’s Fair Play policy and the Club’s Code of Conduct to ensure that we are all treated with tolerance and respect.

Our pledge is to be the best Club we can be. All Trustees are volunteers so are not paid, we work hard to manage a growing Club by listening and responding to our members and working collaboratively with governing bodies, always with the best interests to the Club at heart.

Key offices (excluding section Managers/assistants) will be up for re-election every two years to ensure resilience in the Club but appropriate democracy and governance.
