President’s Comments

Hello all. Welcome to our AGM as we head into our Club’s 65[th] anniversary.

In the past 35 years that I have been a part of NSLSC I’ve seen quite a few peaks and troughs. At the moment I feel like we are in a peak, our membership of all age groups is healthy, and our boat crew and lifeguards are doing a great job. Also, our many helpers and keen parents who support us throughout the year, we couldn’t be without you.

But… I wonder if we could learn from other local clubs such as Bude, Portreath, Holywell and Perranporth who’s clubhouses are always open, and seem like one big family. I know our Clubhouse is smaller and that many categories have organised their own group days, but could we all get together more often? It feels so good to go down to Fistral when our lifeguards are covering the beach at weekends, and the Club has a great atmosphere and presence, perhaps I’ll see more of you there in the future.

I know I haven’t been around as much as I would have liked to be but I’ve had quite a bit of upheaval this year. I hope to do better in the future.

Thank you again for your support of our Club

Sue Butler x

Chairperson’s Comments

I report on the main issues and developments for 2022

I have taken some time whilst on our family holiday to have a think about the last year at NSLSC. It has been a year that has seen us return to some sort of normality. Covid is still present but with the restrictions lifted we have been able to train at the beach as normal and the competition scene has been as busy as it used to be.

I have particularly enjoyed being more active in the Nippers and Youth section with the Twilight series and the Nationals at Bournemouth being my highlights of the year.

These reports always run the risk of being a copy of previous years when it comes to the thank you’s but once again I have been amazed by just how hard everyone has worked to make this Club what it is. Across the board literally thousands of volunteer hours have been put in by so many different people. From the section head coaches, to tuck shops, extra flags and sprints sessions to additional swim sessions for competitions. We have seen success at competitions across the board as well.

I want to once again take this opportunity to formally recognise the efforts of the Committee in facilitating the running of the Club. It is hugely important that we remember that every single person involved is a volunteer. They donate their own time to making a real difference to the community of Newquay and the next generation of lifesavers. For this, I am very grateful. The hours and hours of personal time that are given continue to humble me and make me very proud to be a part of this Club. Thank you all for everything that you do for the Club.

It is only right that I also recognise the time and effort that is put in by the non-Committee members, the coaches and the parent helpers. Once again, without their help and support the Club the Club would struggle to exist, let alone thrive. For all of the hours and support you give. Thank you.

Of course, with the smooth there must always come the rough. In any community Club that has a national affiliation and the rules that come with that, there is a balancing act when it comes to dealing with some of the more challenging situations that arise. Our Club is not exceptional in that we have had to make some tough decisions this year. I just want to take this opportunity to thank those members of the Committee that have gone above and beyond in those processes and to reassure you all that every decision that has been made has been in line with all available guidance and ultimately with the best interests of the Club in mind.

One of the key things we try and do on the Committee is succession planning. We want to ensure that nobody is bearing a burden that is unmanageable whilst providing consistency and quality training for our members along with stability behind the scenes. With that in mind we have made some changes around current roles to provide exactly that.

Further to that I am announcing at this early juncture, that should I remain in my role at the conclusion of this year’s AGM, this will be my final year as Chair of NSLSC. Of course, I will support the transition as a Committee member takes up the role.

As ever, I would encourage stepping forward and joining the team if you fancy the challenge; there are lots of opportunities to get involved, just talk to the section Manager of the category you’re involved with.

Tim Hogg

Chair.

Treasurer’s Comments

It has been an educating year for me in relation to the club with only being Treasurer since September last year, hence my lack of input on the WhatsApp group (sorry). I have been reading and paying attention, I promise.

In my absence I have consistently kept the accounts reconciled and up to date and make sure these are reconciled on a weekly basis. These are kept on Teams along with the bank statements should any of you wish to see at any time.

Although my son is no longer attending (much to my annoyance) I am more than happy to continue with the role and am looking forward to seeing how the club progresses/grows going forward.

Senior Manager’s Comments

This year it's has definitely felt like a bit of normality has returned to our world and along with it surf lifesaving competitions.

In April we took a team of 12 to St Ives for the Cornish still waters. We were a mixed group of experienced competitors and complete first timers. Everyone did amazingly well and we had lots of fun, collecting some hardware and placing 4th overall.

Eager to make the most of our summer we returned to the beach at the end of April and while the sea temperature may have been a little fresh it is always great to be back down in our favourite spot on Fistral.

This year we have seen some new faces join our sessions and we now have over 30 active members. Most of whom were really excited when I advertised that one of our training sessions was going to be a 'boat race'. I think that everyone was surprised and maybe a little disappointed to find out that this actually entailed pushing our 2 IRBs the full length of Fistral

and back. I'm not sure I'll get away with that again...hopefully the BBQ after made up for it though!!

Cornish twilight sessions were a great way to warm up to summer competitions, with some punchy conditions at Perranporth to get everyone in the mood.

We took a mixed experience team of 14 members to the Cornish Ocean championships at Portreath at the end of July, placing 9th overall and 6 members competed in the National Open Ocean championships in Perranporth in September where we placed 8th overall.

I'd like to share a massive well done to everyone who competed this year and also to those who have been with us for support along the way.

It has been a great year and I'm really looking forward to taking the section forward into 2023 with more training, hard work and goggle shots!!

Youth Manager’s Comments

A great year for the Youth section where we have seen membership numbers increase even further - we now are in the early 50+ members for this section.

We’ve seen competitions really get going again post Covid. With our Club Captain Josh, and Youth Captains - Elodie and Owen commencing with the National Open Stillwater in Crawley, Elodie going alone to the RLSS Speed 2022 at Ponds Forge, and Owen competing in the first of a number of ski competitions, with the Truro 10k. We then saw a large contingent attend the Cornish Youth Stillwater and the winter season was finished with a mighty team competing in Swansea at the Youth SLSGB Nationals. Across all these competitions we saw many personal bests and medals. This was all supported by many hours of extra competition training sessions and numerous visits to Mount Kelly, to support the Youth team.

Our summer season commenced with our usual Monday nights at Fistral, plus the addition of

extra flags and sprints training on a Thursday… plus an absolute highlight being the start of our Youth Tuck shop!

Owen and Josh attended the GB trials - where they performed amazingly.

We then took a team to both the Cornish beach competition and again to Nationals in August. Where the medals and personal achievements were fantastic. We saw great results on the beach and in the sea.

Our Youth have also taken part in a number of Twilight events, where they have achieved great results in some very difficult conditions.

Throughout the year we have also seen a number of our Youth qualify in tube rescue, the lifesaver award and beach life guard qualification. Taylor, Jack, Molly, Elodie, Toby and Josh have patrolled regularly on the weekends at Fistral beach alongside the RNLI and our senior members.

Many of our Youth have supported our Nippers and Sandhoppers training throughout the year as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

All our Youth have achieved so much this year, whether that’s competing or showing commitment each week to train and improve their surf lifesaving skills and support other sections of the Club.

Thank you to all our amazing coaches, Competitions Manager and support team who have enabled our Youth to achieve so much. These volunteers give hours of their time whilst also working full time.

We have commenced the 2022/23 season with Rich taking over the helm of Youth, supported by the fantastic Russ - with Ash taking on the role of Vice President and Head Coach supporting across all aspects of the Club. This is all supported by the Competitions Manager, a wider coaching team, Club/section captains, administrators to our amazing parents.

Nipper Manager’s Comments

Nippers have had another fantastic year - where the year started with lots of new members joining us along with their parents. We had a great pool season at Newquay View, post covid, where we had more consistent training in the pool.

We took a large cohort to the Cornish Comp where our Nippers were amazing. This was run without the parents poolside, so we relied very heavily on lots of volunteer support. The Nippers represented the Club brilliantly.

Many of these Nippers attended the national competition in Cardiff. The Nippers excelled themselves. Hermione and Enzo, are then Nipper Captains, came away with a gold in board

rescue, an amazing final Nipper pool comp for them. Jago and Rowan also got a gold in the board rescue and a new GB record!!!

From both competitions we came away with so many personal bests, more medals but also lots of very happy Nippers and proud parents.

Our summer season started well - being back at Fistral after two years away due to covid restrictions. This meant our amazing tuck shop was back… thank you to the Harrison family. It also meant new Nipper captains - well done to Amelia and Jago, supported by our vice captains Jas, Tia and Rowan. Being a captain, especially during the summer, meant lots of help at the end of sessions tidying away and supporting our younger Nippers.

We started the competition season with Max Hocking, a rainy day meant the event was cut short, but we all still enjoyed it.

We had a great number attend the Cornish beach comp at Portreath - where the Nippers excelled. We took many of these Nippers to the Nationals, where the competition was fantastic alongside the camping and good fun!! The nationals ended with a parade where the Nippers marched with absolute pride all in their NSLSC kit.

The weekly sessions at Fistral were always well supported, the volunteers both in and out the sea were brilliant and the Committee who supported us each week. Without you this all couldn’t happen. It was great to have Sue, our president, with us weekly, and to be joined by Russ, the youth assistant manager, who over the years has managed nearly every Club section if not all of them… the experiences they both bring is on another scale.

After 4 and half years as Nipper Manager, this summer season was my last. I have now gone on to youth where it’ll be great to see the Nippers coming up. I’ve very much enjoyed Nippers, it’s been a massive part of our family life. We’ve made so many great friends.

Now over to Sarah who I know you are supporting in the same way. We’ve worked closely together over the last year, so I’m excited to see what’s next. A huge thank you to Sarah, who has been a great help; to Sam, our new competition manager for her huge support; and to Holly for the ongoing administrative support. And a massive thanks to all the coaches, turning up each week, those doing the register, the setup, the pack down and also to the brilliant parents and guardians. Well done Nippers - I’m so proud of all you have achieved.

Sandhopper Manager’s Comments

Started in JUNE 2022 back at our spiritual home of FISTRAL BEACH.

JESS, KASS, and I ran the sessions, SUNDAYS, 2 classes, 45mins per class ending in 2[nd] week of SEPTEMBER 2022.

This year the Sandhopper’s have increased in number of memberships; however, I don’t feel it had a detrimental effect on the sessions, once again the Parents and carers have been fantastic in supporting the coaches, such as helping to get out the kit and cleaning it. We loved the tuck shop as well.

JESS collected some monies from the beach users, which is something we will continue with and expand for next year; who can refuse those kids in their Clubby gear.

This Autumn we have moved into WATER WORLD, two sessions 30 minutes each. The lessons are a mix of swimming and surf lifesaving skills.

I aim for Sandhopper’s to be fun and inclusive, concentrating on skills and confidence in and around the water.

Thanks again for all that help with Sandhopper’s and Newquay Surf lifesaving Club, I’m sure we are in for another top year.

Lifesaving Training and IRB Officer’s Comments

Autumn 2021 saw the implementation of voluntary patrols at Fistral beach. The drive behind providing this cover was through the evidence of a need to provide safety cover for the public during busy weekends in Newquay. Behind this was also the vision of having a Clubhouse open once a week through the winter for members to access the Clubhouse, not only to patrol, but to train and socialise.

To make everyone aware of what the patrol involves I have summarised the key parts. A voluntary patrol is run in a similar way to how the RNLI lifeguard the beach during the summer season. There is a patrol captain who is the senior lifeguard equivalent who runs the patrol and deals with any multiagency response to an incident. Then there are the lifeguards, first responders and lifesavers, all who can provide casualty care in the event of an incident in the sea or on the shore.

The patrol will log on with the coastguard at the start and end of each shift, and whilst patrolling will have VHF radios scanning to hear for any near by incidents that the patrol could assist with. The patrol often will have a qualified crew and helm who can respond to incidents using the inshore rescue boat (IRB), these will often be using the Club 4x4 and work along side our flagged lifeguard areas.

All members who take part in a patrol have put themselves forward in a voluntary role, and they are members who have given up many hours, not just for the patrol itself but also given the time to become qualified and remain qualified through continuous profession development.

Overview of patrol hours logged:

----- Start of picture text -----
Patrol with RNLI 344
Patrols by Patrol captains 377.5
Patrols by Lifeguards 499.5
Patrols by Lifesavers (Youth) 159
Total 1036

Throughout November to July the Club patrolled every Saturday with other patrols offered in busy holiday periods. The patrol from Easter through the summer then worked alongside the RNLI, offering support to their team where possible. This has built a strong working relationship between the lifesaving Club and the RNLI at Fistral beach.

Throughout the patrol hours members have been part of various rescues. From multiple weaver fish stings, falls in the dunes, advisories given on where to swim and surf, to the more technical rescues of swimmers caught in rips and surfers taken out to sea on surf boards. Some rescues also saw multiple agency responses where the Club has worked along side the coastguard, Newquay lifeboat and Rescue 924 helicopter.

During the joint rescue with Rescue 924 helicopter an opportunity was taken by the patrol team to build a good working relationship with 924. This saw the patrol team visit the base and were given an in depth talk and tour of the helicopter and how the asset/crew are used to complete a rescue.

Further to this we are now a reliable training asset for the 924. This training will allow the helicoptor crew to complete wet training exercises using the IRB and members as casualties.

This has been completed twice at Fistral beach and we hope to continue to offer this training for both us and 924 in the future.

The patrol is a large, exciting part of the lifesaving Club. It is where all our many hours of training both in the water and the classroom can be put into practise, it is also where key skills such as teamwork, problem solving, leadership can all be developed and used on a frequent basis.

I hope that with all this mind that members continue to show their support for this amazing opportunity, by stepping up to take roles within the patrol system at Newquay lifesaving Club, volunteering their time and supporting the future patrols in any way possible.

If you feel that you can assist in the patrol, please contact me. The patrol is always looking for volunteers in all roles, and we are also always looking for funding for lifesaving equipment such as medical bags, boat maintenance and 4x4 improvements.

Newquay Surf Life Saving Club proactively trains members to ensure we have qualified, competent, and confident support for each category; this year saw a return to face-to-face delivery to members including new Sandhoppers parents taking Tube Rescue, Youth starting their journey towards Lifeguard status, and IRB. If you’d like to hear more or get involved please let your category lead know.

Safeguarding Officer’s Comments

Newquay Surf Lifesaving Club has a moral and legal duty of care to safeguard all children and vulnerable adults involved in its activities, from harm.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding refers to the process of protecting children and vulnerable adults to provide safe and effective care. This includes all procedures designed to prevent harm to a child/vulnerable adult.

Children includes everyone under the age of 18 years old.

What is child protection?

Child protection is part of the safeguarding process, protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes the child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.

Designated Safeguarding Officer for NSLSC.

I am the designated Safeguarding Officer for Newquay Surf Lifesaving Club. This means that I am the point of contact for anyone that is concerned about a child or vulnerable adult.

I have been the Club’s designated safeguarding officer since July 2019. I currently work in the Public Protection arena and have done so for the past 15 years. I have a considerable amount of knowledge with regards to safeguarding issues. That said, I am always keen to improve on my knowledge and I frequently attend relevant courses in order to keep up to date with the latest safeguarding policies and procedures.

My role as safeguarding officer is to help ensure that children and vulnerable adults are safeguarded from any form of abuse. The role entails facilitating DBS checks, to review safeguarding policies and procedures, to co-ordinate any necessary focus groups along with the chair, and to act as a point of contact for any concerns with regards to safeguarding children/vulnerable adults from abuse.

Safeguarding issues are taken extremely seriously by the Club. Any safeguarding matter that gets reported is looked at swiftly and investigated by the Safeguarding focus group. This group was formed in 2018 and consists of a small group of select committee members.

The aim of the focus group is to discuss in detail any safeguarding issues that arise which involve individuals and where the information to be shared is considered to be sensitive and thus not appropriate to be discussed in depth within the larger forum of a full committee meeting. Having a small group of members with safeguarding experience means that the group can be convened promptly in order to discuss any safeguarding issues that have been raised, and to resolve them effectively in order to ensure that children and vulnerable adults are safeguarded. All safeguarding investigations are conducted with consultation from the SLSGB Safeguarding team.

Safeguarding is ultimately everybody’s responsibility, and if you believe that a child or vulnerable adult is at risk of being abused this must be reported as soon as possible to myself as the Safeguarding officer. If the situation requires immediate action, please contact the police on 999.

Thanks to everyone for their support with this role. Lisa Meredith.
