Thank you to Holly for her work on the fees and memberships
4 Committee reports

These minutes record the highlights from each manager, for full report please see the Annual Report

Chair – Thank you to all involved for a successful year despite a global pandemic

Treasurer – Club is in a really healthy position due to fund raising and receipt of grants. The competition aspect in the accounts looks significant where the IRB Italian event was cancelled and monies moved in/out of the account. Thank you to everyone who donated, collected money and applied for grants

Sandhopper’s Manager – Would like to look at pool swim lessons to develop confidence and model Nippers. Yasmin will be the new Assistant

Nipper’s Manager – Nippers were preparing for the Cardiff competition when the pandemic hit so a big thanks for the supportive parents for committing the additional training. Small beach groups worked really well over the summer training as nippers were able to build a relationship with their coach, this model will continue through the winter and into next summer. No sessions were cancelled in the summer, Great Western beach was ideal. Thanks to the Youth for helping, thanks to the Potter Family for the Nipper vests, and thanks to Paul Tinson for the extended loan of his trailer. Special mention for Ava Perry and family, our thoughts are with them at this time, we will do something when circumstances allow.

Senior’s Manager – core training group of Seniors through the summer, looking forward to the pool. Thanks to Selin for helping

Training and Lifeguard Development Officer – Hugely successful patrol during lockdown and through the summer, lots of engagement with the community. Thanks to everyone that made it possible. Lifeguard training was delivered just before the pandemic so no current demand, will look to run courses Jan/Feb 2021. Thanks to Charles French for the sponsorship.

Safeguarding Officer – no reported issues this year thanks to the careful planning by the Managers. DBS checks can be difficult in terms of getting sight of correct documentation but are an essential part of the safeguarding policy.

President – very pleased with how everyone in the Club pulled together during a challenging time. Really enjoyed working with the small groups of Nippers. Keep up the good work.

Lifesaving & Training Officer will have a title change to: Lifesaving and Training Lead, and have two non-committee roles in support: IRB Assistant, and Lifeguard Training Assistant which have delegated authority to stand in for the Lead in Committee meetings

Constitution agreed – additions to be made with agreement at next committee meeting JD Club House refurbishment – hot external shower would be ideal, quotes needed; consider using winter to have a clear out/up. Build Back Better grant may be useful here to make the space bigger for COVID regs.

Life membership awarded to: Paul Price, Russ O’Connor, and Ash Mann

Thank you to Penny for all her work with the Nippers over the last few years, and Claire for all the pancakes!

Formal recognition and gift for Sue for her continued dedication to the Club

Huge thank you to Nic for working so hard on the patrols, fundraising and securing sponsorship.

Committee meetings to have more focus as Manager’s reports can be provided and digested prior to the meeting.

President’s Comments

I have just had a thought back to the summer when I walked down the hill at Great Western with one of our Nipper dads. We chatted about the Club and he was surprised to know just how long we have been in existence, (a light bulb moment). I thought for my report I’ll write brief history of NSLSC. To make sure I’ve got the facts correct I’ll read through a great little booklet which was written by two of our founder members Richard Trewella (our first president) who will always be a hard act to follow) and Jeremy Miners who wrote this book to celebrate our 50[th] anniversary in 2008.

After I read it I thought too much has happened in the past 63 years it could take a whole AGM to get this story over. However, the standout thing to me is that to keep the Club going as was intended in 1958 we need members of all ages (tick), lots of helpers (tick) coaches (tick) lifeguards (tick) enthusiastic families (tick) all helped along by people who have a deep-down passion for the Club. Our ethos has always been to make the ocean safe for ourselves and other water users. So, sixty-three years on from us becoming Newquay Surf Life Saving Club I think we are ticking all the boxes. May this continue (whilst also having fun of course!)

Lots of love to you all

Chairperson’s Comments

I report on the main issues and developments for 2021

As I sit down to type this I find myself reflecting on another very strange 12 months. The spectre of Covid still hangs over us and it is likely that we will be feeling the effects of this pandemic for some time yet.

A wise lady once told me that I talk too much, So I shall endeavour to keep this brief.

That being said, what a year it has been for this Club. We have seen once again the energy and passion that is out there to make this Club something special to be a part of.

Across the board, I have been blown away by just how hard everyone has worked to bring this Club to life. From the huge gang of Sandhoppers rampaging across Great Western beach with all the helpers in tow to the Senior sections having post training BBQs it has been a real joy to see the direction the Club is headed in.

I want to once again take this opportunity to formally recognise the efforts of the committee in facilitating the running of the Club. It is hugely important that we remember that every single person involved is a volunteer. They donate their own time to making a real difference to the community of Newquay and the next generation of lifesavers. For this, I am very grateful. The hours and hours of personal time that are given continue to humble me and make me very proud to be a part of this Club. Thank you all for everything that you do for the Club.

It is only right that I also recognise the time and effort that is put in by the non-committee members, the coaches and the parent helpers. Once again, without their help and support the Club would struggle to exist, let alone thrive. For all of the hours and support you give, Thank you.

I am looking forward to the next year when hopefully some sort of normality can resume and competitions can really get going again. With the growth in numbers across the board, we will really stand out!

As ever, places on the committee are there to be filled as well as many supporting roles. I would encourage stepping forward and joining the team if you fancy the challenge!

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Newquay Surf Life Saving Club

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 30th September 2021.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act

Basis of independent examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

• to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act

have not been met or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the

accounts to be reached

Senior Manager’s Comments

With a lot of stopping and starting last winter it felt really good to be able to get back down to the beach at the start of May and it was refreshing to get back in to the swing of training together and enjoying this amazing place that we live in. Running, swimming, paddling, rock jumping, we certainly embraced the summer and enjoyed a few BBQs along the way too.

It has been great to see some new faces join our sessions, some of whom are members from old and some who have children in the club – it’s really important for me to be able to welcome everyone each week and see people supporting each other no matter their level of fitness or confidence.

There is a plethora of experience and enthusiasm in the Seniors section and it has been great to see some of our members support in other areas of the Club, from lifeguard training to being an extra pair of hands at Sandhoppers and even better that these people have then been able to go on and complete their level 2 coaching qualifications which has now more than tripled the Club’s coaching team – congratulations and thank you to those people.

With the nights drawing in we have now found ourselves back at Waterworld on Tuesday evenings and it feels really special to be able to share these sessions with Crantock club, swapping notes on session plans and maybe even having some healthy competition along the way.

Nina

Youth Manager’s Comments

We’ve had a great summer season for Youth where we’ve seen our numbers grow across the age groups. We’ve managed to train most weeks at Fistral. It was great to have BBQ evenings and other socials for the Youth.

Elodie Sykes and Cade Miller have taken on the responsibility of Youth Captains recognising their continued contribution to the Club.

Joshua Golden Clarke and Owen Pope attended a number of SLS Cornwall Twilights, with Joshua ending the summer season with a silver and bronze medal in sprint and flags at the Open Nationals championships.

We ended the season with the older Nippers transitioning to Youth. This went brilliantly with the winter season looking great. Thank you to the other Coaches and parents for supporting the season.

Ash and Russ

Nipper Manager’s Comments

We’ve had a fantastic summer season spent at Great Western, Porth and finally back to Fistral, as Covid restrictions lifted.

The parent and youth support have been fantastic, with members going above and beyond to help out. The Youth have been exceptional in their support to the Nippers.

The club have also sponsored a number of coaches to complete their qualifications, which has supported Nippers and the session delivery.

A special thank you to Newquay Town Council for funding the water bottles and to Hybryd Fit, who have continued to sponsor the section, donating funds to be able to purchase a trailer

Hermione Hogg and Enzo Bowden Inoue have taken on the role of Nipper captains in recognition of their commitment to the club.

A group of Nippers represented the Club at the Nipper Carnival at Gylly. They did fantastically well, supported by President Sue and the parents. We also took a team to the annual Max Hocking event at Hayle.

Highlights of the season was the Slip and slide and Retallack Aqua park events - which were enjoyed by all. Also our joint friendly session at Porth with Lusty SLS was fantastic and we look to do similar events going forward.

It’s been a great summer and we look forward to the coming year.

Rich, Lou and Carl

Sandhopper Manager’s Comments

Started in June 2021, at Great western Beach, plus a couple of sessions at Porth.

Selin, Elodie and I ran a 10-week session ending with a great end of summer session at Porth.

This year the Sandhopper’s have tripled in membership; however, I don’t feel it had a detrimental effect on the sessions, it certainly made it lively, parents embraced the chaos which made it both safe and enjoyable.

We have received some money from the Police, under the Proceeds Of Crime Act, which will go towards a gazebo.

This Autumn we have moved into the swimming pool, which so far has been fantastic, and I’m confident this will benefit the children when going back to the beach and their progression into Nippers.

I aim for Sandhopper’s to be fun and inclusive, concentrating on skills and confidence in and around the water.

Thanks again for all that help with Sandhopper’s and Newquay Surf lifesaving Club, I’m sure we are in for another top year.

Paul

Lifesaving Training and IRB Officer’s Comments

2021 has been a challenging year for the lifesaving training, patrolling and Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) section of the Club. With Covid-19 restrictions preventing most of our team activity in the early year a lot of momentum was lost from the summer patrolling season of 2020.

However, these sections of the Club have also taken some leaps and bounds forward in terms of sustainability and progression with members now progressing into new roles as qualified trainers and assessors. At the start of the club year I had Matt Love join as the Inshore Rescue Boat Lead and Joseph Robins undertake the lead in the delivery of lifesaving training qualifications. This has been a much-needed boost for these sections and great to see new faces delivering courses at the Club. Both these members have also achieved their SLSGB Trainer Assessor awards which will be a huge benefit to the onward success of the Club’s lifesaving and IRB training programs.

The operation and training of the inshore rescue boat has been a challenge with Covid-19 due to the close proximity of individuals due to sessions. Once all government restrictions had been released training began and we saw the delivery of both a crewman and driver course. The new addition of our Ruth Lee manikins were great for being able to undertake casualty training and will be a great addition to future training and scenarios. We have been fortunate to have access to the region inshore rescue boat for the last 12 months which aids our training and hopefully this will continue due to the numbers of members currently involved. The inshore rescue boat has aged and our engine which is now looking at turning 12 is feeling tired and in need of an overhaul, fortunately we have secured further sponsorship from Charles French solicitors and with fundraising last year we have the funds set aside to rebuild the engine this winter in prep for a successful 2022 season. Unfortunately, there has been no racing again this season, I hope to see the racing return in 2022 where we will be looking to defend our Nationals Title from 2019. In 2020 we were due to race at the world lifesaving championships however due to covid-19 this was cancelled, fortunately flights were refunded, however we had to dispute the competition, accommodation and world lifesaving package fees to obtain a refund through the credit card companies after this was continuously rejected by the organising

company. Although thanks to the help of Julia Sharland I am happy to confirm that all those members who enrolled and paid fees received a full refund at the start of this year.

Following our 2020 patrolling season I had been optimistic that our winter patrolling during the 2020/2021 season would be as strong and continue to grow, however this was hampered by Covid-19 and the issues of being in enclosed buildings and vehicles during the cold UK winters. We have provided several evening patrols throughout the summer.

This year has been challenging for all of these 3 sections of the club and I am looking forward to seeing how they progress into the winter months where we see a lot of our training undertaken. I feel I have managed with the help of many others to grow these sections and train other members to make them sustainable without relying on an individual member. Therefore, I feel it is now time for a new face to lead the lifesaving training, IRB and patrolling role to continue growing these sections with new ideas and plans.

Nic Pin

Lifesaving training this year has seen a change in format with theory being delivered via zoom whilst lockdown measures were in place. Once the restrictions were eased and we were able to be back on the beach practical lifesaving skills were the main focus.

Despite the challenge of Covid this year, these sessions have led to the awarding of three Lifeguards, three Surf Life Savers and six Tube Rescuers with level 2 First aid. As well as this the Club has seen numerous parent helper tube rescuers qualifying and full re-qualifications of lifesaving awards taking place.

All in all, a successful year and we look forward to releasing the dates of the next lifesaving courses.

Joe Robins

Safeguarding Officer’s Comments

My name is Lisa Meredith and I am the Designated Safeguarding Officer for Newquay Surf Life Saving Club. This means that I am the point of contact for anyone who is concerned about a child or young person.

I have been the Club’s designated Safeguarding Officer since July 2019. I currently work in the Public Protection arena and have done for the past 14 years. I have a vast amount of experience with regards to Safeguarding issues. That said, I am always keen to improve on my knowledge and frequently attend relevant courses in order to keep my knowledge current and up to date in order to provide the very best service for the role.

My role as Safeguarding Officer is to help ensure that children are safeguarded from any form of abuse. My role is to facilitate DBS checks, to review safeguarding policies and procedures, to co-ordinate any safeguarding focus groups along with the Chair, and to act as a point of contact for any queries or concerns with regards to safeguarding children from abuse. Safeguarding our nippers and youths from abuse is ultimately everyone’s responsibility.

The Safeguarding ‘focus group’ is still in place and was formed in 2018. This consists of a small number of select committee members. The purpose of the group is to discuss any individual safeguarding or membership issues. Having a small group of members with safeguarding experience means that the group can be convened quickly if

necessary and discuss cases in depth to ensure that prompt safeguarding measures are taken if required. Further details of this group can be found below.

We have had a number of new volunteers this year. I have applied for 16 DBS checks to date this year.

Yet again through the intricate planning by our dedicated coaches and the support of parent helpers, the summer beach sessions have been a great success. My son has certainly enjoyed the sessions that took place on Great Western Beach and at Porth.

Thank you to all, particularly our coaches for the intricate planning of each session, ensuring that our nippers and youths are safe at all times.

Lisa Meredith

Fundraising Officer’s Comments

Due to Covid, there was limited opportunity for fundraising unfortunately.

That said, we half a raffle and tombola during a fun session held on Porth beach on 29th August which raised £268.50 (including a £100 donation from a kind nipper parent).

Almost 80 members from every section of the club helped with a beach clean at Fistral on 13th August. This was organised by Surfers Against Sewage in conjunction with Board Masters and the club will receive a donation of £500 in return.
