Structure, Governance and Management

Solent u3a is part of a wider organisation under the auspices of the Third Age Trust. U3a groups can be found all over the British Isles and abroad. Each group organises itself individually and we operate under a constitution drawn up by our trustees in the past and regularly reviewed.

The Solent u3a is run by the committee, all of whom are trustees. They organise speakers for meetings, oversee the running of groups, the management of monies, the links with the Third Age Trust and the organisation of seasonal events, quizzes etc. They are led by the Chairperson, who changes every three years. Other trustees have to stand for re-election at the annual AGM, if they wish to continue after three years. This year we have co-opted a new member to the committee who will stand for election at the AGM.

Objectives and Activities

It is the aim of u3as to provide activities and friendship for people who are in the ‘third age ‘of their lives, either retired or semi-retired. The intention is to continue to learn about new ideas and skills, to continue using the skills they may have acquired previously and to do it in an enjoyable way.

Solent u3a is self supporting. Members share their skills and knowledge with other members through voluntarily running groups, sometimes in their own homes, sometimes in hired spaces. At present our u3a has such groups, covering physical activities (e.g.walking, adventure 4 Us, 10 Pin Bowling, Urban Explorers), skills based interests (e.g.crafts, card games, Mahjong, Scrabble) and cultural experiences(e.g. Opera, theatre) as well as discussion groups and book groups.

Our group also has larger meetings where members can come to listen to interesting speakers on a variety of subjects.

The overall aim, which we feel is a public benefit, is to ensure that members ‘ brains and bodies are challenged with new ideas and activities which help to keep them functioning healthily and to provide them with social interactions which help to combat the loneliness that sometimes accompanies retirement and old age.

Achievement and Performance

The number of groups that members can join has increased and for the first time in many years a trip abroad was arranged for members to the Netherlands. Also an overnighters group has started which gives members the opportunity to spend more that a day visiting places of historic and cultural interest in this country. This has increased the opportunities for members to learn new skills and have new experiences in a social setting.

Financial Review

An audited summary of income and expenditure is attached. We hold £12,708 in reserve (at the present time) to deal with unexpected expenditure and to cover any costs were we to have to close the Solent u3a. At present we do not feel there are any financial risks due to the steady annual income from membership fees and the amount in our reserve fund.

Plans for the Future

Our future aim is to continue giving people in their ‘third age’ as many opportunities as possible to make new discoveries, learn new skills and have a positive pro-active approach to aging. To this end we will encourage members, especially newcomers, to consider sharing their skills and interests with others and we hope to organise another trip abroad. Other overnight trips are being arranged for 2026.
