The Trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2025.
The financial s131ements have been prepared in accordan￿ with Ihe accounting policies set oul in note 1 to the
financial slalements and comply wilh the charitable CoMpan￿S Memorandum and Articles of Associalion, the
Companies Act 2006 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statement of Recommended Practice applicable
lo charities preparing their accounts in accordance with Ihe Finan¢ial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and

through sporl, learning, and care for the environment.

Leaside has been delivering youth focused waler based a¢livilies in Hackney for over So years, registering as
charity in 1993. During 2024-2025 we have continued lo transition beyond being a specialist paddlesports cenlre
expanding our community focus lo ensure the wider community benefits from our unique sile overlooking Ihe River
Lea, incredible facililies and range of aclivities we offer induding..

During the year, young people, families, disabled participanls, schools. volunteers, and local residents benefrted

In 2024-2025 Our programmes help people lo improve: confidene£ and self*steem, physical and mental heallh,
practical skills for work and learning. communication and leadership skills and beller understanding and take action
on environmental iSSLtes.
What we do
Youth and Community Programmes
Year round open access youth dub with 4 weekly sessions serving 250+ youlh members
Holiday programmes ran for 11 weeks oflering paddling. cycling, crafts, games, cooking and nature based
sessions.
We had 90+ young people eligible for free school meals accessing aclivities for free through the Holidays
and Food {HAF) programme.
Residenlial trip5 included a surfing on Devon Beaches, a bushcraft arKI wildlife trip lo Camerons Coltage in
the New Forest, two weeks residenlials on the Angel11 Canal Boal.
Local youth dubs and cownmunily groups regularly a￿$S subsided sessions.
Our training piogramme offered freeldiscounled Paddle UK and MIAS mountain biking courses.
Funding from GolLondon enabled LeasKle lo purchase and maintain a new fleet of bikes enabling us lo
support hundreds of local young people get out cycling including schools, youth clubs and Leaside youth
members.

School Programmes
We have a thriving priTnary and Sec￿ndary school programme with thousands of pupils taking part in on the
water and biking sessions.
In partnership wilh EcoAclive we delivered arourKI 10 Hybrid learning sessions thal combine classroom-
based environmenlal learning with water based environmental action.
We are particularly proud of growing relationships with speaalist schools including Slormont House and
Little Ilford
Open Days, Community Activities and Partnership Building
We delivered a busy programme of open days and public events in 2024-25 welcoming over 1500 local people
¢realing a stronger sense of local communily and broadening access and inclusion. These days offer paddlesports
lasler sessions. cycling and canal boal trips, community stalls, music, enviTonmenlal action, bike mainlenan¢e and
importanlty cullurally diverse food.
Love Lea Festival
In Spring 2024 Leaside helped coordinale this cross sector partnership series of events that celebrated the River
Lea, raised awareness and enabled communities lo lake enwronmenlal action to prolect our beloved River. The
festival kicked off with Leaside Spring Open Day allended by over 500 people and Hackney Mayor C2Toline
Woodley. Over 10 local organisalions hosled events including litter picks, public walks, talks and film screenings.
Paddleablllty and In¢lu$lon
In 2024125 Leaside launched the first stage of Its Paddleability programme thal bullds on the ¢enlre wide
accessibility improvements including new wheelchair accessible pontoons and EZ Dock Launcher. a stable platform
lo access the water.
To $18rt oulreach we delivered the firsl Paddleabiliiy Famity Fun day in partnership wilh HacknÈy Ark and London
Cycle Campaign (LCC) whith enabled 30 disabled children and their families lo try paddling and cycling.
Leaside Adult Paddle Club
Our Adult Paddle Club programme has weekly paddling sessions including a public paddle on Wednesday
evenings during the summer and every Sunday.
This year we hosted a series of members workshops and slrategy sessions which resulted in Ihe creallon
of a Steering Group lo help shape the dub
We have a weekly Wednesday circuit training session and Sunday yoga
Adult paddle trips included week long adventures like the Great Glen Canoe, and Scollish While Water
trips and club day trips including the Greal Ouse, and Tidal Thames Irips to name a few.
Environmental and RiverAction
Leaside is commilled lo becoming a pioneeiing community hub for environmenlal suslainabilily and river action.
The River Lea and Ihc inrJcdible local green spaces are al the heart of our work offering young people of Hackney
an opportunily lo feel they are in Ihe countryside in London. This year our actions includcd..
Supporting wide ranging river action in partnership wilh River Lea Catchment Partnership including a
citizen science water quality tesling, plaslic pollution picks and riverbank clean-ups, invasive pennywort
removal.
Our greening activitie5 by young people and community volunteers continued transfomiing our sile with
community gaidening providing biodiverstly habitats. including a pond bringing snakes, newts, rare bees
and hedgehogs.
We supported greater partnership working to prolect the River Lea. This includes with strategic partners
induding with Thames21, Environment Agency, Paddle UK. Angling Trust. CRT and Lea Valley Regional
Aulhorily as well as important community stakeholders like Save Lea Marshes. East London wate￿orkS
Park and many more.
Volunteering and Reparatlon
Around 600 people volunteered during the year on gardening. bike repairs, site mainlenance, and river
aclion. Five corporate teams (aiound 60 513ff) supported site improvements.
Hackney Youth Offendin9 Service conlinues lo use Leaside as a hub for acliwlies supporting young people
learn to repair bike repairs, improve habitats, lake on creative projects and even make jam with foraged
blackberries!

Achievemenls and performance
The tfuslees highlight three key areas of impacl during the year.
Impact 1: Youth Training and Development
The Youth Trainee Instructor Programffle that 5UPPOrted eight young people lo gain recognised qualifications in
2023-24 had a translormalional impact on Leaside's work and the young people's lives. PartlClP2nls said Ihey fell
more confident, more mature. and better prepared for v￿rk. Several gained paid work or leadership roles as a direcl
result of the programme.
Impact 2: New Leadershlp and Strong Foundations
Following the appointment of 2 new Director Bethany Summers in early 2024 she has been working dosely with the
team lo implement a range of transformational projecls designed to create more robust internal systems (HR,
finance, IT, governance), strengthen our financial position, broaden community access and bring the team 10gelher
lo create a positive culture for Leaside's work lo conlinue. This work has crealed a strong and accountable base for
future growth,
Impact 3: Strong Community Engagement
Leaside increased access lo its sile and aclivilies.. morè local residents look part in sport and volunteering including
through a new weekly Charedi women's cyding club, partnerships with schools. charities, and agencies grew
subslanlially. These efforts were recognised by Young Hackney Piojed of the Year Award for 'Leaside's Year of
Partnerships"
Publlc beneflt statement
In shaping our objectives for the year and planning ¢)ur a¢livilies. the trustees have o)nsideied the Charity
Commission's guidance on public benefit. including Ihe guidance 'public benefit: running a ¢harily (PD2). The
achievements and activities above demonstrate Ihe public benefit arising through Ihe charily's aclivities.
Our volunteers
Our activities can only happen with Ihe support of a range of able volunteers, commilted lo the ethos of Leaslde. We
offer these volunleers training lo enhance the provision that Leaside delivers to its young people and communily.
This volunleering consists of support for general activities. special needs groups. ofl-sile trips, mentoring of young
people and general upkeep and mainlenance of Ihe cenlre. These volunteers have conlribuled hundreds of hours of
support for which we are extremely grateful. Volunteers are supporled with professional development relevant to the
activities provided at Leaside.
Financial revlew
The Slalement of Financial Aclivilies showed a nel deficit for the year of £50,718 (2024 - £28,878> and lolal
reserves sland al £618.460 (2024 £669,178). The financial position at the end of the year revealed by the Balance
Sheet, shows net current assets or working capital of £48,088 {2024 - £90,871). The nel book value of fixed assels
held incllrding land and buildings, all of which are used directly for charilable purposes, amounted to £572,675
<2024 - £584,574).

The Irlrslees consider it prudent to maintain an adequate level ol unreslricted reseNes lo cover the community
cenlre's contractual commilrllenls and provide sufficienl working capital and have set this at minimum of Iwo months
operalional costs. The trustees are endeavoring lo increase Ihe level of rese￿e$ in next year.
As al the year-end the financial stalemenls showed reseNes of £618.460 (2024 - £669,178), of which £356,875
<2024 £388,829) were restricted funds and £261,585 (2024 - £280,349) were unrestricted funds. The unreslr¢cted
funds not designated or invested in tangible fixed assets held by Ihe charity are of £46,827 {2024 - £85.5581.

Structure, governance and management
Governlng doGument
The Leaside Trusl is a company limited by guaranlee and not having a capilal divided by shares.
The company was incorporaled on 61h October 1993 and is a registered charily conslituled as a Limiled Company
under the Memorandum and Articles of Associalion. The charity registration number Is 1027645 and Iho company
registration number is 02859615.
Recruitment and appointment of trustees
In recruiting and appointing new Iruslees, Ihe Board considers the mix of skills and experience required, for
example exparience in the education seclor, business skills. legal expertise, financial knowledge, personal
involvement in Leaside's work.
The Board has been reviewing ils mix ol skills and is looking lo reciuils to fill gaps. The minimum number of truslees
is ￿0.. there is no maximum number.
Trustse inductlon and training
Thc Board has prepared a truslees induclion pack lo ensure ihal all new Iruslees quickly become familiar wilh the
Charity and ils work. and with the responsibilities of their roFe. The Iruslees undertake periodic reviews ol Iheir
training needs.
Organisation
The Board meets al least four times a year and individual trustees do addilional work between Board meetings by
taking responsibility for pariicular areas of the Board's work. These include aclivilies and programmes,
communications and marketing. finanGe, fundraising, personnel. policies and procedures and premises.
The Chief Execulive, who is appointed by the trustees. manages the day-1041ay operations of Ihe charity under
delegated powers approved by Ihe Irustees.
The Chief Executive has a small team of permanenl and sessional staff. and the charity is extensively supported by
volunteers.
Related parties
During Ihe year there were no related party Iransactions.
Risk management
The Board has a range of detailed policies designed to address the major risk areas to which the charily is exposed.
These include Health & safety on water activities. Stafflvolunteer safeguarding. Financial suslainabilily and funding
risks, Opeialional risks (equipment, wealher. environmenlal hazards). all of whith are reviewed regularty.

I report to the Trustees on my examination of the financial statemen15 of The Leaside Trust (Ihe charitable company)
for the year ended 31 Marth 2025.
Responsibilities and basls of report
As the Trustees of Ihe charitable company (and also ils directors for the purposes of company law) you are
responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with Ihè rquiremenls of the Companies
Act 2006 (the 2006 Act).
Having satisfied myself that the financial slalemenls of Ihe charitable company are nol required to be audited under
Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independenl examination, I report in respect of my examination of the
charitable company's financial slalements carried oul under seclion 145 of the Charities Act 2011 {the 2011 AGt). In
carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Cornmission under

The statement of financial activilies includes all gains and Sosses recognised in the year.
The deficit of £50,718 is largely allribulable to non-cash expendilure in respect of depreciation of fixed assets
amounling lo £65,257. Exduding Ihis non-cash charge, the charity's financial activities refEecl a surplus. indicating
sustainable financial performance from ils core aclivilies.
All income and expenditure derive from continuing aclivities.
The slalement of financial aclivilies also complies with the requirements for an income and expenditure account
under Ihe Companies Act 2006.

Accounting policies
1.1 Accounting convention
The financial slatemenls have been prepared in accordan￿ wilh the charitable company's Memorandum and
Articles of Association. the Companies Acl 20￿. FRS 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in
the UK and Republic of Ireland" C'FRS 102) and the Charities SORP"Accounting and Reporting by Charilie5'.
Statement of Recommended Practice applicable lo charities preparing their accounts in accordance wilh the
Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland {FRS 102)" (effeclive 1 Januaiy
2019). The charilable company is a Public Benefit Entily as defined by FRS 102.
The charitable company has taken advantage of the prowsions in the SORP for charilies not lo prepare a
Stalemenl of Cash Flows.
The financial statements are prepared in slerling, which is the functional currency of the charitable company.
Monetary amounts in these financial slalemenls are rounded to the nearest £.
The financial slalements have been prepared under Ihe historical cosl convention. The principal accounting
policies adopied are set oul below.
1.2 Going Concern
The charily's financial statements show a net deficit of £50,718 (2024 - £28,878) foi Ihe year and free
reserves of £46,827 {2024 - £85,558) as al Ihe year end. The truslees are of Ihe view Ihat these resulls have
secured the immediale future of the charily for the next 12 to 18 months and on this basis the charity is a
going concern.
1.3 Charltable funds
Unreslricled funds are available for use al Ihe dls¢relion of the Trustees in furtheran￿ of Iheir charitable
objectives.
Reslricled funds are subjecl to specific conditions by donors as lo how they may be used. The purposes and
ses of Ihe restricted funds are sel oul in the notes lo the financial slalemenls.
1.4 Income
All income is included in the slalemenl of financial activities when Ihe charity is legally entitled to it, receipt 1$
probable and the amount can be measured wilh sufficienl reliabilily.
Grant income
Grants are credited lo the slalemenl of financial aclivilies when the charity is enlilled to the funds. Income Is
only deferred where there are ts'me conslrainls imposed by the donor or if Ihe funding is perfomiance related.
Where enlillement to grants receivable is dependenl upon fulfilmenl of condilions within the charity's control,
Ihe income is recognised when there is sufficient evidence that conditions will be met.
Grants supporting the core activities of the charily and wilh no specific restrictions placed upon their use are
included within donations and legacies. Grants that have spectfic restrictions pla￿d upon their use are
included wilhin income from charitable activities.
Capital grants for the puichase of fixed assets are credited to restricled incoming resources on the eailier dale
of when they are received 01 re￿1Vable. Deprecation on the relaled fixed assets is charged against the
reslricled fund.
Donations and legacies
Donations are recognised in the peiiod in which they are re￿ived. Legacy income is recognised vthen the

Contract income
Income Irom charilable activities include income recognised as eamed (as the related goods and services are
provided) under contiacl.
Room hire and servlce change income
Room hire and service charge income are L¥edited lo income in Ihe year in which Ihey are re￿[vable.
1.5 Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or cnnslTuclive obligalion to transfer economic benefit lo a
third party. it is probable that a Iransfer of economic benefits will be required in seltlemenl, and the amounl of
the obligation can be measured reliably.
Expenditure is classif18d by aclivily. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and
shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each acliwly. Direct costs allributable lo a single
activity a￿ allocaled direclly lo Ihal aclivily. Shared costs which conlribule to more than one activity and
SLJPPOrt costs which are not allribulable lo a single aclivily are apportioned between those aclivilies on 2 basis
consislenl with Ihe use of resources. Central slaff cnsts are allocaled on the basis of lime spent, and
depreciation charges are allocated on the porlion of the asset's use.
Allocatlon of support costs
Support cosls are those functions that assist Ihe work of Ihe charity but do not directly underiake charitable
activities. Support costs include back office costs, finance, personnel. payroll and governance costs which
support the charity's programmes and activilies. These costs have been allocaled belween cost of raisin'g
funds and expendilure on ¢harilable aclivilies. All Ihe general support and governance costs have been
apportioned to the various charitable aclivities on the basis of staff lime allocated lo each aclivily.
1.6 Tangible fixed assets
Tangible fixed assets are inilially measured at cost and subsequently measured al cost or valualion, nel of
depreciation and any impairment losses.
Individual lixed assets cosling £500 or more are capilalized al cosl. Deprecialion is provided al rates
calculated lo write off Ihe cosl or valuation of fixed assels, less their estimated residual value. over their

1.7 Cash and cash equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held al call with banks, olher short-lerm liquid
investments with original matuiilies of three months or less. and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts ale shown
within borrowings in currenl liabililies.
1.8 Financial instruments
The charitable company has elected lo apply the provisions of Section 11 'Basic Financial Instrumenls, and
Seclion 12 '01her Financial Instruments Issues, of FRS 102 to all of ils financial instfumenls.
Financi31 instruments are recognised in the charilable company's balance sheel when the charitable company
becomes parly lo the contractual provision5 of the instrument.
Financial assets and liabilities are offset. with Ihe nel amounts presented in the financial slalemenls. when
there is a legally enforceable light lo sel off the reccrfJnised amounts and there is an inlenlion lo settle on a net
basis or to reali5e Ihe asset and settle Ihe liability simLJllaneously.

1.9 Taxation
The charity is a registered charity and, therefore, is not liable for Income Tax or Corporation Tax on income
derived from ils charilable activities, as il falls within the various exemptions available to registered charilies.
1.10 Creditors and provisions
Provisions are recognised when the charitable company has a legal or constructive present obligation as a
result of a past event, it is probable that the charitable company will be required to sellle thal obligation and a
reliable eslimale can be made of the amounl of Ihe obligation.
The amount recognised as a provision is the besl estimate of the consideration required lo sellle Ihe presenl
obligation al Ihe reporting end dale, laking inlo account Ihe risks and uncertainties surrounding the obligation.
Where the effecl of the time value of money is material, the amount expected to be required lo settle the
obligalion is recognised at present value. ￿en a provision is measured al present value. the unwinding of
the discount is recognised as a finance cost in nel incomel{expendilure) in the p8riod in which il arises.
1.11 Debtors
Trade and other deblors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered.
Prepayments are valued al the amounl prepaid nel of any trade discounts due.
1.12 Pension
The charity operates 2 defined contribution pension scheme. The assets of the scheme are held separately
from Ihose of Ihe company in an independenlty administered fund. The pension cost charge represents
contributions payable by the Gharily lo the fund. The charity has no liability under the scheme olh8f than for
the payment of those contributions.
1.13 Volunteers and donated services and facilities
Donated professional se￿l¢eS and donated facililies are recognised a5 income when the charity has conlrol
over the item, any conditions associated with the donated ilem have been met, the receipt of economic benefit
from the use by Ihe charily of the item is probable and that economic benefit can be measured reliably. In
accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102), Ihe general volunleer lime is nol recognised and refers to the
trustees, annual reporl (or more informalion about their Contribution.
On re￿ipt, donated professional services and donaled facilities are recognised on Ihe basis of Ihe value of
the gift lo Ihe cliarity which is the amount the chanly would have been willing lo pay to obtain Se￿l¢eS or
facilities of equivalent economic benefit on the open market: a corresponding amounl is then recognised in
expenditure in the per50d of receipt.
Critical accounting estimates and judgements
In the application of the charitable company's accounting policies. the Tnjstees are required lo make
judgements. eslimates and assumptions about the carying amount of assets and liabililies that are not readily
apparent from other sources. The estimates and associaled assumplions are based on historical experience
and other factors Ihat are Considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from Ihese eslimales.
The eslimales and undertying assumplions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounling
eslimales are recognised in the period in which the estimale is revised where the revision affects only that
period, or in the period of Ihe revision and future periods where ihe rewsion affecls both current and future
periods.
