Introduction
Welcome to the 2023 AGM of the Orton Wistow Community Association – the first year in a few where we have not had any impact from the COVID19 pandemic and the centre has had a stable and healthy year. This report covers the period from April 2022 to March 2023.
User Groups
We had said farewell to one of our church groups this year – the Christian Community Church no longer use the centre on a Sunday but they do continue to use the hall for choir practice. This has allowed us to hire the hall to another church for a few hours each Sunday morning and leaves us the afternoon free for one-off hirers.
The community hall remains popular for parties at weekends and we are seeing high usage. We get more queries than we can accommodate – unfortunately we still have to chase people for deposits and information to guarantee their booking. Changing the policy to avoid late night hires has worked well and in general the hall is being looked after when used.
We have had several returnee hirers – including for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day again this year. The hall remains popular for young local children’s birthday parties. The Under5’s have been able to hold fetes again this year – the committee decided to waive any fees for these fundraising exercises.
Renovations
The floor in the children’s bathroom has been replaced but the quest for reliable tradespeople remains to complete the project. We are often let down by people booking time to quote and then not showing up.
The garden continues to be maintained and the under5s have repainted their sheds and added some equipment to the garden. The microwave has been replaced.
Our plans for the upcoming year include a replacement programme for the chairs, CCTV, some painting and a commitment to look into a defibrillator to be housed inside the hall.
Volunteers
I would like to thank Tracy, Sury and Linda for continuing in their roles so wonderfully. The place would not be able to run without them giving so much of their time in the background. We are still missing a Vice Chair and ideally need to recruit into this position in the upcoming year. A special thank you as well to Darren, our maintenance expert, who fixes the items we are responsible for and arranges qualified tradespersons if required.
Asset Transfer

As per our position set out in last year’s AGM, the process has not progressed. It continues to remain in our interest to maintain the status quo. This is because the Council continues to cover the cost of major repairs and maintenance, and fire regulations. Post transfer, this will become the responsibility of the association.
Summary:
To conclude, we’ve had a successful year at the association and the bank balance remains healthy. I would like to thank our regular users for looking after the hall when it’s in their care and for continuing to use the hall. The hall is a big asset to the community here in Orton and we could not keep it functioning without everyone’s help.
