Trustees Annual Report for the year ended 31 August 2020.
It has been an unusual twelve months for Argyle Pre School Nursery. The nursery has continued to run smoothly and efficiently despite the worldwide issue of Corona virus and even stayed open for the children of key workers during the first lockdown. The nursery relied on the Staffordshire County Council funding to see them through the first lockdown and didn’t claim any job retention scheme grants as virtually everything was covered by public funding already received. Staff did work fewer hours over the lockdown period but all staff were retained. The smooth operation of the nursery is due to the continuing commitment of hard work from management and all staff.
Whilst the income has fallen very slightly, overall it’s actually been fairly similar to last year in total. This has mainly been due to less fees paid by parents but more funding has been received from Staffordshire County Council. Overall expenses have also fallen as well and overall there has still been an increase in funds this year which can be seen by an increase in closing bank balance from the 31.8.19 year end to the 31.8.20 year. Most expenses have either been very consistent compared to the previous year or some including salary costs have fallen slightly due to less hours worked during the first lockdown. The monthly rent remains the same over this year and last year and utility bills have also been fairly consistent but increased fractionally. Telephone and internet costs have increased though. Overall with costs having fallen slightly more than the fall in income, this has led to the surplus for the 31.8.20 year end.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff for their continuing support and dedication they give, without them the nursery would not be as it is today without them.
We have had a small number of staff changes during the year but generally speaking, it has been a good, stable and reliable staff base.
This brings my report to an end and I would like to again thank everyone for their continuing support of the nursery ~ Our staff, committee and families who work hard to ensure this nursery continues to be such an enjoyable experience for all of our children.
Statement of trustees' responsibilities
Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which show a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and its financial activities for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:
-
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
-
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operational existence.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
Independent Examiner
The trustees intend to ask the existing accountants to undertake the independent examination of the charity in the following year.
Signed on behalf of the trustees

Independent examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Argyle Pre-School
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2020, which is set out on the following page.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Act); and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of the independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts represent a “true and fair” view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements: • to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act;
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
