## **Chairman’s Report 2025**

We are very lucky to have a roster of Leaders and volunteers of Bere Regis Scout Group that there has been such a programme of events during the last year including our 1st Group Scout Camp to Snowdon since COVID which was a resounding success despite some up’s and down’s!

The group continues to provide a wealth of opportunities each week in a programme of events and activities for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers, which enable our young people to learn how to have fun while learning to work with others and develop a range of new skills, increasing their confidence so that they can eventually make their own contributions and maybe solve some of the problems we have not been able to. More on this from Emma our GSL in her report.

With the changes within the hierarchy of the Scout Group, Ian Ventham worked solidly to produce our new constitution. In brief, we now have three tiers of organisation within the group. At the highest level we have the 5 members of the Trustee Board who oversee the governance of the Group. Next we have the Delivery Team which replaces the Executive team. As the name suggests, they enable the Leader Team to deliver the fantastic array of activities and programs throughout the year. At the coalface and the most important is our Leader Team who turn out every week to deliver the program to your youngsters.

Peter Wells and others have produced our Risk Register for the Group which was no mean feat!

Fundraising is an important focus for the group – despite some challenges this year, we are very lucky to have the Black Hill run which provides a significant income to the group. This year has seen other opportunities for fundraising re-invigorated, with the Big Bere Breakfast proving as success. A huge thanks goes out to the breakfast volunteers! This mantle has now been passed on to the Nepal Breakfast team who will continue to provide a valuable community event while raising much needed funds for their trip in 2027. We also held a very successful Curry and Race Night in March with a lot of help from the Whitfield Family and we’ve got the annual duck race in July and the Black Hill Run in September to finish off our fundraising for this year.

The group have also been successful in securing funding from the Parish Council to replace the rear steps at the hut and to enable us to install a dishwasher and hotplate into the kitchen. A massive thank you must go out to our QM Martin Debenham who provided the practical expertise to repair and replace these changes.

Now onto the most exciting news – Our youngsters are off to Nepal in 2027! What an amazing opportunity for the kids and what an opportunity for you parents to get involved in all the fundraising activities we’ll be holding over the coming years for both the Nepal Trip and of course closer to home our general group fundraising to subsidise the fantastic activities we do throughout the year! We’ve got the Duck Race in July, Black Hill Run in September and possibly another Curry and Race Night in darkest depths of winter! All these

events cannot run without support from you parents! Of course, if you’ve got any other ideas please bring them to the table.

The group is fortunate to have Emma as group scout leader and she continues to do a fantastic job along with our current leadership team and the future of the group looks very bright. However, whilst we are reasonably strong in our delivery team roles at present, these jobs do turn over and we need to attract more people to help all the time. For instance, in the background we badly need an Honorary Secretary, and someone to fill a vital Trustee position. We could do with more help with our kit, and keeping the hut in good shape. Working more closely with the kids, we could really do with more help in Beavers and Scout sections, not necessarily as uniformed leaders but as regular helpers.

In my head I can hear your groans as I write this! "We are just too busy", "my new job is too demanding", "it's a relief to hand the kids over, so we can get a bit of me-time".

Of course, if everyone said this and didn't offer help there would be no Scout Group for your children nor for the other 87 youngsters in the Group.

Please think hard about making even a modest time commitment. Your own children and all the others would appreciate it immensely, and, you never know, you might find it's fun, rewarding, challenging, and vastly more enjoyable than you ever imagined!

We also continue to participate in discussions with the parish council about the plans for the development of the village hall. At present this is gone a little quiet but we must not rest on our laurels!

We have a few “thank you’s” to those of you who are leaving our Group!

Gillian Brindle has stood down after many years on the Executive Committee. We also say goodbye to Catherine Smith who has been our Secretary for many years. Finally Pat Hall, former Leader, who has been our Group President, has decided to step down to concentrate on her growing family of grandkids and now great grandkids! We owe them huge thanks for all the time they served for Bere Regis Scout Group.
