The pre-school is a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity that serves Stonebroom and its surrounding villages by delivering high quality, local and cost effective educational childcare to 2, 3 and 4 year olds. The pre-school has adopted the Early Years Alliance Model Constitution. The employed staff are supported by a voluntary management committee comprised of parents and other interested parties. We currently offer pre-school care in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage, with funded and non-funded places available to 2 – 4 year olds. We offer three hour sessions in the morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday in term-time. ## **Achievements and Performance** 2022 marked the 50[th] anniversary of Stonebroom Pre-School, and following the significant effect of Covid-19, the focus of the 2021-2022 academic year was upon returning to normal service, to maximise the benefit of the preschool to all those involved with it. While we persisted with increased cleaning and strict illness protocols to continue to guard against any outbreaks of infection, we determined to re-establish many of our events and procedures from prior to the pandemic, and fully reconnect with our parents, carers and the wider community. While child occupancy levels remained subdued during the early part of the year, they increased over the proceeding months as parents and carers became more comfortable with, and were able to return to, their customary routines. In February, our Manager Faye departed due to a family relocation, with the thanks of everyone involved with the pre-school for the time she was with us. Assistant Manager Barbara once more agreed to act up to the Manager role until a new permanent Manager could be appointed. The trustees would once again like to place on record their gratitude to Barbara for her hard work and commitment during her tenure as Manager. Barbara’s dedication to the pre-school over several years now has been the primary catalyst for both its survival and success, and we are very grateful for all of her effort and sacrifice. We would also like to thank Pre-School Practitioners Mary and Stacey, who stepped up to Acting Assistant Manager roles to support Barbara during this time, and indeed all of the staff, who have as ever been dedicated, professional and a credit to the setting. They have continued maintaining and improving their skills through training, as well as becoming fully conversant with and enacting the new EYFS framework. We continued to improve the setting throughout the year, with the trustees and staff comprehensively redecorating the interior and exterior environment, and having new energy-efficient lighting fitted inside the building. Our fundraising and community event calendar was able to fully resume, and we held a successful Halloween event, Christmas performance, Easter bonnet parade, sports day and graduation ceremony, along with our annual school trip to White Post Farm. We also re-introduced our very popular Christmas Fair fundraiser, but the crowning glory of this year’s events calendar was a special 50[th] anniversary summer fair held at the pre-school in June, to which we invited current and former children, parents, carers, staff, trustees and the entire local area. This was a huge success, not only raising a considerable sum for the pre-school, but also helping us to re-engage with the community following the difficulty and isolation of the last two years. Financially, the diminished child numbers in the early part of the year combined with well-documented rising energy, food, staff and other costs meant that despite careful monetary control and increased fundraising revenue we made a loss of £5689.59. However, our reserves remain healthy thanks to the diligence and profitability of previous years. Therefore, following our pre-planned fee increase in September 2021, our fees remained frozen throughout the rest of the year, in order that we might stay as affordable as possible for the local families we serve. We continue to be one of the very lowest cost providers in the local area, at significantly lower cost than many local commercial operators. In conclusion, the trustees feel that despite the continuation of a very difficult period for the early years childcare industry as a whole, the pre-school once again met its aims and objectives and continues to be a great asset to the local community. ## **Aims and Objectives** We aim to continue delivering a comprehensive, high quality early years education to all of our children, offering a choice of activities appropriate to their ages and stages of development. We will maintain our focus on individuality, progression, and care. We aim to encourage parental involvement from the outset, for the benefit of the children and pre-school alike. We look forward to appointing a new permanent Manager, and hope to attract greater numbers of children back to the pre-school as we continue to re-establish ourselves following the pandemic, and aim to return to economic profitability. It is also crucial to recruit new parents and carers to secure long term stability with regard to our voluntary committee of trustees.
