INTRODUCTION
In the UnitedKingdom,around18,000peopledie fromcoloncancereveryyear.Manyof thosedeathscouldbe preventedif problems
weredetectedearlier.Peopleover50 and anyonewitha historyofcoloncancerin the family,whoexperiencechangesin their bowel
habit,areparticularlyatrisk.GUTSwassetup in 1983withthestatedpurposeofimprovingtheearlydetectionofbowelcancer. The
charityestablishedone of the very first mass screeningprogrammesfor bowelcancer,workingwith GP practicesin Surrey,West Sussex
andHampshire.In2006theNationalBowelCancerScreeningProgrammewassetupand,withtheactiveandfinancialsupport of
GUTS, the centre for the South of Englandwas based in Guildford.This programmecurrentlyoffersscreeningto everyonebetween the
ages of 60 and 74.For thoseoutsidethis age range,GUTScontinuesto advisefamiliesand othersat risk,throughits Colorectal Cancer
Family Clinic.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
The formal objectives of GUTS are:
"thepreservationandprotectionofgoodhealthbyscreeningandundertakingorassistingintheundertakingofresearchforthe early
detection and treatment of cancer and other diseases of the digestive system and the publication of the useful results of such research."
Towards these objectives, GUTS currently is:
- Continuingtoofferscreeningtopeopleovertheageof50,livinginthelocalarea,whohavebeenidentifiedbytheirGPasbeing at
increased risk of developing bowel cancer.
- MaintainingtheweeklyColorectalFamilyCancerClinicwhichofferscounsellingandscreeningregimesforpeopleat moderate/high
risk of developing bowel cancer by virtue of a strong family history.
- Supportingclinicaland researchprojectswhere the researchers'areas of interestfurtherthe objectsof the charity.During this period
grants were provided for a study.
- Donating appropriate medical equipment as and when the need arises and alternative sources of funding are not readily available.
The Trusteesconfirmthat they have referredto the guidancecontainedin the CharityCommission'sgeneralguidanceon public benefit
when reviewing the Trust's aims and objectives and in planning future activities and setting the grant making policies for the year.
ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Colorectal Cancer Family Clinic
The GUTS ColorectalFamily clinic continuesto provideadvice to individualswith a family historyof bowel cancer,using national referral
guidelinesapprovedbythesurgeonsandgastroenterologistsattheRoyalSurreyCountyHospital,Thoseatloworlow/moderate risk
receivewrittenadviceabouttheir levelof risk and our recommendationsfor futurescreening.Thoseat high/moderateor high risk are
offeredanappointmentintheClinicforriskassessment,counsellingandscreening.Genetictestingisalsomadeavailableto identify
inherited conditions within families that can carry an especially high risk of developing colorectal cancers.
Supporting Research
PapillonColorectalDatabase:GUTSisworkingwiththecharityBrightonthisproject,providinga.6fundingforadatabase manager.
Theaimis tobuilda centralbankofinformationbasedonpatientexperience(PROMS).Althoughthestudyoriginallyconcentrated on
peopletreatedwithPapillonradiotherapyithassincebeenwidenedtoincludeotherbowelcancerpatients.Theintentionis that
eventuallyit willprovidea portalfor currentpatientsto accessinformationand adviceregardingtheir treatmentand self-management
ofsymptomsandside-affects.Duringthisperiod,Trusteesagreedfurtherfundingforacomputerscientisttoworkonredesigning the
structure of the database, in order to bring the project forward to its next stage.
R-FITStudy:GUTSapprovedfinancialsupportforthisproject,beingundertakenbyMrNickFarkasworkingwithcolleaguesat the
SouthernBowel Cancer ScreeningHub. The purpose of the study is to determinethe effectivenessof repeated FIT tests for symptomatic
patients.Ifthisenablessafetriagingofsuchpatients,hardpressedcolonoscopyservicescanthenbe usedmoreeffectively.(FITis the
standard test used for screening the general population via the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
This period of activitywas adverselyaffectedby the coronavirus pandemicand the consequentiallimits to public gatheringsthat meant
manyofourusualfundraisingeventscouldnotbeheld,withsomecancelledatshortnotice.Thisobviouslyhadanimpacton the
charity'sincome generation.Some outdoorevents were held, includingMidsummerJazz in the Park on the LoseleyEstate and the GUTS
Motor Tour.
INVESTMENT POLICY AND PERFORMANCE ACHIEVED AGAINST THE POLICY
Withahighproportionofourassetsincashdepositsandfixedintereststocks,thebalanceofourinvestmentsarelinkedtothe UK
Equity market. The performance has broadly matched the movement in that market.
RESERVES POLICY
TheTrust'scharitableactivitiesincludethedevelopmentandmaintenanceofacancerscreeningandcounsellingservice,and the
financingofcancerresearchoveranumberofcontiguousareaswhich,tobeeffective,requiresacommitmenttofundingover the
mediumterm.Havingregardtothis,Trusteeshaveestablisheda policywherebytheunrestrictedfundsnotcommittedorinvested in
tangible fixed assets (the free reserves) should be maintained at a level sufficient to finance around two years' charitable expenditure.
ETHICAL POLICY
During this period,the Trusteeshave adoptedand publishedan ethicalpolicyfor GUTS.The policyis based on principles recommended
by the NationalCouncilfor VoluntaryOrganisations(NCVO),of whichGUTSis a member.GUTSconductsits affairsas far as possible in
accordance with those principles.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
The Trust is an unincorporated body set up by Trust Deed dated 7th September 1993 as amended on
5December2007,andisaregisteredcharity.ThecurrentTrusteesaresetoutonPage1.Trusteesarerequiredtoadminister the
charitabletrustinaccordancewiththeTrustDeedandconformtotherequirementsoftheCharityCommissionandInlandRevenue.
ThedaytodaymanagementofthetrustlieswiththeExecutiveCommitteeandFundraisingCommittee,detailsofwhichareset out
below.TheTrustDeedrequirestheretobeatleastthreeTrustees.Alltrusteesshallbyvirtueofhisorherpersonalor professional
qualificationsbe able to make a contributionto the pursuit of the objectsor the managementof the charity.The present trustees have
the following specific responsibilities in addition to their collective role:
Mr Iain Jourdan FRCS - Chairman and director of all medical matters
Mr J F Stebbing - Medical matters
Mr M Sharpe - Finance and regulatory matters
The inductionprocessfor any new Trusteecomprisesan initialmeeting with the Chairman,followedby meetingswith not less than two
otherTrustees.A newTrusteewouldbe appointedbya resolutionoftheTrusteespassedata specialmeeting,afterthenew Trustee
has signeda declarationof his acceptanceand willingnessto actin the interestsof the charity.New Trusteesare providedwitha pack
comprisinga copy of the Trust Deed, the last financialyear's annual report and accounts,and a copy of the Charity Commission booklets
"The Essential Trustee".
Thetrusteeshaveexaminedthemajorstrategic,businessandoperationalriskstowhichthecharityisexposed,andconfirm that
systems and procedures are in place to manage those risks.
GUTS Committee Structure
TheExecutiveCommittee,chairedbyMrIainJourdan,shallcomprisetheTrustees,TreasurerandFundraisingCoordinatorand be
responsible for policy, funding and charitable expenditure, staffing, legal and financial matters.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening (GUTS)
I report to the charitytrustees on my examinationof the accountsof GuildfordUndetectedTumourScreening(GUTS)(the Trust)for the
year ended 31 March 2022.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charitytrusteesof the Trustyou are responsiblefor the preparationof the accountsin accordancewiththe requirementsof the
Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
IreportinrespectofmyexaminationoftheTrust'saccountscarriedoutundersection145oftheActandincarryingout my
examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
Ihavecompletedmyexamination.Iconfirmthatnomaterialmattershavecometomyattentioninconnectionwiththe examination
giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
Thefinancialstatementsofthe charity,whichis a publicbenefitentityunderFRS 102,havebeen preparedin accordance with
theCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReportingbyCharities:StatementofRecommendedPracticeapplicable to
charitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardapplicableintheUKandRepublic of
Ireland(FRS102)(effective1 January2019)',FinancialReportingStandard102'TheFinancialReportingStandardapplicable in
theUKandRepublicofIreland'andtheCharitiesAct2011.Thefinancialstatementshavebeenpreparedunderthe historical
cost convention, with the exception of investments which are included at market value.
Income
All income is recognisedin the Statementof FinancialActivitiesonce the charityhas entitlementto the funds, it is probable that
the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructiveobligationcommittingthecharityto that
expenditure,it is probablethat a transferof economicbenefitswill be requiredin settlementand the amountof the obligation
canbemeasuredreliably.Expenditureisaccountedforonanaccrualsbasisandhasbeenclassifiedunderheadings that
aggregateallcostrelatedtothecategory.Wherecostscannotbedirectlyattributedtoparticularheadingstheyhave been
allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Grants offeredsubject to conditionswhich have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitmentbut not accrued
as expenditure.
Tangible fixed assets
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.
Plant and machinery- 25% on reducing balance
Fixtures and fittings- 33% on cost
Motor vehicles- 25% on reducing balance
Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restrictedfundscanonlybeusedforparticularrestrictedpurposeswithintheobjectsofthecharity.Restrictionsarise when
specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits
Thecharityoperatesadefinedcontributionpensionscheme.Contributionspayabletothecharity'spensionscheme are
charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
