Who We Are

Oxhill Youth Club is situated at Kyo Lane, Oxhill, Stanley. The youth club is situated next to a central bus route and young people can access the youth club from neighbouring villages although a lot of young people are dropped off by parents. Young People travel from as far as Dipton, Annfield Plain, Stanley, South Moor, Catchgate, Lanchester, New Kyo and Stanley. We have members from 10 local primary schools and four secondary schools within our catchment area, who attend on a regular basis. The philosophy that it is more important to take part than to win is one embraced by the club. There are also opportunities for other groups to use the facilities. A variety of other community groups both for adults and young people use the facilities at Oxhill Youth Club, this includes, Shikkari karate Kai, Shikkari Tiger Cubs, Slimming World, Ladies walking netball, it is also used throughout the year by the Prince's Trust and on occasions by DABGC for training course for young people. Oxhill Youth Club has always operated a full and varied programme, trying out new initiatives alongside more traditional youth club activities. We have responded with enthusiasm and vigour to a changing world over the last few years, to be more inclusive and provide a safe and welcoming place for young people to thrive in. The youth club offers four full time sessions per week. Undertakes numerous activities outside of the four sessions, offered by outside agencies which enlighten, reinforce and stretch the young people to give of their best and build strong characters. Oxhill Youth Club continues to be associated with the Duke of Edinburgh Award program, and The Key, Fun and Food, Durham Association of Boys and Girls Clubs, North East Youth, Durham Youth Print all of which has been very supportive during the last year. We were part of Stanley Area Youth Consortium in response to finding funding and working together on projects for the 2024-2025 period

This year we celebrated 63 years as a youth club serving the young people of the community. A great achievement and a big thank you to everyone over the years who have helped make this possible.

Chairperson Report

A very warm welcome & thanks to last year’s committee for their support throughout the year.

What a year it has been! We achieved the top accolade of being awarded the King’s Award for volunteer service. This was a fantastic outcome for everyone, especially our volunteers, young and old, and this will make us stand out as an extremely competent, hard-working, supportive, caring and effective service within our community.

We received funding from the Lottery to refit our old kitchen into the modern, fully equipped, efficient working one we have today. This is only one of the many grants that Joanne & Kyle have successfully managed to secure for us over this year to help us continue our work at a high standard.

Our affiliation to Durham Association Boys and Girls Clubs (DABGC) continues to help us provide fantastic opportunities for our members at Oxhill to take part in. We have also worked with Fun & Food & other local & national organisations to help widen the young people’s aspect on life.

My big thanks go to Joanne, Kyle, Sarah, Megan, our leaders and all our volunteers, who without them we would not have this hugely successful club that we have today, due to the tireless work they do. Their encouragement, friendship, hard work, dedication to their work ensures all our members are given equal opportunities to help them grow into the citizens of tomorrow.

We look forward to next year and continuing our work serving our community and young people.

Thank You!

Over the last year we have worked with amazing organisations that have offered fantastic opportunities to our young people and staff by providing free training sessions, events, information, advice and conferences. This has helped us provide a better service for young people in County Durham and the North East. We would like to say thank you to them for their support and we look forward to continuing to work with them again.

A lot of the work we do would not be possible at all without the support of funders that fund our projects, and we would like to say a huge thank you to them for their generosity and kindness that enables us to grow, adapt and provide the services we do to our young people and the community.
