## **Section C Objectives and activities**

The Dresden Trust was founded in 1993 in response to a call from Dresden for help rebuild the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), one of Europe’s most magnificent churches. It had collapsed as a result of the British and American bombing of February 1945, in which up to 25,000 people died.

After Germany was reunited, citizens of Dresden resolved to rebuild the church, and the late Alan Russell created The Dresden Trust in the UK to respond to their appeal. Over £1 million (€1.5 million) was donated by thousands of people, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Trust had a new golden Orb and Cross crafted in England for the top of the cupola. One craftsman (Alan Smith) was the son of a pilot who **Summary of the objects of the** took part in the bombing. 100,000 people attended the raising of the Orb **charity set out in its** and Cross to the top of the Frauenkirche in 2004, and a year later the **governing document** church was re-consecrated.

The Trust today seeks to fulfil its mission of reconciliation through educational and cultural initiatives, memorials and visits. Under the Trust’s Dresden Scholars’ Scheme, boys and girls from Dresden/Saxony receive scholarships to attend independent schools in Britain: about 300 have done so since 2000. And British pupils can spend several weeks at a Dresden school, staying with local families.

In 2025, The Dresden Trust launched The Learning Path. With this idea, we intend to make the history of Dresden in the 20th Century accessible for school pupils in a brand-new way, and empower students to take the lead and teach each other.

In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.

The main activities of the Dresden Trust over the reporting period (06 April 2024 to 05 April 2025) were the following:

**Dresden Scholar Scheme:** The Dresden Trust is committed to educational exchange between Germany and the UK. As part of our scholar scheme, we have supported 8 British pupils to spend two weeks each at a partner school in Dresden Germany.

**Dresden Learning Path:** The Dresden Trust has developed a free interactive learning programme for international and local schools in the city of Dresden, Germany together with our partner organization Fördergesellschaft Frauenkirche. This new initiative was inaugurated by HRH the Duke of Kent in Dresden on February 13[th] , 2025.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

**Visit to Dresden for British ambassador and Duke of Kent:** Over the course of 2024 up until February 13, 2025, the Dresden Trust has worked with the royal household and the British embassy in Berlin to prepare commemoration events around the 80[th] anniversary of the Dresden bombing. We achieved extensive media coverage that was beneficial to the both the embassy and the royal household, worked with local partner organizations on the schedule of events for the day, and took part in an additional on site preparation day in December 2024.

Strategy day **:** During our annual strategy day in November 2024 we defined strategic objectives for 2025 and beyond. The board of trustees decided to increase fundraising activities, widen the board of trustees with a commitment to diversity, extending our efforts in the field of educational exchange between the UK and Germany towards institutions of higher education, keep building our social media presence to reach more people in both countries, and scale our efforts in our existing scholarship scheme and learning path projects.

The activities of the Dresden Trust foster the friendship and intercultural exchange between the United Kingdom and Germany. We particularly support British pupils and university students to gain valuable international study experience, improve their foreign language skills, and build their social skills. Additionally, the Dresden Trust offers volunteering experiences for young British professionals within the trust and build a passion for charitable work.

## Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The main achievements of the Dresden Trust over the reporting period (06 April 2024 to 05 April 2025) were the following:

**Digitization:** The Dresden Trust enhanced our online presence with continuous improvements to our websites (Dresden Trust and Learning Path) over the course of the reporting period. In an effort to reach more British pupils and university students, we also built out our social media presence on LinkedIn.

**Educational exchange:** The Dresden Scholar Scheme keeps increasing in popularity year over year and we enabled 7 secondary school students and a young musician to participate in intercultural exchange programmes in the UK and Germany.

**Learning Path:** After the successful inauguration in February 2025 the learning path project successfully found new partner schools in Germany. The Dresden Trust also secured partnerships with local German charities such as the Bürgerstiftung Dresden which support the project with voluntary workers that are essential for fulfilling our goal to provide a free interactive learning experience focused on the importance of friendship and intercultural exchange between the UK and Germany.

**Commemoration:** Over the course of the reporting period, the Dresden Trust participated in multiple intercultural exchange focused events in Coventry, Dresden, London, and Oxford. The most important milestone was our organisation of a very successful visit of our royal patron The Duke of Kent and of the British ambassador to Dresden on the 80[th] commemoration of the Dresden Bombing on February 13[th] , 2025. Both the Royal Household and the British Embassy in Berlin marked this event as a success due to the very positive media coverage that was received in both the UK and Germany.
