The intake of animals has not slowed down and the daily requests from the public wanting to surrender their animals has increased. Some of the reasons given are, moving house and not allowed to take pets, another is the financial burden of feeding their pets and the rising cost of vet bills along with mental health issues and domestic abuse.
Our Alternative Project which was started 20yrs ago looking after family pets in times of crisis is ever more in demand. The project covers emergency hospital admissions, fleeing domestic violence and temporary homelessness.
The trustees are pleased to report that our foster home network has increased over the last year with a dedicated team of people fostering animals one behalf of the charity.
The trustees are also delighted to report the charity is still able to support local food banks through donations of pet food for individuals struggling with the financial cost of feeding their animals. Having access to pet food through food banks has great benefits for many people if they are struggling financially. In some cases, it means family pets can stay with their families rather than be surrendered. We are fortunate enough to have pet food bins in eight local supermarkets.
Last year we reported we were hoping to build a purpose-built cat and kitten unit for cats with very young kittens providing a safe and tranquil space for them, the trustees are very happy to report that we have achieved this, and it is now up and running.
Our fundraising continues and we now have a designated person who looks after our fundraising calendar making sure the months ahead are productive, raising much needed funds as well as raising awareness and education in animal welfare through our leaflets and the services we provide.
The trustees are also very pleased to report that we have been nominated and selected as Charity of the Year by Pets at Home, Teesside. This brings huge benefits for the charity with the opportunity to fundraise, collect donations of pet food and interact with customers on the work we do, this is a wonderful platform to raise our profile.
Over the coming months we are hoping to replace our old cat isolation unit with a new one.
We have also designated a piece of land on our site to create a habitat for wildlife through the planting of trees, shrubs and wildflowers.
The trustees move forward as always with hope and enthusiasm, helping the steady stream of animals that cross our path along with promoting the work of the charity. We do this with resolve and determination along with our unwavering volunteers and supporters to whom we owe so much.
