## **What we do.** 

Christian Schools Workers Hastings (CSWH) comes under the umbrella of the Hastings Christian Trust and is the operational side of the work. CSWH aims to work with all of the academies and schools in the primary and secondary phases, twenty one in total, across the towns of Hastings and St. Leonards-on-sea, by offering the following activities that introduce  Jesus to the students: 

- acts of collective worship (assemblies) 

- Religious Education (R.E.) lessons 

- JAFFA (Jesus A Friend For All) Clubs in primary schools 

- Hot Chocolate Clubs in secondary schools 

- Prayer Spaces 

- Year 6 transition days 

- Residential experiences for primary and secondary students 

- Link Youth – for teenagers to help bridge the transition from in-school clubs to joining a local church 

- Drawing on the interactive resource of Counties UK - GSUS Live. 

The work is carried out by two employed workers, one full time, one part-time (0.8 fte). The workers oversee a small team of volunteers that assist in enabling the programmes to be carried out. The work in schools is overseen by a Management Committee of six volunteers from different backgrounds who bring a variety of skills to help the work in schools and to assist it to operate efficiently and effectively. This Committee reports to the Trustees, five at present, who have a strategic role in the work. CSWH is a Mission Partner of Scripture Union which enables our organisation to benefit from their training opportunities, legal and personnel advice and networking arrangements. 

## **Autumn Term 2021.** 

Schools work was not fully able to physically take place with schools taking safeguarding measures with the full re-integration of pupils post pandemic. Some assemblies and JAFFA Clubs did take place face-to-face, as did Link Youth. CSWH did offer online activities such as assemblies and RE lessons. The Trustees recruited a new worker deeming that the potential for expansion of the work and the benefits of two workers working in partnership warranted the decision. At Christmas, activities such as Christingle and Acts of Collective Worship were offered to schools but the take up was low. The first of CSWH’s termly newsletters was distributed to supporters. The Team Leader regularly updates the website to maintain our online presence. 



## **Spring Term 2022** 

Acts of Collective Worship, JAFFA Clubs and Hot Chocolate Clubs returned to normal and Link Youth continued to run one evening per week. One of our workers magnificently completed running the Hastings Half Marathon which proved to be a successful fundraising activity as well. One worker and a trustee began a series of presentations of CSWH’s work to local churches. The aim of this initiative was to: 

- refresh church members’ knowledge of the work, 

- share the work’s successes and challenges, 

- thank churches and their members for their support of CSWH’s work and 

- request further prayerful, practical and financial support. 

CSWH also subscribed to the Scripture Union initiative ‘Revealing Jesus’ which is SU’s response to the research that shows approximately 95% of under 16s have no involvement with church or Christian based activities. As part of this partnership, the two workers will be trained as Faith Guides. 

## **Summer term 2022.** 

Each week of term 5, the two workers, plus volunteers were involved with leading a Prayer/Reflection Space. Each Prayer Space runs for 4-5 days in mainly, but not exclusively, primary schools. Seven Prayer spaces ran in total and were very well received. In term 6 the workers took the Moving On activity day into over ten primary schools. This is a transition activity to help year 6 students with their step onto secondary education. Every year 6 student across the town receives the CSWH produced Moving On book which is crammed with tips and advice for moving on. 1050 books were given out to students. One of our workers also went to local primary schools to undertake question and answer sessions with students about Christianity, God, Jesus and faith. These sessions went very well. 

CSWH concluded its year by holding its annual celebration evening for supporters. We gave thanks to God for all the ways in which the work had been blessed by God during the year. We estimated that there had been over 7000 student contact occasions over the year.  The trustees and committee members also held their annual review and planning day.

## **Independent Examiner’s Report to the trustees of Hastings Christian Trust** 

I report on the accounts of the trust for the year ended 31 March 2022 which are set out below. 

Respective responsibilities of the trustees and examiner: 

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. 

It is my responsibility to: 

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; 

- To follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and 

- To state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.  It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required by an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters as set out in the statement below. 

## **Independent examiner’s statement** 

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to by attention: 

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements 

   - a. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and 

   - b. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act 

have not been met; or 

2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
