Trustee Report 33[rd] Lancaster Scout Group 2020/2021

The Group is a Sea Scout Group. Sea Scouts Groups are very similar to any other Scout Group; they have the same aim but use a special emphasis on water activities and maritime training within their programme to achieve that aim. [Water activities can provide the adventure and adrenaline rush that youngsters are looking for. Water activities are an area where skills and age do not necessarily correlate and provide an ideal opportunity for Group members to teach each other.]

The Group holds Royal Navy Recognition No. 86 (subject to Biannual RN reviews)

The Aim of the Group is to promote the development of young people in the District of Lancaster in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

The Groups Trustee committee :

Ex officio

Group Chair – Philip Sharples

Treasurer – Barbara Holt

Secretary – Pamela Marshall

Group Scout Leader – Hazel Sharples

Trustees

Theresa Higginson

Helen Parrington

Paul Marshall

Heather Painter

The group provides opportunities for young people to join either Beavers, Cubs or Scouts Sections

Each Section is lead by a team of Leader, assistant leader, skills instructors and parent helpers. We currently have 14 volunteers in addition to the trustees helping to run this group.

2020/21 has been a tricky year for all concerned.

However, 33[rd] was one of the few groups who continued to have all the sections – Beavers, Cubs and Scouts meeting regularly throughout. It may have been virtually via zoom or when we could, ‘face to face’ with all the restrictions and paperwork to complete behind the scenes, but we managed it. All the Leaders of all the sections worked really hard to make it happen. Getting to grips with technology so meetings could occur, planning a programme that could be done virtually; face to face activities that could be done whilst socially distancing and not sharing equipment! Our leaders were on a steep learning curve at times but they succeeded in delivering a varied, interesting, exciting and adventurous programme and by doing so they were able to and give our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts a little bit of normality. A continuation of all the things Scouting encompasses which we know made a difference to our young people, when the majority of their other out of school activities just stopped.

Our parents have been supportive throughout the year and have read and responded to all the emails and risk assessments that were required by the Scout Association in order to ensure we were keeping both our young people but also our leaders safe.

The committee, ensured we had the equipment and resources to continue with our activities while maintaining a safe environment in which to meet.

As we came out of ‘lock down’ the Scout Section initiated a recruitment drive which has succeeded in increasing considerably the numbers of young people in all sections so the Group goes forward into the next year in a healthy state.

Thank you to everyone for what you have done.
