Report for Little Stanney W.I. 2020

The average monthly attendance while we were still meeting in person was 57 and the average monthly attendance using Zoom was 28. The total membership this year is 71 plus 1 joint member.

This past year started normally, with Dominoes sessions most weeks and our monthly Lunch Club meals. Our Book Club continued with monthly meetings in a member’s home. There were monthly craft sessions at Store First and our highly successful “Our Show” in the Village Hall, where members showed a fabulous array of crafts and produce for judging. Members got involved with the green hearts for climate change and we made Xmas baubles for the Cheshire Show and a Xmas wreath.

We had a High Tea party in September at Saughall and a Christmas Beatles Show Party at The Queens Hotel, Chester during November.

We planted a tree at Bridge Wellness Gardens to commemorate Cheshire Federation’s centenary year. The Mayor, Jean Harding (CFWI Chairman) and some of our members helped with the ceremony of tree planting.

We had our monthly meeting in November with speaker Judith Popley. Our December meeting was our Christmas Party and in January we had speaker Paul Stockton. February saw us being entertained by the Nordic Scouse ladies. March was an informative talk by Paul Loughnane about New Ferry Butterfly Farm.

THEN Covid-19 arrived in the UK in late March and everything had to come to a stop. We were not able to hold our April meeting or indeed, hold anything in person for the rest of the year.

All the speakers and events planned had to be cancelled. When we realised what was happening, members agreed that we pay for the Pro Package of Zoom and continued on line. We began weekly Zoom coffee mornings and fortnightly Quiz’s. We continued with monthly Book Club sessions.

For those of us not willing or able to join in on Zoom but had internet access, there were frequent emails giving details of everything that was going on, including a quiz. We helped those not familiar with the internet to get on Zoom.

Twice monthly, there was a mailing for those of us not on email, which included minutes, quizzes, newsletters etc.

For May & June, we made our own entertainment on Zoom and introduced speakers. In July we had a talk on stem cell donation, August saw us listening to Anne Davies from Bridge Wellness Gardens and in September, it was Donavon Lewis of the Blue Planet. For our October meeting, we had Fiona Barry & Hilary Robinson from CFWI give us a talk about Climate Change which gave us a lot of food for thought.

Many of our members joined in with a project knitting blanket strips for a local charity and knitting bonnets for new babies at our local hospital. Many of us were able to fill Christmas shoe boxes for the usual charity. Some of our members also took on the maintenance of the entrance flower beds at our local charity – Bridge Wellness Gardens. We have made a real difference to the kerb appeal for them. These are things we could do whilst being locked down due to the virus.

We have done our absolute best to keep in touch with all of our members and continue to do so.
