Aims & Objectives

At Westview Playgroup we offer a well-equipped, safe, and comfortable environment for children from the age of 2. With our emphasis on learning through play in a stimulating and nurturing environment, our highly trained and experienced staff ensure that our pre-school sessions are filled with activities and experiences for the children that will enable them to develop whilst enjoying their time here with us.

Our values

Our main aim is to provide a friendly, fun-filled, and stimulating environment where the children feel both safe and valued.

We aim to:

Learning at Westview Playgroup.

At Westview Playgroup the children learn through play. Playgroup sessions are filled with activities and experiences, both indoors and outdoors that will enable the children to develop and grow. All staff are trained in guiding the children to progress towards the early learning goals of the early year’s foundation stage. The curriculum recognizes that all children are individuals and develop at different rates. There are seven areas of learning which are interconnected; Personal, Social and Emotional, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Knowledge and Understanding The World, Expressive Arts and Design.

Activities are set up with underlying educational purposes, but the total emphasis is on fun and learning through play. Staff recognize children’s interests and plan activities around them. This has been shown to be the most beneficial way for a child to learn and develop. Staff at Westview Playgroup provide children with opportunities to explore, try new things and experience the world around them.

Staff use Makaton sign language to help children develop their communication skills. We use visuals (indoor and outside) which help provide structure, improve understanding, help with daily routine and offer opportunities to interact with others. Staff observe the children and plan their next goals to ensure that they are achieving and making progress during their time with us.

Structure, Governance & Management

While day-to-day running of the playgroup is carried out by the staff, overall responsibility for the management of the team and the playgroup rests with the Committee. Our current committee is made up for parents, past parents, and playgroup staff. We hold regular committee meetings throughout the year and our AGM in July.

2023/24 was a challenging year financially for the setting. However, we were able to fundraise locally from parents & businesses and receive a grant from Swanley Town Council which supported us to stay open.

We welcomed two new members of staff in 2023/24.

- Activities during the year (April 2023 March 2024)

At the start of April 2023 at Westview Playgroup there were 37 children on the register, 16 children graduated in July 2023 and we had 20 on the register to start the academic school year in September 2023.

In September 2023, the focus was on re-settling all the children post the summer holidays and introducing the new children to WVPG.

In October 2023, the collaboration that WVPG are part of with other local nurseries paid for a visit from Zoolab and the children got to experience and handle different animals.

At Christmas time we held fundraising events at the Downsview fete and as part of the Christmas concert in the setting, we ran activities including lucky tip, teddy bear tombola and a cake sale

In the Spring term we hosted an Easter Stay & Play and Mother’s Day Stay & Play which are a great way to invite families to the setting to see what we do and how we do it. It’s important that parents are able to see how WVPG supports their children to learn and develop

Signed

Hannah Bird, Chair
