Objectives & Activities
The 2019/2020 year had again been a very challenging one as we were hit with the Coronavirus Pandemic and the first lockdown. We were closed from March to June 2020, however we continued to receive full funding from Cornwall Council which enabled us to pay our staff’s wages without furloughing them.
The number of children at pre-school for the 2019/2020 year started off very low due to a large proportion of children leaving to go to primary. This pattern repeats itself year after year. The numbers remained relatively low throughout the year no doubt due to the pandemic and the coronavirus restrictions in place regarding children attending dual settings.
We recruited a new pre-school assistant in September 2019.
We said goodbye to several long - standing committee members in July 2020 as their children left for primary.
Pre school has been running since 1975 and we continue working hard to keep this a community led asset. Maintaining this status in the climate of increasing legislation gets more difficult each year and recruiting new committee members is always challenging as parents do not have the spare time available to commit to volunteering when they work long hours and have children to look after.
We were unable to run the baby & toddler group from March 2020 due to the pandemic. We are hoping to get the group up and running again in the 2020-2021 year.
Achievements & Performance
The preschool was open 4.5 days a week in the 2019-2020 year and children’s attendance was good on all days. Activities for children at preschool have been improved by the strong skills within the staffing team.
Ofsted have not inspected our setting during this year.
The preschool continued to achieve its aim of providing a vibrant and caring environment for preschoolers to be cared for and encouraged to be ready for their transition to school. The preschool is still attracting children from outside the village.
Financial Review
Due to the pandemic and low numbers of children, 2019 – 2020 was a tricky year for pre-school. We were also unable to undertake our usual fundraising events due to coronavirus restrictions. Luckily, we secured a grant from the Parish Council which helped to keep us afloat and we weathered the pandemic during the 2019-2020 year reasonably well. Whilst we were closed during the first lockdown, our Landlord the Landulph Memorial Hall did not charge us rent for this period which was helpful financially.
We are very proud and grateful that we made it through the year as we are aware that many small pre-schools in the country were not as lucky. We are very grateful to the supportive community that we reside in. We would not still be operating without their generosity.
