YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2024
The Trustees present their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year
ended 31 March 2024. This Annual Report provides comprehensive information regarding the
functioning of the organisation, liquidity and financial stability, services and activities undertaken at
OSCAR Bristol during the year. This report will pay particular attention to our achievements over the
year and our aim at making improvement5 for the future developments of the organisation.
Structtsre Governance and Mana
ement
Organisation
The organisation is an unincorporated charitable body, registered on 10th February 1993 and is
governed by its constitution which was adopted in January 1992. A resolution was passed on 29th
October 2022 changing the charity name from 8ristol OSCAR to OSCAR Bristol.
The Trustees are appolnted or reappointed annually at the AGM.
Ob"ectlves and actlvities
Objectlves of the Charity
The objectives of the charity as stated in its governing documents are:
To promote awareness of the condition and its management for individuals suffering from Sickle Cell
disorders and Thalassaemia.
To increase awareness, knowledge and understanding of Sickle Cell disorder5 and Thalassaemia in the
community and other organisations.
To support research into the nature, prevalence, treatment and prevention of Sickle Cell disorders and
Thalassaemia and to a55iSt in the dissemination of the relevant infomation.
OSCAR Bristol is a forward lookin8 and visionary or8anisation and our mission statement is".
To promote the relief of persons suffering from Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia blood disorders.
To educate the public in order to increase knowledge and understanding of Sickle Cell and
Thalassaemia blood disorders.
To promote research into the nature, prevalence, treatment and prevention of Sickle Cell and
Thalassaemia disorders, to disseminate and publish the results there of.
To raise the level of awareness of Sickle Cell disorder and Thalassaemia, among the public and
medical profession, for the benefit of inhabitants in Bristol and surrounding areas.
To offer support and counselling to people with Sickle Cell orThalassaemia, and other related
unusual haemoglobinopathies.
To raise funds, or receive donations and contributions, whether by subscriptions or otherwise.
To support and sponsor promising areas of research.
To do all such other lawful things as to further the charitable objectives of the organisation.
Review of activities and objectfves In the year
OSCAR Bristol has now established itself as a vital part of the community, that supports people living
with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia, and to also educate the general public about Sickle Cell and
Thalassaemia, and the vital need for blood donation.
We continued with our"Awareness" campaign spread over the year, which involved the following:
On the Ilth April, OSCAR Bristol met with Careers support at their centre in Fishponds to find
out how we could better collaborate in supporting people living with Sickle Cell and
Thalassaemia.

On the 19th April, OSCAR Bristol attended Yhe cost-of-living crisi< meeting with the Mayor
at City Hall.
On the 5th June, OSCAR Bristol carried out Sickle Cell patient support visits.
On the 10th June, OSCAR Bristol the Sickle Cell Gala fundraising event in Birmingham.
On the 15th June, OSCAR Bristol exhibited at the Charty Conference Expo in Bath.
On the 17th June, OSCAR Bristol held a Sickle Cell Awareness Day at the Learning centre in
St. Pauls
On the 4th July, OSCAR Bristol fundraised at the St. Pauls Carniv31.
On the 21st July, Oscar Bristol hosted a Thalassaemia Awareness Day with UKTS.
On the 29- 30th July OSCAR Bristol hosted Genomics for a Sickle Cell event.
On the 20th August OSCAR Bristol exhibited at the exhibition organised by D￿.
On the 19th September, OSCAR Bristol attended the Sickle Cell Open Day at the Children's
Hospital, BRI
On the 22nd September, OSCAR Bristol held its annual Dinner/dance.
On the 2nd October, as part of Black History Month, OSCAR Bristol held an Awareness Day at
the MET School.
On the 26th October, OSCAR Bristol held a meeting with SANIUS.
On the 6th December, OSCAR Bristol joined the online Sickle Cell support group meeting.
On the 10th January, OSCAR Bristol did one home visit.
On the 23rd January, OSCAR Bristol held online Q&A sessions with dental students from
Plymouth University.
On the 14th March, OSCAR Bristol carried out DIY works at the home of a Sickle Cell patient.
On the 20th March, OSCAR Bristol held a meeting with Cianna's Smile in Readin8.
On the 22nd March, OSCAR held its AGM.
Achievements and performance In the year
OSCAR Bristol's Awareness Campaign achieved much throughout the year, as follows:
OSCAR Bristol continues to be one of over sixty warm welcoming spaces in Bristol.
OSCAR Bristol has begun providing welfare and housing support and guidance to people living
with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia.
OSCAR Bristol now provides £10.1￿ food vouchers for people struggling with the cost-of -living-
crisis, who lives with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia.
The Sickle Cell Awareness Day in St. Pauls was very well attended and informative, which
resulted in two people si8ned up to become blood donors.
OSCAR Bristol successfully fundraised at the St. Pauls Carnival, raising in excess of £lOO.00
The OSCAR Bristol Dinner/dance was well attended and very informative.
The OSCAR Bristol Awareness Day was hugely successful in attendance, and informative. The
MET School raised in excess of £600.00 towards the work of OSCAR Bristol.
SANIUS has agreed to provide health monitoring watches to OSCAR Bristol on request for free.
for people living with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia.
OSCAR Bristol has responded and is carrying out Hospitsl and Home visits on request.
OSCAR Bristol now provides online Q&A sessions for Plymouth University dental students
regarding care for people with Sickle Cell.

Financlal review includin8 reserves policy and rfsk management
Although at present the trustees have no formal policy. they intend to build unrestricted reserves to
cover salaries and running costs for up to 12 months, but due to present financial position this ha5 not
been possible to date.
The trustees have examined the major risks to which the charity is exposed and systems have been
established to mitigate those risks. These procedures will be annually reviewed to ensure that they
still meet the needs of the charity.
Public benefft
In shaping the objectives for the year and planning activities, the trustees have considered the Charity
commission's guidance on public benefit, including the guidance 'public benefiv running a charlty
(P821.

nsibilities in relation to the financlal statements
The charity trustees are responsible for preparing a trustees, annual report and financial statements
in accordance with the accounting policies set out in notes to the accounts and comply with the
charity's governing document. the Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charitie5:
Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance
with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland {FRS 1021 issued on
16 July 2014.
Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements
for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the charitls financial activities during the year
and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees
are required to:
Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles in the Charities Sorp;
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unle55 it is inappropriate to
presume that the charity will continue in business, and
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable
accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the
financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the applicable Charities (Accounts and
Reports) Regulations, and the provisions of the governing document.
The trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and taking
reasonable step5 for the prevention and detettion of fraud and other irregularities.

BasIs of Preparation
al These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction
value unless otherwise stated in the relevant notelsl to these accounts.
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting
and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Finanaal Reporting Standard applicable in the
UK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 102) effective on tst January 2019. the Financial Reporting Stsndard applicable in the
United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021 and with the Charities Act 2011.

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charities ability to continue a5 a going ¢oncern
due to the renewed interest in the work of OSCAR Bristol by funders locally and nationally- to date we have received
more funding Opportunities than in the previous four years. We are projecting a 15% increase in funding over the next 12
months.
cl The charity constitutes a public benefit entlty as defined by FRS 102.
Accountlng Policies
al Income from donations 15 included in income when these are receivable. except as follows.
il When donors specify that donations given to the charity Must be used in future accounting periods, the income 15

I report on the accounts of the Charity forthe Year ended 31st March 2024 which are set out on pages
7-14.

onsibilities and basis of re
ort
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are re5pon5ible for the preparation of the accounts in
accordance with the requirements of the Charitie5 Act 2011 {'the ACV).
I report in respect of my examination of the charitrls accounts carried out under section 145 of the
2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the
Charity Commission under section 145(51{bl of the Act.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in
connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act;
or
the accounts do not accord with those records," or
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and
content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other
than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view which is not a matter
considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connectlon with the examination to
which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the
accounts to be reached.
