ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024
In line with our objectives of promoting the life and work of Newcastle’s 18th Century composer Charles Avison, and the work of other composers, the Avison Charitable Trust has continued its involvement in music performances in the North East region and the adjoining Scottish Borders throughout 2023-24.
Members of The Avison Ensemble, an outstanding professional early music orchestra supported by the Trust, have performed in the region and have supported a public concert at Durham Cathedral with members of the Cathedral’s choir.
Once again, the Trust has supported and encouraged the work of The William Shield Festival, which promotes the work of Avison’s pupil, the composer William Shield, who was born in the North East of England.
The Festival has brought together many musicians on Tyneside in performances and educational projects spanning over several weeks, and has reached a large audience. Many venues throughout Newcastle and Gateshead have been utilised in order to expand the reach of the Festival. One performance was given in the Scottish Borders.
Our involvement with the William Shield Festival both continues and highlights the work of the Avison Charitable Trust, and draws on our support through social media advertising and website promotion, as well as through financial aid.
Additional support has been given to Dr. Simon Fleming, who is preparing a biography of Charles Avison which is to be published in 2024. The biography will be a great addition to expanding the knowledge of Charles Avison and a copy will be placed in our Avison Archive situated at the Newcastle Central Library, which is named The Charles Avison Building.
The Avison Charitable Trust’s copies of the two Charles Avison Workbooks reside at the library and are regularly accessed by members of the public and consulted for academic research.
Our 18 CD recordings continue to sell to a worldwide market and are regularly played on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Royalties and sales continue to provide an income for the Trust.
We gratefully acknowledge support of a grant of £24,000 given by the R.F. Gibson Trust in support and recognition of our work.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/ 03 / 2024 .
- Responsibilities and As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation basis of report of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have examiner's statement come to my attention (other than that disclosed below *) in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
