ANNUAL REPORT 2021
The Directors present their annual report and the financial statements of the Company for the year ended 31 August 2021.
Company law requires the directors to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of the Company’s affairs and of the profit or loss for the year.
In preparing those financial statements, the directors are required to:
-
Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.
-
Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.
The directors are responsible for:
-
Keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time, the financial position of the Company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006.
-
Safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
ACTIVITIES
The principal activities of the Company as outlined in the Memorandum of Association of 17[th] October 2018 are:
-
The objects for which the Society is established are to promote and advance agriculture for the benefit of the public and to such end generally to improve and publicise it in all its branches and to encourage skill and industry in it and in all trades, crafts and professions connected with it.
-
To hold in pursuance of its main objects an annual agricultural show provided that the Society shall not be obliged to hold a show in any year in relation to which the council of the society shall resolve that the holding of such a show shall be impracticable or not in the interests of the Society.
BUSINESS REVIEW
The results for the year are set out in the Statement of Financial Activities elsewhere in this booklet.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
The Society has gradually returned to life over the last 12 months, following the lockdowns and widespread confusion of 2020.
We held our first online event in March, when Henry Barringer of Savills presented ‘rewilding’ to around 50 members. He talked us through the process and there was lively interest in considering the various opportunities and challenges of such a project. In April, we were still online but on more familiar ground: a gardening tutorial from local broadcaster Ken Crowther. This was an interactive hour packed full of humour and handy tips.
In June, we Zoomed in on Spain’s Hall Estate in Finchingfield and the conservation work of Archie Ruggles-Brise. ‘Leaky’ dams, both man-made and built by the beavers he introduced, have benefited the farm and the village, by distributing the river’s floodwaters in a manageable way.
The Essex Schools Food and Farming Day returned in a new, Covid-safe form in 2021. Rebecca Halls and Annabelle Rout designed a day on which EAS members delivered an educational package to participating schools. There was virtual and interactive content, complete with seeds and local produce to allow the schools to experience food and farming in their own bubble. The Society is grateful to all the sponsors, donors and volunteers that made the new-look day such a success. Given that we head into the winter unsure of how the world will look in 2022, the organising committee has decided to use the ‘in school’ format again next year. We will make every effort to return to a large event in 2023, although the main challenge will be gaining sufficient County Council funding.
In September, the County Harvest Festival and Ploughing Match went ahead and it was great to see members gathered in person. Unfortunately, the President’s Garden Party and Essex Farms Competition were cancelled for a second year running. Events planned for Spring 2021 will happen in Autumn or mostly in Spring 2022.
An evening with Essex Search & Rescue in October will be a welcome return to live events. It will take place in the newly renovated medieval Black Barn at Layer Marney Tower and will also feature a display of members’ photographs, taken for a competition during the summer and blown up in fabulous technicolour. The entries were judged by The Sun’s royal photographer Arthur Edwards MBE and the Society’s President Charles Gooch, with the winners being recognised at the event. Thanks go to sponsors Gepp Solicitors, Hawkspur and Hamilton Carpets and organisers Rosemary Alexander and Spencer Davis.
I would like to thank everyone involved for their help throughout the year and wish the new Council all the best. I trust the Society will now make up in style for the relative inactivity of the last 18 months. Along with the delivery of educational and social events, it will also be crucial to encourage new members and a generation of leaders for Essex Agricultural Society.
