The Anglican-Lutheran Society Annual General Meeting - 11th March
2023 Coventry Cathedral
Co-Moderators’ Report
The main aims of the Anglican-Lutheran Society are to:
-
to encourage prayer for the unity of the Church, and especially between Anglicans and Lutherans;
-
to develop opportunities for common worship, study, friendship and witness;
-
to promote a wider interest in and knowledge of the Anglican and Lutheran traditions, and contemporary developments affecting them
The functions of the Co-Moderators are to:
-
ensure that the work of the Society is conducted in accordance with its aims;
-
ensure that the business of the Executive Committee is conducted in an orderly and effective manner;
-
ensure that the requirements of this Constitution are met;
-
ensure that the Society's Newsletter serves the aims of the Society and reflects its concerns in a balanced and proper manner;
-
invite the nomination of persons to temporary membership of the Executive Committee when positions become vacant between Annual General Meetings;
-
ensure that appropriate publicity be given to the Society. The Secretary shall
-
call General Meetings and meetings of the Executive Committee
The Executive Committee met four times. Despite COVID restrictions the Society managed to continue its activities. As an international organisation the Society not only at its Committee meetings but also through different channels paid serious attention to the war in Ukraine which started in February, following the Russian annexation of Crimea and parts of Southeast of Ukraine in 2014. For instance, in the October issue of The Window the Ukrainian situation was highlighted.
The Society is a well-supported and active international organisation, providing information and networking opportunities to several hundred people in various countries and in all continents. Last year the Society has again pursued its aims in a number of ways.
A reception was held at Westminster Abbey on 17 January for all the Lutheran chaplains and pastors in the various National Churches, the Lutheran Church in Great Britain, the Council of Lutheran Churches, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in England.
The Annual Meeting was held on 5 March in the German Church in London. In conjunction with the meeting we had a seminar on “Climate energy. Connecting faith and community”. The meeting and the seminar were well covered in the Society’s Newsletter the Window.
The biannual Conference was held in Trondheim, Norway, 25-29 July. The theme was “A Pilgrimage Towards Hope”. Pilgrimages in the UK and Norway were described and the participants also had an opportunity to take part in a short pilgrimage as part of St Olav Festival. The conference brought together more than 50 people from several countries for five days to hear presentations from experts on a pilgrim-related topics. We were happy to have with us many younger participants. Much of the committee's time was devoted to planning the programme and arrangements. Special thanks to our National Coordinator in Norway, the Rev Fredrik Ulseth. In the Window special issue in September there was a full coverage of the successful conference.
The Anglican Bishops’ Lambeth Conference took place in July-August in which our Co-President Bishop David Hamid and Co-Moderator Bishop Michael Ipgrave took part. One of the speakers at the Conference was the General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation, the Rev Dr Anne Burghardt. It may be noted that she is also a member of the Society.
WCC General Assembly which was held in Karlsruhe, Germany, AugustSeptember, was attended by many members of the Society. Also, the activities of the Conference of European Churches were actively observed.
Contacts were made with several educational institutions and Colleges in Europe. Ecumenical links were strong, e.g., we have one Methodist and one Roman Catholic observer in our Committee.
We have actively used four important channels of communication:
The web site (anglican-lutheran-society.org) which during past 15 years has twice been updated, gives members and enquirers an easy way of accessing information about the Society and keeps up-to-date on Anglican-Lutheran issues. For example, the themes and presentations at the AGM and the Conference are available on the web site. It is an important means of communicating with members and encouraging new ones.
Another important channel of communication for the Society is its newsletter, The Window, which was published four times. It is sent to all members and also to ecumenical offices, many theological colleges and international contacts. Your views would be welcome - as would articles of interest to our members. We are extremely grateful to the editor Dick Lewis for his skilful and innovative way of producing each issue. The Window clearly reflects the international character of the Society.
In social media both Facebook and Twitter have been used actively. On Facebook we have four regional or thematic sites.
We have national coordinators in Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the United States. They
promote the Society in their countries, in some cases collect subscriptions and, as time and money permit, organise activities for local members.
The work of the society is done by volunteers - there are no paid staff. As moderators we can say that we are blessed with committee members and national coordinators who are willing to interrupt their busy schedules to attend
meetings, plan programmes, promote the Society and in various ways support the objectives of the organisation. We express thanks to all members of the executive committee, both elected trustees and observers, and the national coordinators. Without them, there would be no Anglican-Lutheran Society. A very special word of thanks to our Presidents is in order. Bishops Jana JerumaGrinberga and David Hamid have been unstinting in giving so much of their time and their enormous talents to the work of the Society. They have been active, hands-on Presidents and the committee has enormous appreciation, respect and affection for them.
