Newbridge Primary School Association 2021-2022

The NPSA is the parent and teacher fundraising body for Newbridge Primary School, Bath, UK. The Association’s aims are to advance the education of the pupils by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for education at the school. In doing so it provides opportunities for parents and local community to get involved with fun activities at the school, and raises funds for ‘extra’ items outside of the main school budget. The NPSA Trustees meet approximately once every month to vote on funding requests made by the school’s Senior Management team, and the wider NPSA membership meet once every two months to plan events.
This year Katherine Wellings continued in her role as Chair, Miriam Wharf remained as Secretary and Katherine Runacres remained as Treasurer. Katherine W and Miriam wish to step down at the end of the school year, but Katherine R will stay on for one further year until the end of academic year 2022-23.
School was very much back to normal from September 2021, and our opportunities for fundraising were much increased, although not completely back up to pre-pandemic levels.
The starting balance in September 2021 was £37,707 (this is both money in the bank and cash in the safe) and the finishing balance on 31[st] August 2021 was £49,590 (again, both money in the bank and cash in the safe combined).
As you can see the balance is unusually high. We were hoping to spend £22,000 on outdoor play equipment for the school playgrounds over the summer, but this project was delayed and will now fall into the next financial year.
The school senior leadership team has asked the NPSA to contribute to a large project to improve the play equipment at school, as there is barely any in place at the moment, its all too old, broken, rotten and most has been removed over time.
We are aware we are holding on to too much cash at the moment, but we will be spending the committed £22,000 hopefully in the first term of next school year.
As usual we keep £16,000 in a savings account to cover approximately 2 years of our very basic commitments to school, and this summer we closed down our Santander account and whilst the money is currently in our lloyds current account, we are opening a savings account with Metro Bank. We chose Metro bank because they have a free community bank account, and the branch in Bath has a coin counting machine which would be hugely helpful after our big
summer/Christmas fairs which normally involve hours of manually counting coins.
We are still holding onto the National Lottery grant for £6,200 for an intergenerational wellbeing project. This has obviously had to be on hold since the pandemic, and mixing children with more vulnerable older people hasn’t been possible. We hope to be able to organize something next school year.
We were lucky enough to benefit from corporate donations totaling £2,959 and private donations totaling £3,308 during the year totaling. We raised £18,711 through events, and a total of £448 from Giving Machine & Amazon Smile, and £323 from Bag2School. Our total income for the year was £25,752.
Our regular annual commitments to the school totaled £9493 this year, which is higher than usual, but this is because some of this was carried over from last year.
These regular commitments are things like Forest School, trips for year groups, Doodle and Twinkl subscriptions, gifts for year 6 leavers, and batteries for the defibrillators.
We did manage to spend £1764 of the money earmarked for outdoor play equipment before the end of the school year, and along with that our other largest purchase was £1150 on world book day. We spend £839 on refreshing the pond in the forest school area. All of these will benefit all the children at school.
We decided this year to introduce a Family grant which will be cash that Mrs Kennaugh, the headteacher, to have as an emergency fund for families in need. The idea for this came from the Ukrainian refugees who arrived at our school with very little.
We had £255 left over from a Neighborhood Covid grant from the year before, which we gave Mrs Kennaugh in cash. Going forward we will give her £100 cash each term to keep this going.
The NPSA spent £169 on assets this year – two urns to help us with drinks at events. Along with that we renewed our Parentkind subscription for £128, and £45 on our ticketing website. Finally we bought a second iZettle machine to make card payments easier at our summer events.
As usual we paid an advance fee to secure a fireworks display for the following year and we have also bought 10 places at the 2023 Bath Half marathon.
