The Trustees present their report for the year ended 21 August 2022.

Structure, Governance and Management

Constitution

The Trust’s objects and rules are contained in its Trust Deed dated 17 August 1992. Its address is 33 Brandling Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 4RR.

Trustees

The Trustees during the year to 21 August 2022 were: Mr J P Macpherson Mrs S J M Macpherson Mrs G J Birbeck Miss E Ferguson Mrs K A Glenton Miss P L Macpherson Miss R C Walton The Trustees are appointed with the approval of at least three Trustees meeting together.

Objectives and Activities

The main purpose of Familia Trust is the relief of poverty, hardship, and the distress in the world and in particular India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, by giving grants to institutions in these countries.

During the year grants of £44,500 were made to Familia in India (www.familiaindia.org). Familia is a Voluntary Organisation registered in India.

Familia cares for homeless and abandoned children in a family environment; Runs a senior citizens home, looking after abandoned elderly people and runs an English medium school to provide better future prospects for the children at Familia and those in the surrounding areas. Familia also runs community projects to help relieve poverty in nearby villages.

Familia Trust Trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit, particularly Annex A of that document which describes the rules for charities, like Familia Trust, which are concerned with the relief of poverty.

Achievements and Performance

Familia looked after 45 children in five foster houses over the year. Each foster home is overseen by a guardian couple, enabling the children to grow up in a family environment. Familia also cared for 22 elderly people in a separate home with the help of two nurses.

Familia School had just over 800 students. It is very well regarded in the area. One pupil was rated 4th in the whole of India in the final year national Board Examinations.

6

Familia India continues to support the local community through various outreach programmes. During Covid outbreaks they helped to distribute masks and PPE as well as food and essentials. In summer 2022, they finalised plans for the construction of a health care centre for the impoverished community which will enable them to provide access to medical professionals focused on maternal and child health and hygiene. They plan to run a free monthly clinic, home visits and regular awareness classes. Those below the poverty line will be offered free or subsidized healthcare. The healthcare centre is scheduled to open in mid 2023.

2021-2022 was an exceptional year for Familia Trust’s income, thanks to two large donations from visitors to Familia in India and a generous bequest amounting to just over

£31,400.

Familia Trust’s principal source of funds is from donations. We do not invest any of our reserves but transfer them regularly to Familia in India. This year we received £7 in bank interest.

Financial Review

Familia Trust raised £71,894 this year and remitted £44,500 to Familia in India. There

was

a surplus for the year of £27,137 and details are given in the accounts.

Reserves policy

The general fund represents the unrestricted funds arising from past results and represents

the free reserves of the charity.

At the balance sheet date, Familia Trust holds £28,997 on the general fund. Familia Trust’s reserve policy is to hold cash to cover at least three months of operations. This amounts to £54 to cover the costs of our Justgiving.com subscription. In reality we transfer money to Familia in India when they require it, as we wish to limit the charges levied per transaction by UK and Indian banks.

Taxation

The Trust is recognised by the Inland Revenue and there is therefore no liability to taxation

on any of its income.
