The ASMCF was founded in 1979 to provide a forum for those involved in teaching and researching modern France and the Francophone world. From its creation it has been an interdisciplinary association and draws its members from a wide range of academic disciplines and departments in higher and further education in the UK and overseas.

The Association exists to promote, support and share new research into modern and contemporary France and the French-speaking world with an expert focus on post1789 politics, history, cinema and culture through our journal, by hosting events, and by offering financial support to our members.

Activities and achievements in 2024/2025

The following highly successful events took place over the course of the year:

The Association’s annual conference was hosted at the University of Southampton on 5-6 September 2024 on the theme of ‘Transnational Futures/ Avenirs Transnationaux ’, including the Peter Morris Memorial Lecture delivered by Prof. Charles Forsdick (Cambridge) and Dr Claire Launchbury (Oxford Brookes) on their edited volume Transnational French Studies (LUP 2023); and a keynote panel on Les publications de l’ethnologie au ministère de la Culture (Christian Hottin, Thomas Mouzard and Sylvie Sagnes, Ministère de la culture).
The 15[th] Annual Douglas Johnson Memorial Lecture on ‘Uncovering Josephine Baker’s War: A Historian’s Journey’, delivered by Professor Hanna Diamond (Cardiff University), was hosted at the Institut français, London on 13 January 2025, and sponsored jointly by the ASMCF and the Society for the Study of French History.
The annual Postgraduate Study Day, organised jointly with the Society for the Study of French History, was hosted on Saturday 1 March 2025 at the University of Cambridge on the theme of Ruptures(s) with keynote speaker Dr Fraser McQueen (Bristol) as well as a professional development panel with Dr David Lees (Warwick), Dr Emily Hooke and Dr Sara Mechkarini.
The ASMCF Initiative Fund supported the following events:
French Studies and the Medical Humanities: Critical Intersectionalities Workshop, Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS), 3-4 September 2024.
French vaudeville and its European transformations during the long nineteenth century, Newcastle University, 6-7 November 2024.
Women in French UK-Ireland conference on the theme of ‘Transformation’, Hinsley Hall, Leeds 30 May-1 June 2025

In the light of ongoing challenges facing Modern Languages in the UK, ASMCF continues to work with other subject associations towards joint initiatives including support for the development of French-related Schools’ Liaison and Outreach activities. The Association continues to run its funding schemes and other forms of support for members and the wider community as far as possible, while aiming to adapt its provision in response to the feedback and suggestions of members.

How we appoint our Trustees

The Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France is run by an Executive Committee. Positions on the Committee are advertised publicly and appointed to for threeyear terms. Appointments are confirmed by the members of the Association at our Annual General Meeting. Executive Committee members become trustees of the Charity for the duration of their term.

On completion of one or more terms, former Presidents of the Association are invited to retain their connection with the Association as Hon Vice Presidents and their role as trustees within the Charity.

Charity Name

Report to the trustees Charity Name ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY FRANCE On accounts for the year 31/07/2025 Charity no 1014382 ended (if any) Set out on pages 1-2 I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/07/2025. Responsibilities and As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the basis of report accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have examiner's statement come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
