The Society benefits from a great many
voluntary hours and unclaimed out of pocket
expenses contributed by supporters,
members, organisations and companies.
This voluntary time is provided to help with
charitable activities, with management and
administration and with fundraising activities
that also help to publicise the work of the
charity.
Para 1.38
Contribution made by
volunteers
It would be impracticable to try to pla￿ a
value on all these gifts in kind, without which
much of the Society's work could not be
carried out.

Achievements and Performance
SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity's work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
The year ended 30.09.24 proved to be a
challenging one for the Society. The
increase in requests to take in both cats and
dogs, more difficulty in finding new homes
and ever increasing costs have put great
pressure on the Society's operations. At the
time of writing, there is no sign that these
pressures are easing.
Para 1.20
We took in 289 cats and kittens (2023: 253)
a significant increase from the previous
year. The number of dogs taken in at 129
(2023.. 158) was down on the previous year
as it proved more difficult to find new homes
for the particular mix of dogs that came in.
The trustees consider this was a very good
result under all the circumstances and, as
always, it was only possible because of the
dedication of the staff & volunteers involved.
We have worked with the Brttish Hen
Welfare Trust since 2016, utilising the
facilities at The Ark to help rescue and re-
home commercial laying hens. We were
pleased to be able to carry on with this work,
although with some restrictions because of
continuing concerns about Avian Influenza
outbreaks.
The Society continues to neuter, microchip,
vaccinate
and provide
appropriate
veterinary attention for all animals in its care
before re-homing. In the opinion of the
trustees, the standing of the Society in the
local communit
continues to be ve
ood.

Financial Review
Review of the charity's
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21
The attached statements show the Society's
finances for the year ended 30 September
2024. Despite continuing increases in costs.
overall it proved to be a good year
financially, although below the record
outcome for the preceeding year..
Adoption income and legacies were both
below the record levels of the previous year
but still very good, while all other categories
of income also held up well. Overall, again
due mainly to legacies, total income was the
second highest ever achieved in the
Society's history.
On a less positive note, total expenditure
also rose to record levels. Virtually all
categories of costs increased, but the main
factors were wages, utilities and veterinary
costs. The trustees anticipate that this trend
will continue. All expenditure is carefully
controlled but the trustees, priority is to
provide the best possible standard of animal
care that the charity's financial resources
can support.
The charity operates certain trading
activities in a separate company and the
profits from these operations are donated
back to the Society, to be used to further its,
charitable ob'ectives. These activities

continued to make worthwhile contribution
to the Society's finances.
Looking ahead, the continuing rise in
operating costs has serious potential
implications, both for the overall animal
welfare environment and for the Society own
operations. The trustees believe that a
period of considerable uncertainty lies
ahead.
The trustees would like to thank a very
dedicated team of staff and loyal volunteers,
as well as all the Society's members and
supporters for their continuing generosity
Statement explaining the
policy for holding resenies
stating why they are held
Para 1.22
Unrestricted funds are needed to cover
expenditure in furtherance of the objects of
the Society and for administration, fund-
raising and support costs. Much of the
current level of total funds is tied up in
property and other fixed assets and the
trustees have designated certain funds for
anticipated capital expenditure, potential
maintenance works and for contingencies or
unforeseen events. Even taking this into
account, the Society's cash position at the
balance sheet date remained exceptionally
good, again due to the high level of legacy
income. However, the trustees are aware
that this is in the context of rising costs and
that Legacy income is unpredictable.
The Society continues to be very dependent
on volunteers for many of its, key activities.
The trustees are aware that there are likely
to be changes in the level of voluntary
management and fundraising activity that
can be undertaken in the coming years,
which may potentially adversely affect both
income and costs.
Net of designated funds, and On￿ the
Society has met its current commitments
and covered other planned outlays, the
trustees have historically considered it
prudent to have sufficient unallocated funds
available to cover between 12 and 24
months projected normal expenditure. With
increasing costs and an uncertain outlook,
the trustees continue to be cautious and the
funds now required to meet this objective
are significantly higher than ever before.
Amount of reserves held
Para 1.22
At the balance sheet date, 30 September
2024, the level of unallocated cash
reserves was above the target range.
However, in view of rising costs and the
uncertain outlook the trustees are satisfied

that this is reasonable and prudent in order
to help safeguard the charity's future.

Investment policy and
objectives including any
social investment policy
adopted
Para 1.46
With the historically high level of the
Society's total funds, the trustees have
carefully considered their investment policy.
Rising costs and the uncertain financial
outlook mean that it is prudent to retain
significant funds that can be readily
accessed. The trustees have concluded
that a prudent, low risk approach is
appropriate, prioritising protection of assets
over potential investment gain. Higher
interest rates make cash funds more
attractive than has been the case for some
years, so this will be the default position.
This policy will be regularly reviewed as the
Society's financial position changes.
The trustees have given consideration to the
major risks to which the Society may, in the
trustees, opinion, be exposed. They have
taken steps to mitigate those risks as far as
is reasonably possible. A prudent cash
reserves policy is an important element in
this, in view of the uncertain financial
outlook. The trustees are also conscious of
the need to plan for future continuity in the
management of the Society's affairs.
