Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Osprey
I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 30[th] June 2025, which are set out on pages 8 to 10.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008
have not been met; or
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Trustees' Report (Continued)
In August 2024 OSPREY reached its 33rd year of charitable fundraising in Hull and East Yorkshire. During the year we organised nine events, fewer in number than previous years, and not hosting any events for the first three months of 2025.
In July 2024 we arranged two events at Cerutti2 in Beverley, at which Tina Cerutti presented a highly entertaining, anecdotal record of her year as High Sheriff.
In September we heard a memorable but sad account from Malka Levine who spoke of the traumatic experiences of her family, hiding underground from the Nazis for almost 2 years.
We held two Fashion Show Days, at Wat’s On, the first in November 2024 and the second in May 2025. We hosted two Christmas Parties, at Cerutti2 in December 2024, one a luncheon and the second a dinner. In April 2025 we held our popular annual OSPREY quiz night at Cerutti2 with the quiz being set and presented by our wonderful Quizmaster Colin English. Thank you Colin.
Our final event of the year was held at The Triton when the Yorkshire Post columnist Sue Woodcock entertained us for 80 minutes without pausing for breath, an unforgettable experience!
Each of these events was, as usual, very well attended, The Cerutti2 and The Triton events always being a sell-out.
On Christmas Eve 2024 our much loved and respected treasurer Syd Howey died. Syd was a founder member of OSPREY, and his expertise and no-nonsense attitude is missed by us all.
At our last AGM we said ‘goodbye’ to our secretary Sheila English. Sheila joined OSPREY in 2003 after the death of her husband , John, who was also a trustee of the charity, and Sheila became secretary in 2005.
We thank Sheila for all she did for the charity, over her 22-year association. Sheila graciously accepted our invitation to become an Honorary Life Member of OSPREY, and we are delighted to continue welcoming her to events.
With two officers' positions to fill, David Haire, in the absence of any volunteers and his sanity, gallantly stepped in and is currently both secretary and treasurer. Thank you David.
On the retirement of our President Sue Steel, we welcome David Kilburn as our new President, and we look forward to a long and happy association with David. We also wish a happy ‘retirement' to Sue , who remains a trustee of the charity.
Our thanks to:
Vanessa Chetham who continues to source and donate beautiful prizes for our raffles. Debbie Sutton who retains the title of ‘ Star Ticket Seller’.
Tina Wood for being our ‘Official Photographer’ and ensuring the photos land on our website. Lyn Clarke for organising us all for the AGM.
Maxine Osgerby for keeping us up to date and in touch with the Centre’s activities.
Finally, a huge thank you to Paul Drant, who generously gives of his time and expertise to ensure we comply with the demands of The Charity Commission and that we submit accurate financial reports.
Thank you all.

It is the policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds, the free reserves of the charity, at a level which equates to approximately six months unrestricted expenditure.
The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 1993. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

In Memoriam
On Christmas Eve 2024, Syd Howey, a founding trustee of OSPREY, died. Syd held several roles within OSPREY and had been for the last 25 years, our Treasurer. Syd was a highly respected, brilliant nuclear physicist, working over 40 years for the NHS Trust in East Yorkshire. However, his skills and innovation had far reaching effects both nationally and internationally. He was married to Kath for 62 years and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a great friend to many. We have been privileged to have known Syd. He will be greatly missed by us all.
