## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Osprey**

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 30[th] June 2023, which are set out on pages 8 to 10.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;

- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008

have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **Trustees' Report (Continued)**

In August 2022 OSPREY reached 31 years of charitable fund-raising in Hull and East Yorkshire.

We organised eight events during the year and began our fund-raising events in August with ‘A Turkish Evening’ in Beverley and arranged by trustee Colin English. A fun night was had by all! This was followed by our regular Cerutti 2 Quiz night in October and once again was arranged by Colin English. Colin’s quiz nights always prove popular and we sold 56 tickets. Cerutti 2 has only 48 covers so it did prove challenging fitting in so many guests! These two events raised £1221. Thank you, Colin.

In October we also arranged a fashion event at Wat’s On Boutique, which raised £897. This was followed two weeks later by a Literary Lunch at the Triton Inn, with regular guest author Milly Johnson and arranged by trustee Debbie Sutton. The event raised £800. Thank you, Debbie.

In November 2022 we ran a ‘pop-up’ shop’, hosted by Wat’s On Boutique and staffed by ourselves and Wat’s On staff. The shop was open for 6 days trading and raised a magnificent £2,200 for OSPREY. Thank you to everyone involved in that event. In February Colin arranged a second quiznight at Cerutti 2, which raised £450. Thank you, Colin.

In March we held a third event at Wat’s On which raised £1031. The total raised at the three fashion events was £4138. We have to thank Joyce Clappison for her generosity in arranging these 3 events. Our final event of the year was our Coronation Party celebrating The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and which raised £2,800. Special thanks to Tina Wood for knitting our glorious ‘King dollies’ which were auctioned and raised over £250. Thank you for all of your efforts re these events.

Thanks to the trustees for their continued support. I am amazed that we as a team continue to raise significant amounts of money for OSPREY.

Finally, very special thanks from me to:

Syd Howey, OSPREY’s treasurer, who continues the seemingly impossible task of ‘balancing the books’, so magnificently and in spite of continued health issues.

Sheila English, our secretary, for continuing to expedite the minutes of our meetings, endlessly writing thank you letters, organising and seeking out new ideas for events.

Thank you to Debbie Sutton our star ticket seller and who quietly tolerates my regular rants! Thanks Debbie.

Thank you to Raena Landau, a ‘sub-committee of one’ who also in spite of poor health, continues to sell tickets for events and also to source excellent auction/raffle prizes when required.

Thank you for Vanessa Chetham who very generously continues to supply a huge number of raffle prizes for all of our events.

Final thanks to Paul Drant who generously gives his time and expertise to ensure we comply with the demands of The Charity Commission.

Thank you all, I am very grateful.

It is the policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds, the free reserves of the charity, at a level which equates to approximately six months unrestricted expenditure.

The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 1993. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the preventions and discretion of fraud and other irregularities.
