AGE CONCERN SYSTON CHAIRPERSONS REPORT 2023

Another eventful year has passed. Lots of things have happened, some faces are missing from our family but lots of new members have joined over the year.

As usual our office has been extremely busy sometimes ending up with staff working well over their contracted hours. Due to health and safety concerns and to ensure staff never work alone we decided to close the office on a Friday on a temporary basis.

Our daycare has struggled on over the last few months due to illness and retirement. We would like to welcome into our family Raj, who starts in December as our new Day care Leader. Many thanks to Beryl for the many years she has run Day Care and wish her well in her retirement.

The minibus has had a few problems lately regarding where it will be parked. We have secured a safe place on a long term basis parking in D R Electricals car park. Thank you to Peter Bates and all our volunteer drivers it is clean, tidy, roadworthy enabling it to be well used.

Our coffee mornings just seem to be getting more and more popular so coming up with new ideas for Wednesday entertainment is getting very difficult. If you have any ideas please let us know but thank you to our kitchen staff for their service to you all.

Our trips have been limited due to the office being so busy, we’ve not really had time to organize them and driver availability has also been a headache at times.

That’s enough from me but the biggest thank you to all our volunteers, we do all appreciate what you do for Age Concern Syston.

Age Concern Syston Minibus Report

We currently have a team of 6 regular drivers who provide their time and expertise on a voluntary basis to support all our members, we would like to thank them all for their continued support. Sadly for us Keith has decided to retire after many years driving for us, thank you and we wish you well in your leisure pursuits. If you know anyone who may be interested in giving some time to drive for us, even if it’s just once a month please give them our contact details.

The bus has just been taxed and MOT’d. With the support from Rob who has allowed us to park at the secure D R Electricals car park and the

continued support of our drivers we look forward to many interesting trips next year.

AGE CONCERN SYSTON MERTON GROUP REPORT 2023

Another year has flown by and the Merton Group are still going strong with a full bus (14 people) plus the driver who has taken us to some really nice places, pubs, tea rooms and garden center’s in and around Leicestershire. Keith is our regular driver who unfortunately for us is retiring at the end of this year. We will miss him, but wish him well for the future. We are all looking forward to next year with new and old places to visit.

Marlene Cross Merton Group Leader

AGE CONCERN SYSTON DAYCARE GROUPS 1 AND 2

This year has seen lots of change within our daycare groups, some sad but lots of good news too. We started the year with 2 groups who went out twice a month on outings mostly for pub lunches or to a garden Centre. Sadly for us after a spell in hospital Beryl our Day care Leader decided it was time to retire. Beryl, your humor and kindness will be greatly missed and I would like to say thank you on behalf of everyone at Age Concern Syston for your years of support and I’m sure that you will still continue to volunteer with us in the future. We would also like to thank Jane who volunteered with you for many years who has moved on to pastures new.

Sadly we said goodbye to several long standing members but we have also welcomed new people to the group. During the time it has taken to advertise and recruit a new Day Care Leader there have been several changes. After a bit of negotiation we have been able to hire the Meeting Place at the Hub for our Friday groups with lunch being cooked for us during term time by students from Leicester College. Having a base rather than eating out at pubs every time, makes it more cost effective for members and enables us to do activities with the group such as games, quizzes exercise etc which better fits the ‘ethos’ of the group. We will still do occasional trips out as everyone enjoys them. During this transition period we have joined both daycare 1 and daycare 2 into one group to make working hours more manageable. We do now have quite a few people on our waiting list so these people will become a new group in January. We have successfully appointed a new daycare leader who some of you will have now met as he has joined us at several coffee mornings and the Christmas Craft Fayre, welcome to Age Concern Syston Raj!

Yvonne Derry Daycare Leader

AGE CONCERN SYSTON YOUNG AT HEART GROUP

Young at Heart is a long running group in Syston providing a hot lunch and entertainment on a weekly basis at the community Centre. We have had links with the group for many years as they hire our minibus to transport some of their members to and from the group. This year Judy who has been running the group for many years on a voluntary basis wanted support with the admin side of things. As there was no one who wanted to do this on a voluntary basis and rather than have the group cease, Age Concern Syston put together a bid for some funding so that we can now provide the admin support to enable Judy and her volunteers to continue with all their good work and to take Young at Heart under the Age Concern umbrella.
