Volunteers 2024 Activities
The Management Committee normally meet on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm.
The Teesdale Day Club continue to have their lunch in the hall on Thursday’s. This is well supported and they have a very good group of volunteers to look after the members.
Here are a number of events we had though out the year:
The Peterborough Scout Group hired the hall for the weekend for an outreach camp event in January
The mice group put on a Curry and Quiz night in February and a Mad Hatters Tea Party in March which were very much enjoyed by all.
In April Mickleton Live brought us a Whitesnake tribute band who rocked the hall. We thought they were very good so we booked them to come back next year.
The Village Field next to the hall is the venue for the popular Summer Carnival held on the first Saturday in June. We had a loverly sunny day and the carnival was as usual well supported.
Once again, we had a 3day Folk Festival took place called the John Martyn Gathering. It looks this has become an annual event. The Folk Festival was well attended with campers camping on our adjoining field. The good weather made for the whole event a great success. A Big thank you to the team of volunteers, Mice for looking after the John Martyn Gathering with their amazing food.
We hosted a Battle of Britain Event with the 2505 Royal Air Force Air Cadets. They enjoyed the camp and said they would be back.
Mice put on another event with a Pasta and Puzzle night.
Mickleton Live brought Albert Lee back to the Hall in October. This was possibly for the last time.
The annual Christmas Carol service by Barnard Castle Brass Band was well supported. This event is to support Laithkirk Church.
Then our final event for the year was a Christmas Festival where we had Xmas tree decorations and Santa came for the children.
Perform Mickleton had a number of shows though out the year finishing with a Magic Show
To finish off the year, Mice put on a New Years Eve Party.
I would like to thank the many volunteers who create a wide variety of well-attended community cultural events. These attract all age ranges and are a vital source of funds for the Village Hall.
We have continued with the Online Booking Calendar, this has proved to be very successful as anyone can go online and see which dates are available to be booked, this is controlled by our Booking Clerk Jane Roberts then Sandra Moorhouse.

The solar panels, installed in August 2011 raised £1,708.09 in 2023 It was decided to update the solar panels with the purchase of replacement panels and a new inverter. In 2024 we got in total of £2,738.66, that is over a £1,000.00 improvement in their output, so it was well worth the extra investment. On top of that we sold some of the old kit for £560.00 these funds go towards the hall’s running costs and maintenance.
We carried out monthly checks on the safety systems. All the results are recorded. Any problems found are sorted ASAP.

Management Trustees Responsibility for the Financial Statements
Charity Commission rules require the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the financial activities of the Association during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:
-
i. Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
-
ii. Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
iii. State whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practices have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in financial statements.
-
iv. Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Association will continue to operate.
The Trustees are also responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Association and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 1993. They are responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Association and hence for taking steps for preventing and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

MICKLETON VILLAGE HALL ASSOCIATION TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31[st] 2024
SUMMARY OF THE ACCOUNTS
Village Hall volunteers have had a very busy year organising events that helped raise funds, so that in the 12 months up to 31st December 2024 the accounts had moved from a loss of £1,171.89 in the previous year, to a gain of £2,099.57. This was achieved despite some large capital investments (hand rail £2,219.47; new cabinets for the planned kitchen refurbishment £4,263.85; kitchen sink and taps £318.85; a new cover for the defibrillator £594.00). Additionally, Mickleton Live purchased a new digital sound desk at a cost of over £2,500.00. To maintain our reputation as a great venue for music performances, this was a much-needed purchase both for local hall users and for visiting artists.
A: Generating income: key points
-
The monies generated by the bar were significantly less in 2024 at £2,747.77 compared to £9,193.20 in 2023.
-
Hall Hire was up from £5,008.00 in 2023 to £6,119.37.
-
As in 2023 we received a £500.00 grant from the Parish Council.
-
Donations were much increased from £105.00 in 2023 to £2,731.68. Some of this money was generated by having a visible donation box out at all family events which are free of charge. A significant £1,500.00 was provided by the Moss group towards the cost of installing a hand rail on the external steps at the back of the hall.
-
Our new solar panels allowed us to sell much more electricity to the grid. We ‘earned’ £3,298.66 compared to £1,708.99 in 2023.
-
There was some increased revenue from bank interest from £475.60 in 2023 to £791.35 in 2024.
-
Similarly, Section Subs saw an increase from £991.75 in 2023 to £1,137.25 in 2024. If the increase is adults only, then the Hall had an increased footfall of 291 people. This is a reflection of more people attending our fund-raising events
B: Costs and expenditure: key points
-
Our insurance increased by £41.00.
-
As prices continued to rise our heating, electricity and water costs increased by £422.66.
-
Our repairs and maintenance costs increased by £5,371.00. These are explained by the capital investments outlined above designed to improve the fabric of the building.
-
Caretaking and cleaning costs were down by £470.00.
-
The costs of licenses was much increased by £767.66. Much of this was a due to the way the PPL/PRS license was calculated. Please note that this was contested by the treasurer in 2024 and again in 2025 and we were ablest negotiate a refund on these costs in 2025.
-
With a new internet provider, internet costs were down by £163.25

SECTION REPORTS
The Village Halls Consortium
The Directors of The Village Halls Consortium are grateful to Mickleton VH for allowing the Consortium to continue using the upstairs space for meetings and office equipment. In 2024 we had 3 meetings in the office, the Hall committee did not charge any hire costs. The Hall Committee’s generosity and understanding is much appreciated.
Sophie Stanwix, Secretary for TVHC
Cinema Club
In 2024 we continued with our 2 Films per month on the First and Third Friday of the month at 7pm A regular brochure is sent to members listing films we intend showing in the four months ahead, this also includes a list of other future events planned in the hall. We had a total of 620 members watch films compared with 516 in 2023. We continue to produce the Cinema Newsletter which also promotes other events in the hall, this is now mostly “Whats App” Thank you to Terry Wilson who has produced the Newsletter and the ‘What’s On’ on screen before our main attraction.
The cinema facilities are also available for use at meetings and private parties. David Hutchinson
Mickleton LIVE (R’n’B) Club
We had 2 events in 2024, The Ultimate Whitesnake Band in April and ‘Albert Lee’ in October. This was probably the last time we will get Albert Lee. It was so nice to see the band. Both events were well supported.
It was great to use our New Sound Desk, and we sold the old one for £550.00 which now gives us more space in the gig cupboard.
The club attracts high quality national and international groups who regularly return to perform at Mickleton Village Hall.
Details of future gigs can be found on our website @ www.mickletonlive.uk. We have also set up online payment for tickets sales through PayPal.
Steve & Sue Brown & David Hutchinson
The Little Choir
The choir maintained a core of ten regular members with one singer leaving the area and another moving in. The weekly sessions were spent rehearsing and adding new songs to our repertoire. We invested in new sheet music and mp3 teacher tracks and bought uniform claret coloured tops to wear at performances. During the year we fielded a team, including friends and family, in the MiCE 's excellent curry and quiz night and also ran the sweetie tombola at the village carnival in June. Members decorated trees for the Christmas tree festival in December then later enjoyed our 'bring a plate' Christmas buffet among the beautiful display. In October we took part in the Harvest Festival service at St James the Less in Forest. We then began rehearsing Christmas carols, including an arrangement of The Calypso Carol written especially for us in preparation for a busy season ahead. Sadly, it was not to be! We performed at the Eggleston Lights switch on but then the winter blizzards forced the cancellation of our other engagements: A cancer fundraising coffee morning in Cotherstone and the railway Christmas Fair at Kirkby Stephen but we did manage to end the year on a cheery note at Forest Christmas Eve carols.

MICKLETON VILLAGE HALL ASSOCIATION TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31[st] 2024 Mickleton Carnival - 2024 Report
We planned for a dry day, and we wasn't disappointed. The sun came out and so did the families. This year we had more children attending with their parents, this gave the event a Family Day Out feel, many took advantage of the sun and settled on the Village Hall Field with their drinks and food, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the entertainment. The Craft Stalls gave the parents an opportunity to browse whilst the children played on the more traditional Carnival Games. Our local MiCE group provided a stall in the Marquee, and sold Cakes & Bakes to boost their section balance.
The day began with a well-attended Children's Super Hero" themed Fancy Dress. Those who took part was rewarded with a Prize and a Medal. This attracted the local media and we had a full page spread in the Teesdale Mercury.
Marko's Circus Skills kept the Children entertained, with the added bonus this year the Large Bubbles. The parents sat on the field, relaxed with their refreshments, listening to the Barnard Castle Brass Band echoing across the field.
This year the added attraction of the Giant Bouncy Castle was at magnet for the children, along with the more traditional games…Sweet Tombola, Hook-a-Duck, Skittles, Coconut Sky, Crazy Golf and Hoopla all keeping the children amused.
Once again Local Business gave their support to our Carnival Raffle & Tombola. Many thanks go out to The Blacksmiths Arms - Mickleton, Middleton Forge, Middleton Fish & Chips, Mickleton Service Station, Beamish Museum, The Teespot Café, The Teesdale Hotel, The Rose & Crown in Romaldkirk, Grassholme Observatory and to the many residents of Mickleton whose kind and Generous donations were gratefully received
To Conclude this report... Big Thanks to all the volunteers who supported the Carnival and gave their time freely to bring the communitv together.

Mickleton Community Events (MiCE) - 2024 Report
2024 was a very busy year for the MiCE section. The group has continued to grow (now has over 20 members) and our events have become more frequent, popular, challenging and appreciated by the village community. Our volunteers have developed a wide range of skills, confidence and enthusiasm in the process and always show great team work and support for each other. A lot of work goes into the planning and preparation of events and our reward is to know how much our community benefits from our efforts.
17th February, our first event was a Curry and Quiz night and this fund raiser was very well attended. Terry's 'big screen' quizzes appeal to all participants and provide a lot of fun – a good value evening for the local community.
On 30th March we held our Easter extravaganza - themed around a Mad Hatter's Tea Party . The hall was creatively decorated and some marvellous hats were entered into the competition.
The children enjoyed a wide range of craft activities and the refreshments were of a very high standard.
A lot of our members were involved in the preparations for, setting up and running of, our annual Carnival on 1st June. We manned a MiCE table in the marquee to sell our home baking and crafts. The weather was kind and a good day was had by all.
Evening of 6th June - and we were up Bail Hill for the lighting of the beacon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D Day. The Parish Council had asked us to provide nibbles and drinks for the sizeable crowd. Our beacon must be the best in the area and, when lit, is a real spectacle to behold.

MICKLETON VILLAGE HALL ASSOCIATION TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31[st] 2024
14th - 17th June - our biggest event of the year! - the John Martyn Summer Gathering, when around 60 people arrived to enjoy 3 days of folk music, many camping in the field for the duration. The second time we have hosted this group, we had agreed to provide breakfasts and evening meals for the musicians and participants, a new venture for us, testing at times but well worth the effort.
On 30th August we enjoyed 2 challenging events on the same day. Firstly we produced a buffet to celebrate the marriage of two of our members, Chris and Kay, and then returned to the hall to set out another sumptious spread for Teresa's birthday party. Our catering skills were much appreciated.
5th October and into autumn, our next challenge was to hold a Pasta and Puzzle night to raise funds for the community Christmas event. We produced a selection of Italian dishes and offered tiramisu and Cornettos for dessert! Quite a contrast to curry night, but just as enjoyable.
1st November saw us, once again, setting up our Remembrance Day poppies and soldier silhouettes in the small garden near the bus shelter. We add to this display every year and the dramatic lighting certainly adds to its poignancy and impact.
Christmas activities started on 8th December with the decoration of some of the indoor trees for the brass band concert in the hall. We set up a stall to sell our craft items – bunting, bags, cards, stockings etc – all ideal Christmas presents. A week later Santa rode around Mickleton and arrived at the hall just in time for the switching on of the outdoor tree lights (MiCE bought 10 strings of white lights to enhance the display). Families then watched the film “It's a Wonderful Life” and helped decorate the rest of the trees, adding to the festive atmosphere. On 21st December we held the Christmas Tree Festival , a magical setting for villagers to enjoy our impressive selection of soup, sandwiches and cakes. Santa delighted the children by handing out stockings filled with goodies while they were busy at the craft table. The MiCE version of the “Twelve Days of Christmas” was something to behold, and never to be repeated!!!
We ended the year by rewarding ourselves with a New Year's Eve party – a big thank you to all our MiCE volunteers, their families and friends. We kept work to a minimum by bringing our own buffet and spent the evening enjoying music, a quiz, party games and sword dancing.

Our 2024 season began with the return of The Castle Players in These Things Do Happen.
In October, we hosted local artist Claire Priestley for a wet felting workshop. Several beautiful felted landscapes were produced and everybody had a lovely day.
We finished the year by welcoming Emmerson and Ward Productions with their show Love It If We Beat Them .
We have more great shows and workshops coming up; you can find more information about these by emailing MickletonVH@gmail.com and requesting that you be added to the mailing list. Follow us on Twitter @MickletonVH , on Instagram mickletonvillagehall , on
